So I load up the game and try Mongolia to see what they've got and it creates the game. I notice there's no unit window in the lower left with options on what to do and also when you go inside a city to set production it's impossible to select and start construction of anything. Thus I get to manually move my warrior, I can build my city, and then I'm stuck because it's impossible to end turn 1 without selecting something to construct.

Do you have any mods installed? If so, try disabling them.

You may also want to right-click on the game in steam -> then click on properties -> local files -> verify integrity of game cache.

I have no mods installed. I'm getting frustrated with this game. I've been playing Civ since the first one and this has not been a very enjoyable game to own so far.

Check the integrity of the game files, probably something went wrong with the download/installation of the patch.

Hope this helps

Fine here.. Old saves work fine on modded games as well..

Yup. (Also, Mongolia isn´t a patch; it´s downloadable content, which includes a scenario.)

Have you tried reinstalling the game?

No, I haven't. I didn't think I would have to given the age of auto-updates and crash reports that we live in.

I suppose I could waste time trying it at some point ... or Firaxis could just fix the game.

(Playing on Dual Xeons (16cores), 12 Gig Ram, ATI Radeon HD 5800)

If reinstalling the game fixes it, then it's more likely a data corruption or other related issue.

Really, it wouldn't take much effort on your part, and if it fixes your crashes, wouldn't it be worth it?

If it doesn't fix it, then you've at least eliminated one possible cause.

Re-installing fixed it. Thank goodness I had the disk and it only took about 10-15 minutes rather than hours and hours to download it off the evil malware program called Steam.
