We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Do not discuss any details of the game outside those threads while it is in progress.

Please write here or send me a Private Message for any technical queries, eg. if you have trouble opening the game. Do NOT post in this thread once you have successfully opened the starting save.

When I look at that starting position, my first thought is "what's the catch?" No metals? Even so, on Warlord, we should be able to take some from some baby nearby... ;)

Small Islands, maybe settling in place will severely restrict our ability to settle more cities on our starting island.

Settling 1S might allow us to create a bridge city between two water areas without losing any of the resources in sight. I would imagine that sea travel will play an important role in this kind of map, even in view of the size.

Luckily there is no special World Cup victory condition here. I'm tempted to go for a Diplo victory to atone for some of the celebratory excesses of my fellow Spaniards, but at this difficulty level it will be difficult to resist the call of the conquistador coming from within. :D

Jesusin, thanks for throwing 'random personalities' in, I really love this kind of quirky twist.

Good luck to everybody!

And, 1S gives more hammers in the capitol.

What exactly is random personalities? Whatever it is, does it make any difference on Warlord? ;)

"Random personalities" means that the AI will not necessarily act as that AI normally does. You might have Monty acting like friendly, easy to get-on-with Hatty, or Hatty acting like Monty is lurking just behind that Egyptian nose...

You might have Monty acting like friendly

A friendly Monty freaks you out. You spend the whole game thinking he is going to declare war on you despite his friendliness. But worse are the leaders it is normally easy to get along with behaving like spoilt children.

For those players like myself who do not know the leader traits by heart and are too lazy to check when they meet a new leader, this is a good skill equaliser.

In any case, remember: it is all in your head... :crazyeye:

Hmm, I kinda knew a Spanish XOTM would be up soon, after the WCup.

@Shyuhe, we can pop settlers and workers @5% odds each. About the tight map, too bad for the poor AI's. :mischief:

This game will have to wait in line, though. I'm behind schedule and have a GOTM to finish, and a WOTM and a BOTM still waiting to be played.

Thanks Conquistador. Guess it's warlords for me then, not that I expect to pop a settler

Also, since nobody has mentioned it so far, we're playing Spain on a lake!

Leader: Isabel
Is "Isabel" her real name, as opposed to the "Isabella" name that shows up in the English version of the game?

Actually, I wonder if that's even her birth name... the name sounds like "is a beauty," which is the kind of name that you might have been given (or just self-adopted) later on in life...

Unique unit: Conquistador(replaces Knight)
For all of you lamenting things missing from BTS, such as Moai Statues, here's a great gift: a Unique Unit that comes earlier in the game when we are playing on a low-level difficulty level! No need to tech all the way up to Military Tradition and Gunpowder just to dominate the world!

Of course, there are those of you who might say "no need to tech past Bronze Working and Sailing to dominate the world," but for the rest of us, it'll be nice to see the Conquistadors in action. :goodjob:

Her proper full name was Isabel la Católica (now you are sorry you asked, but no need to beeline Theology just to stick with it ;)). It is a very common name in Spanish-speaking countries and, although I can see what you mean (bela, bella, belle...), apparently it is quite ancient and probably comes from hebrew (Wikipedia dixit).

Good plan. I was thinking about aiming for a peaceful condition to begin with and, if all goes pear-shaped, unleashing those conquistadores when I get to them. But you just made me realise we only need to get to Guilds for that (and find some iron and horses, which might be tricky in a small map). :satan:

the name sounds like "is a beauty"
Yeah, in God's own language - English.
Not sure, but might stem from Jezebel - check Bible, Old Testament, Book of Kings (Elijah).

History is often shaped less by the truth and more by the biases and mindsets of those interpreting it.

Hence, that is why I would rather ask questions of knowledgeable people than trust my own biased interpretation.

Thanks for the answers! :)

I can assure you with very great authority that even knowledgeable people have biases. In fact some of the most knowledgeable people I have come across have the strongest biases.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabel makes a number of suggestions about the etymology of the name.

For those like me who like playing sciency games, it's an excellent GP farm site (not only has tons of food but also a few hills to build great library and national epic with), but with hardly any cottageable tiles will make a rubbish capital. So the catch is that you'd want to settle there for your 2nd city not your first one.

Settling PH to the north I think and building WB. Maybe researching Hunting and building a couple of Scouts as soon as the WB is finished to try popping some huts? Or is the AI's too close for that to succeed? Maybe even try to get a scout finished before the WB?
