Blood Bowl

I have never played it but I look forward to picking it up at some point, preferably from a store so I can get a boxed copy (I feel like my box of games isn't full enough, but my Steam account is :p).

Also welcome to the All Other Games section :)

It is very cool!

Picked it up with the 33% discount for owners of the regular game, which was nice

There's a few more of the rules implemented, so it's supposedly now a perfect representation of the newest version of the rules for the boardgame (I have no idea if this is true or not).
There's some looooong awaited skill bug fixes, a bit better UI (still not great though), better AI and computer skill choices, a story mode, and a few cool new stadiums (though there's currently a bug in singleplayer and you won't actually see them much). Oh and there's more commentary, but you'll still turn it off because it's still utterly dreadful.

But really you're buying it for all the new teams, and they rock. I'm having a blast with my Necromantic team the Frankenstars, who are sort of a weird hybrid of orcs and skaven and could be my new love. Nurgle were fun but a little slow for my tastes (though the Beast of Nurgle is fricking amazing!), and I'm very keen to try out Norse and Vampires as well.
Player design was a high point of the original, and all the new players look bloody fantastic as well.

For anyone who hasn't played Blood Bowl before, it's well worth checking out - despite being a game about orcs beating up elves on a football field it's actually surprisingly deep and tactical, and in many ways almost chess-like. You know, if chess had lots of dice rolls and let you gang-foul your opponent's bishop when the ref wasn't looking.
I passed the board game by when I was in my Warhammer phase as a kid, which is a shame because it's easily the best actual game (as opposed to excuse-to-paint-miniatures) in the Games Workshop stable.

Yeah, we used to play Blood Bowl back in the day. I played the original computer game when it was released. It was definitely fun, but still lacking.

I bought it last year as well. Definitely worth it, but again, a bit lacking. It was fun but felt incomplete. But I did think that the AI actually handled the game pretty well. I was pleasantly surprised.

It's sitting in my cart now. I think I'll pull the trigger. And yeah, I can't find my old account so I can't take advantage of the 33% discount.

Thanks for the review!! I'll have to practice a bit. The leagues have always interested me. It would be fun to try that out.

well, it is what kept me up till 5 AM tonight :)

keep switching between Norse (probably my favourites if a bit frail. if you ever run into "White and Nordy" say hi before you stomp them into the pitch), Nurgle and Necro. the sheer amount of teams makes multiplayer a lot more fun than before. had a halfling coach almost manage a draw versus my Nurgles last night which was a blast.

It looks really good. If I can just get my collage network to unblock Steam im good to go!

norse rule!

was a bit outclassed as far as game skill goes, I thought, versus an amazon team when the final turn arrived at 1-1. finally managed to get some crowd-surfes going (which resulted in the ball being thrown back by the audience smack in the middle of the pitch) and prevented the opponont from scoring. no longer having any of my petty 3 rerolls at this point I figured "what the heck". my lone Runner, marked by two scantily clad amazons, blitzes for two red dice. he manages to get the push to rid himself of one of them, dodges successfully into the endzone and waits expectantly. a downed agility 2 werewolf which just happened to be prone next to the ball actually manages to pick it up, throw a decent pass past the other amazon but it falls just short.

ball bounces an additional grid, right into the hands of my runner who picks it up, no questions or rerolls asked. 2-1 win and my first ever werewolf-thrown touchdown pass.

sometimes you just have to love this game.

Just upgraded to the Legendary edition, so will probably play a game or two tonight. Not sure which team I want to try now though as there are so many...

I can recommend Necromantic...lots of fun! Cheap, regenerating guys for getting punched in the face over and over and fouling like crazy; solid flesh golems that are immovable barriers and just about the toughest thing around; really nice blitzers; a couple of fast, sneaky dodgers; and werewolves, with their claw and frenzy and super speed as a lethal threat out of anywhere (when they're not busy getting fouled into oblivion, of course). And the combo of golems and wolves really lets you own the sidelines, I've found.
Did I mention they look really cool? Because they look really cool.

Vampires are also really fun, and hypnotic gaze is super lethal, but very hard not to end up in utter disaster with half the team off the pitch without the other side throwing a single punch!

I also want to try Amazon...I've got no idea how to use them, but I suspect you could really frustrate the hell out of a lot of people with them!

true, I just love Werwolves on Necro teams. these guys can do it all.

Norse are also quite popular at the moment, sometimes dubbed the "dwarves that are actually fun to play as well as play against". lots of skills right out of the box at a low TV but you have to be a lot more flexible with your plays.

hmm....

Couple of questions.

Been awhile since I played BB from the first game, so there have been more than a few changes. Whats up with the public leagues? The auld world league is a combo of challenge (unranked) and MM games? I guess this allows a team to sandbag a bit earning some skills via challenges and then playing ranked MM games?

And whats up with the 3 other public turn based leagues? Naggaroth, Albion and imperial. The only difference in those I can see is the TV cap for spiraling costs.

Which one of all these is the most popular? I would prefer to play in a MM only league, but with 3 to choose from it seems like it might be hard to find a game sometimes.

all non-auld leagues are MM only. only played till TV 1500 and only Naggaroth so far due to constantly starting up new teams but it is rare to wait for a game longer than 1-2 minutes on Euro prime time until well into the wee hours of the morning.

Supposedly, Albion is meant to be the newbie league, Auld World the general one, and Naggaroth the more elite one. I think imperial is the real-time one?
But Albion doesn't ever seem to have anybody in it (at least not so far)
According to the blood bowl forums, the naggaroth league actually does seem to have most of the higher level players.
So Auld World seems to be the default one. I reckon it's the best to go with (unless you're really good) simply by having the most people. I think the challenge/MM thing works really well; only MM games can count towards your rank and official wins/losses, but the challenges still let you play against friends or rematch against fun opponents. And because challenge doesn't "count" you don't get people cherrypicking against newbies with goblin teams all their matches.
Yeah you can "sandbag" but increasing your TV only means you're going to be going up against other teams with higher TV (i.e. probably better players, so actually making it more likely you'll lose).

well.... cherrypicking can get you, arguably, to a higher TV and get you playing against higher players once you MM but you'll have the chance to level your difficult-to-level players and less niggling injuries than those who start MM only imho. cherrypicking also makes it a tad easier on those teams who bloom late. not to mention that formerly cherrypicking was more of a "hey, buddy, let me beat up your all-skinks team to get doubles on my big guy" game which is why it still carries a taint for me.

that's fair, though, as all players in that league can do that. just not my cup of tea, personally.

Yeah, I tend to gravitate to a MM only league as well, but the Auld World league is great for friends having a friendly game.

Whats the rule on MM and tv? If you search for a match, how much of a variance in TV will you typically get. So far, the games I have played have been within 30k or so of tv, so its apparently pretty close.

Another question:

Whats your favorite inducement for the money?
