Sad day, Mandelbrot has died of cancer.

Discoverer of the Mandelbrot set and responsible for the growth of study into fractals and chaos theory.

May he rest in piece.

Now could someone design a coffin in the exact shape of the Mandelbrot Set for him?

Probably not, since the Mandelbrot set is connected (i.e. there are no "islands"). ;)

His awesome legacy shall be appropriated by economics soon...

What! When? :(

Dear Diary: Today I learned that Mandelbrot had a middle initial of B that stood for nothing.

Telegraph.co.uk said:
Benoit B Mandelbrot (he awarded himself a middle initial, although it stood for nothing) was born on November 20 1924 in Warsaw, Poland, into a family of Lithuanian Jewish extraction. His father made his living selling clothes while his mother was a doctor, but the family had a strong academic tradition and, as a boy, Mandelbrot was introduced to mathematics by two uncles.
