The Nobles' Club series started out as a way for Noble-level (and below) players to improve their game. Most of the original participants now play at much higher levels, so this has become a way for advanced players to help others learn to play better. You can play your own game at any level and with any mod, but it would be nice to comment on the games of other players and give them advice.

Our next leader is Ramesses II of Egypt, whom we last played in NC II. The Egyptians start with The Wheel and Agriculture.
  • Traits: IND suggests wonder spamming; you might want to consult the guide in my signature for which ones to pursue based on what goals you have in the game. SPI suggests a diplomatic game ('cause switching civics to please opponents is easy and doesn't disrupt you for too long before you can switch back to what you really wanted in the first place).
  • The UB: The Obelisk, a Monument that can turn two citizens into Priest specialists; this can give an early :hammers: boost and bring in a Great Prophet early, should you want to pursue a religion and build shrines (or bulb Theology, which through Theocracy can give your early armies a nice boost).

  • The UU: The War Chariot, a Chariot with 5 :strength: instead of 4 and immune to first strikes; it can be very good in an early rush.
And the start:

Spoiler map details :
Big and Small, standard options.
Spoiler edits :
Generated about a half-dozen maps and picked the one I liked best; ensured horses are reasonably close for our UU. Made sure the AIs each had some form of early strategic resource reasonably nearby and that nobody had huge amounts of territory into which to expand unopposed.
Finally, a cut and paste of our standard doctrine:

There are no hard and fast rules here: fun and learning are our primary goals, but we do request that you update your progress at various points in the game, using the Spoiler feature of the boards.

Tentative posting updates are suggested at:

4000 BC (starting thoughts, no spoiler required for that discussion)
1000 BC or so (how you decided to progress up the early tech/build paths, which AIs you have met, where you're thinking of putting cities, etc)
500 AD or so (after establishing some cities and a possible plan of action)
1200 AD or so (mid-game, Lib race, wars or peace, or whichever happened or didn't, met other continent if applicable, etc)
1600 AD (or when you have decided on a course of action and a specific victory condition)
End of game (Victory!!! or defeat, no shame in losing, especially if you tried a higher level. Learning is what we focus on, not fastest win or biggest empire)

Remember, these are only guidelines. What we really want are your thoughts as the game goes on, so if your strategies don't fall into line with those dates, feel free to adjust your reports accordingly.

We also welcome players to ask for specific game advice, as we have a number or stronger players who lurk and help out with solid tips, and of course, we help each other. Replies to specific questions should also be in spoilers, with a simple "@" in front of the person the answer is directed towards.

Special Thanks go to Bleys and TMIT, who really made this series a great one, r_rolo1, mapmaker extraordinaire, for his maps for most of the series, and all of you for playing.

The WB-saves are attached (zipped; they are bigger than standard saves). To play, simply download and unzip it into your BTS/Saves/WorldBuilder folder. Start the game, and load your favorite MOD (if you use one, if not, check out the BUG MOD), select "Play Scenario", and look for "NC 60 Ramesses Noble" (or Monarch, if you want the AI to start with its usual Archery bonus tech, or Immortal for Archery+Hunting, or Deity to add Agriculture). This allows you to play with your favorite MOD at the Level and Speed of your choice. From Quick-Warlord to Marathon-Deity, all are welcome! We stuck with the name "Nobles Club" because it has a cool ring to it.

Note for those who hate goody huts: open the WB save file with a text editor and delete all lines that say
ImprovementType=IMPROVEMENT_GOODY_HUT

Cool, I haven't played Ramesses for a while and a WC rush is always fun. Having Marble so close is also awesome for either wonder-spamming or fail gold strategies. SIP allows for a serious GP farm down the road, so I'll probably do that and build a worker first, then a couple of warriors for scouts. Techs priority is Mining, Masonry, AH, Myst, and Fishing (not in that order).

