If you tell a unit to "go" a long distance the computer may work out a path for him that trespasses on city state's land.

In my case I had a warrior that was 22 tiles from my home city, so I instructed him to go back, and about 10 turns later I got angry warnings from a city state about sending my forces through their territory.

Surely the auto path finder should avoid causing diplomatic incidents?

Yes, the path-finder is buggy and is not attempting to avoid crossing city-state lands.

Picture a unit that is going to go 2 tiles away in a horizontal direction. So the first step is going to be either left or right before veering back to the tile that is 2 away horizontally. If the left tile is covered by a city state border, then the unit should always prefer to move through the right-hand tile on the way to the destination. Instead, it often chooses to route your unit through city state lands.

(Not sure whether it counts as trespass if you are friendly or allied with the city-state.)

This should be an option, IMO. Most of the time, the path through the city-state's territory is the fastest way to go and, due to the rapid decay back toward "neutral" you get, makes little difference that you trespassed for a turn or so.

But, I agree. If that city-state's attitude toward you is tantamount in your current strategy, there should be an option "units do not end turn in neutral city-state territory"

I don't mind it not avoiding neutral city states because they go back to zero anyway, I only get annoyed when they don't avoid "Friendly" city states because that reduces the time I have with them as being friendly and loose the benifit sooner. So maybe it should avoid friendly city states at all costs, but only avoid neutral city stats if it doesn't take too long.

As far as I know, Friendly city-states don't care at all if you're in their territory. It's only when they're neutral that the influence decays. At least I go in my friendly (not allied) city states' territory all the time and I get no notification nor does the influence bar decay any faster.