I'm giving this one a go on um i think its emperor, hopefully i'll get somewhere with it but its got a lot of the AIs I have an irrational dislike for in it. I had same tech priorities and settling idea as drlake, its difficult to choose what strategy to go for

I'm going to play on Emperor/Epic as usual. If I can pull it off, I'm going to try to rush two AIs with WCs. I should get time to play it by Sunday, so wish me luck!

Immortal/Normal 1520 BC
Spoiler :

I settled 1S after moving the warrior to the coast. It blocks off a fish, but you can see coastal west so theres an island that can grab the fish. Reason for moving is the extra hill and its unforested so we don't need BW early.

I went AH then mysticism in order to get Stonehenge. Then 3 chariots one to each AI. I ended up declaring on all 3 and taking 2 workers from Ghandi. Grabbed polytheism and priesthood next after mining in order to get the oracle. I will take aesthetics from the oracle I believe in order to get to literature and the great library for the 8 GPP as soon as possible. I'm roading to ghandi, after the oracle I'll build enough chariots to take him out so I can pick up stone. His capital has the plains cow glitch and is useless, but I want the stone...

Monarch, normal speed, 4000-800BC

Variant! --> MUST BUILD ALL LAND WONDERS, preferably in OCC style.

(might expand to 3 cities, not sure yet). If I fail such a wonder, I instantly lose.

I decided on this after

Spoiler :

moving the warrior and seeing this:

So yes, I settled one off the coast, forgoing the clams and coastal acces. I thought about turning the grassland south of the marble/corn to coast for coastal access, but decided to keep it as is. (hence the "land" wonders rule)

As I get 2 build only 2 national wonders (oxford for sure, the other one I'm not sure yet. IW is a big health impact, another reason to expand to 3 or so cities)

We'll decide as we go along!

I started with MINING-MYSTICISM-MASONRY to get the earliest wonders SH and GW asap. Luckily we start with Agriculture for the corn, and the wheel to connect the marble.

I pop AH from this hut:

Spoiler :

And a kind of useful map for once!

Spoiler :

Mysticism and the worker complete simultaneously, next build is SH while researching BW

Spoiler :

Worker Improvement sequence:

Spoiler :

And the first wonder is in!

Spoiler :

Masonry has two turns left, which allows for squeezing in a happy warrior before GW

Spoiler :

I go Poly next, I guess I'll have to build the temple of artemis before the pyramids, the AI just loves that wonder.

Spoiler :

The great wall:
Spoiler :

Overflow-whip a second worker (not really sure if a second worker was a good move, but at least it allows for better emergency chopping and such

Spoiler :

And the 3rd wonder!

Spoiler :

The first GP is born, luckily a prophet instead of a spy. the GPT will come in handy to buy health/wonder resources later on. And the mini-engeneer production isn't bad either in this stage!

Spoiler :

The 4th wonder!

Spoiler :

Spoiler :

Which gives me metal casting for the forge. Unfortunately no forge-happy resource, happy is really crippling, I have just the base 5 for the capital. Although I won't build the national park, I intend on keeping those 6 forests for 3 health, if possible.

The second GP
Spoiler :

Which I'm not so happy with. But hey, with this challenge we won't keep a pure gene-pool for our GP's.

And our last wonder for the session:

Spoiler :

Instantly doubling our science output, and giving us 3 more happy!

Plans for the next session:
SlowBuild a library, running scientists while researching Aesthetics and building the Hanging Gardens, hope for a GS for an academy.

Monarch/epic, through 820AD:

Spoiler :

Settled 1S seemed obvious to get another grass hill. Popping horses there was a big bonus, decided on a WC rush against Ghandi. In 2100BC I had his 2 cities. Built henge and ToA in Thebes, mids and GW in Delhi. Prioritized IW to grab the rich jungle land SE of Thebes, and moved the capital to Memphis (gems/copper) for a super bureau capital. First gp was a GS, made academy in Thebes. 2nd gp was a GSpy used to infiltrate Darius (stole MC and monarchy so far, feudalism next). Third gp was a GP, built hindu shrine in Delhi. Huge tech lead and a ton of land blocked off.

First time back on civ in ~6 months, so i decided to look up the current NC and give it a shot on monarch/epic.

Spoiler :

SIP; worker first; prioritize AH, fish, and BW; I decided to slow play it and forgo the WC rush when I saw a fair amount of land between myself and ghandi. I figured I'ld let him improve it and take it later. Beelined the GLH after basic worker techs successfully, allowing easy coastal settlement. Also picked up a late ToA around 300 BC and the GL in my capital. Due to my settling of coasts ghandi expanded quite a bit and most of the land has been settled on the continent.

Darius is friendly due to religion, so I've been tech trading mostly with him and whoever else is willing. With all rush potential gone due to the wonders I picked up, I decided to go for an engineering beeline and use xbows, pikes, longbows, and trebs for my initial assault on ghandi, with a follow up of knights when I get to them. I have a decent tech lead so the war should go well as long as I can get enough production going (cheap forges should help with that)

This one's playing much differently than former games, at least in terms of tech path. I think this is the earliest I've ever teched engineering at around 800AD.(except maybe a game with izzy) I have had a number of miscues mostly from not taking the initiative (missed capturing a couple of easy barb cities) but overall Im in a good spot assuming ghandi doesn't suddenly race ahead in tech.

sorry no pics yet...i forgot to take them. I'll try to remember for my next post

Red added by me for emphasis. This statement doesn't make any sense.

Assuming you didn't check 'OCC' in the game setup, you would need more than 3 universities to build Oxford.

If you did check 'OCC' in the game setup, you could build 5 national wonders.

Perhaps you meant national epic instead of oxford.

 You're right!

Unfortunately, I never got to find out myself:

Spoiler :

800 AD-finish 1847

Spoiler :

The first war with ghandi went well. I split him down the middle taking four cities before stopping to regroup. Unfortunately he peace vassaled to darius immediately so I sent my refreshed stack against sury and his colony (brennus). Same strategy of cutting down the middle worked great and he capped after 3 cities including his capital. Wang soon there after passaled to me. I think he might have been shooting for a culture VC, but he never got close.

I primarily teched military techs throughout and backtraded for the econ ones. Was the first to rifles and cavalry, which allowed me to renew my attack on ghandi, who after breaking free from darius immediately signed a defensive pack that i didn't notice. It ended up not mattering and I finished him off before setting my sights on the last serious AI threat.

Unfortunately darius was quite the pushover, never getting rifles and trying to stop my cav/rifles/cannon with grens. I had infantry by the time he capped although I was still 10% under the domination requirement. Seeing as naval invasion would be required for the VC, I decided to set up a TKO against the remaining AIs.

Dominating the last two civs with tanks/infantry/arty, when they didn't even have rifling was easy and it was simple to mass cap them 5 turns into the war resulting in my second highest score of ~113000

It was an interesting game...I certainly waited longer than normal to go to war(~1000 AD) and I had to use some efficient siege warfare with a tech disadvantage against ghandi to catapult back into the tech race. I also saw alot of settled great people (alot of prophets) in the BCs which helped keep my tech rate up and only saw one or two GS another unusual incident especially since I wasn't really focusing on religion at all. I may have to go back and play some of the NC games that i missed now.

I gave it it a try, it's quite a long time I haven't played with Egyptians, and a bit rusty
at playing Civ.
I've play at Noble / marathon.

4000BC - 1000BC
Spoiler :

For now, I've played up to 600ish AD, I'll post only up to 1AD (being at work, I don't have all my notes :))

I've settle at 1S, then tech AH - mining - mysticism - meditation - Priesthood - masonry and fishing.

With 3 chariots, I took out Gandhi, who managed to get Hinduism and Judaism in Dehli, and complete Stonendge before I capture his town.
After resting, I went after Darius, and destroyed Persians in 2210BC, while keeping Persepolis (it has Buddism). I did hesitate for a couple of turn at destroying Sury, he could be such a pain. the adage says "Better safe than Sorry", so, here I come Surry.

In the meantime, I tech to Potery, Polytheism and Sailing
Surry is destroyed in 1930 BC, he has 2 towns that I will raze.
I made contact with Gilgamesh in 1900BC.
I delayed the oracle for a couple of turns, to be able to get Aesthetics as a free tech.
I'll discover CoL in 1290, I have now the 4 basics religions.
After CoL, I went to Alphabet at a 70% research rate, at -12 per turn, I was loosing my treasury :)

On the Wonder side:
The Great Wall (forgot the date), Oracle (1650BC), Parthenon (1060BC), Temple of Arthemis (1190BC).
Stonendge missed to Gandhi.

I forgot to choose a religion :crazyeye: i selected Confusianism in 1030 BC, since Gilgamesh was on that religion.

1000 BC - status:
4 towns
4 wonders achieved, 1 in construction (Statue of Zeus)
3 civilizations destroyed.
My military force is inexistant (1 warrior per town, 3 chariots),
In the great wall, we trust :)
No BW nor Archery.

I have 1 screenshot of my "empire" in 1000BC, but I don't know how to add them on the post. I'll try to figure that later :) (Went to the FAQ, and found the way :) )
Civ4ScreenShot0130.JPG

1000BC - 1 AD
Spoiler :

950BC, my first GP, a prophet. I will settle him in Memphis, for the Confusianism's shrine.

I'm wondering about trying a cultural victory. I tried only twice to acheive it in the last couple of years. I'm pretty sure I will fail on that one, but it seems to me that it's a good map to try it.
I finished alphabet in 800BC, traded immediatly with Koreans:
Polytheism for BW, Meditation for Archery. a few turns later, Iron Working for Aesthetics.

Tech slider raised at 80% in 570BC, the tech tree was Monotheism - Monarchy - Mathematics.
Revolt in Hereditary Rules in 420BC, when Monarchy is discovered.
290BC, new GP, a merchant, bubble to Currency.

Wonders:
Statue of Zeus, done in 700BC in Memphis.
Lighthouse lost to s/o in 360BC.
Pyramids in 210BC
Chichen Itz in 110BC
Shwedagon Paya in 80BC.

Tech tree after Mathematics: Litterature, Drama the Music.

Around 100-1AD, I start building Archer to protect my towns and increase my power rate. Wang Kon et Gilgamesh start pestering me about my treaties with each other, and even Wang made some "arrogants" demands.

1 AD - Status:
4 towns.
I will probably head to a cultural victory.
I'm ahead in technology by 5 to 6 techs for each civis (forgot to note and mention
when Germans made contact with me)
I've built almost all wonders available to me.
Thebe is a 4k culture
2 others at 2.5k.
Drama is due to pop in 3 turns.

1AD - 500AD - advice needed.
Spoiler :

Betweem 1AD and 500AD, I added a few new cities, droped my research to 40%.
I, then, realised that I've made a mistake that could be an issue.
Thebes is a 4k, Memphis (confusianism shrine) and Persepolis (boudist shrine 200 or 300AD) are at 2.4k, and Delhi at 2.3k (judaism and hinduism holy city, no shrine, + one wonder.)
Sadly, I've made Statue of Zeus in Memphis, which produce 20 cultures / turn, instead of building it in Delhi, I have now 4 towns competing for producing culture instead of 3.
I may have to let one go, and focus on dehli since it have 2 religions.

What should i do ? focus on Delhi with its two potential shrine ? or continue to build in Memphis. I realised that I've no detailed screenshots of both towns.

When going for a cultural victory always pick three cities to prioritize, misplacing a wonder isn't going to make or break a cultural VC. Not being able to see any screens I can't recommend which three to pick but if your diplo situation is good enough to go for an early culture win I'ld take a good look at how much commerce each city is producing as well as their base culture.

Going for culture is generally good when you can manage the diplo to prevent any AIs from DoWing, which spiritual can be very helpful with. Be sure to capitalize on all the religions you have by building enough cheap temples to pump in 2 or 3 cathedrals in each culture city and really focus on getting great artists to save for culture bombs in the second and third cities. Check out the war academy/peacmongering section for some helpful guides on pursuing culture. You might also take a look here at a game TMIT played for culture with only 3 cities. Just looking at how he set up the cities gave me a new angle to approach culture VCs.

Monarch/epic 1695AD domination:

Spoiler :

Pretty simple, really. Take MilTrad from lib, tech to economics for the GM, then rifling. Upgrade a ton of cuirassiers to cavalry, conquer the world. I never saw anything more advanced than muskets. Order of conquest was Darius, Surya, Wang, Gilga.

Cities/wonders:

Memphis, a classic bureau capital"

Thebes, all-purpose GP farm and wonder factory:

Persepolis, Wall Street financial city:

Delhi, military:

Not really a spoiler, but since there's the name of atleast one of the other civ, I hide the text.
Spoiler :

Thanks for your inputs. As you said, I'm able for now, to keep the other civilizations in check via diplomacy. As I built the AP in 1150 AD, I used to force a peace between me and Gilgamesh. Hopefuly, at Noble, they still have some issues to use boats for invasions (especially Galleys ;-) )
I keep building wonders in my 3 towns, Delhi is now creatings units.
I have almost all religions, safe Taoism, I missed it by 4 turns.
I've built, or are still bluilding, temples, monasteries and cathedrals for each religion.
I'll switch to culture building after that.
In 1400 AD, due to a few GA, here's the Culture situation:
Thebes, 39.8k :culture:, 300 :culture:/turn
Memphis, 39.6k :culture:, 80 :culture:/turn
Persepolis, 39.2k :culture:, 70 :culture:/turn

I'm still ahead in tech by 5-6 techs, trading with the 3 other civs. Wang is my best friend :)

I forgot my screenshots at home, I'll post them tomorrow if I don't finish the game
tonight (win or loose :) )

Noble / Marathon, 1764, Cultural Victory.

Spoiler :

That game was very entertaining for me, I've won very few Cultural games, and thus, was quite a challenge for me, jwez11007's advice about diplomacy was quite helpfull, since I tend to warmonger a lot, and not really counting on allies.
I've made a Defense pact with Wang as soon as I can, and then, manipulating the
two others to avoid them to DoW on me.
Safe the initial wars to wipe out Gandhi, Sury and Darius, I made no attempts to fight, but I kept a good amount of units to keep Gilgamesh in check, after his sole DoW on me. I stoped it quickly, without even seeing even an enemi unit (he DoWed throught a spy sabotage), with the AP.
The rest of the game was uneventful :)

Thanks for the game.

I'm glad you had a good time playing this game and I'm also glad that you won a culture VC before Electricity and all the modern culture wonders on Noble. It shows you're picking up the general ideas that can boost your game to the next level.

I will say that after clearing ghandi, darius and sury any VC was well within reach and probably made culture seem easier than it usually is. While I actually prefer culture b/c I think it plays out faster b/c there is less micro after you set it up, I rarely go for it anymore b/c if you misscalculate on higher difficulties you find yourself up a dry creek so to speak with no way to contend with runaway AIs.

Still I commend you on your choice of VC and a good execution of your plan. You clearly leveraged your religious advantage and seemed to recognize the importance of commerce by running your culture slider high.

For future reference, military strength is rarely important if you're planning on moving up difficulties. The military strength required to prevent DoWs quickly becomes impractical the higher the difficulty level. More important is recognizing AIs probable targets and how to avoid becoming one.

First time playing cIV in a while, after taking CiV for a whirl. I've never played Egypt before, and I rarely seem to random Industrious leaders, so this should be interesting.

SIP, going to go Mining > Masonry, then follow that up with AH, BW, Fishing, and Mysticism in some order.
