Intro
Spoiler :
The Immortal Cookbook is a concurrent succession game series to help readers learn how to play and win at Immortal level in Civilization 4: Beyond the Sword, v3.19

Some of you may be familiar with the previous Emperor Cookbook games. We decided to raise the level of difficulty to Immortal because we are always playing from the best save and we were often over engineering saves to make them more of a challenge. The difficulty should be approximately equal to Emperor level difficulty, if only slightly harder.

Our Immortal Cookbook game features Augustus "Claus"! We will be playing at Immortal difficulty, NORMAL speed, with a standard sized map. Events are disabled for this game, as they tend to make things more random and it will make for better comparison. However, in the festive mood, I've enabled huts for this one!

Here is the info on our leader, his unique unit and building as well as our starting position and settings:

Events off... rest is standard.
Fractal map. No shenanigans, this is an autosave.

========

To keep the pace going, I've decided to make rounds last EXACTLY one week, from Wednesday to Wednesday. Here's the breakdown of it:

Spoiler :
1-Each Wednesday the save will be posted.
2-Following the posting of the save, I will post some relevant information to the position as well as some suggestions, in spoilers.
3-Players are strongly encouraged to contribute their thoughts in spoilers as well, before reading the other spoilers. Half the work of Immortal is planning while the other half is playing it out :)
4-You can play whenever you want in the week although it might be best to wait for some discussion first - up to you. Round length will be 70/40/40/end unless otherwise said.
5-Play the round and submit your save by Monday, 0h00 GMT. Late submissions will be accepted but you might not get as many comments/votes as otherwise.
6-Voting begins Monday, 0h00 GMT... review the saves and then post your votes and, preferably, why. If not enough votes are generated, I'll handpick the winning save :p

========

Roster:

Spoiler :
YOU! - contributor, voter - our most important fixture, the readers who follow the threads and play along.

Now that we have upped the difficulty level, we will return to the 'best ball' system of selecting and playing saves. What this essentially means is that after we have completed each round, everyone will have a chance to vote on which save is in the best position. The winning save will be used for the next round.

If there is any player who is strong at Immortal+ level, it would be great to have you post your saves to show us how it's done. However, I request that any of you who realize your round was far superior remove your save from the voting. This rule is intended to ensure that the game doesn't get into a overly strong winning position after only a few rounds (because what fun is that? ).

Voting Rules:
Spoiler :
1. You may NOT vote on your own save (but you are encouraged to state the strengths and weaknesses of your save).
2. For your vote to count as winning save you are expected to have voted for 3 other saves where possible. There is an element of fair play expected from those that vote and tactical voting is not allowed.
3. Only those who have posted a round may vote (those who are shadowing are always encouraged to express their opinion!)
4. Please don't vote on a save that has voluntarily been removed from the running by the person who submitted it.
5. At the end of each round you can vote on 3 saves for first, second and third place. I believe that these votes should be made publicly in order to allow for as much discussion as possible. I strongly encourage you to explain why you are voting for a particular save. This is one of the best ways to learn, and that's what this game is all about! If you feel uncomfortable voting publicly, PM me with your vote.

========

And now, about the map!

This is an autosave. The only selected features are mentioned above.

Here's your starting area, with the settler selected to see the game's suggestions.

So... no suggestions.

This should be a fairly easy map, it is quite generous :)
Who can build the most world wonders??? ;) ;)

Round one will last until next week's Wednesday and covers the first 70 turns.

I liked the 70/40/40 opening to the map... how about you?

Is anybody going to move over to the wine? I love settling on wine since it's a pretty lame tile to work later in the game. So I think I'm going to move the warrior on to the wine and see what's around there.

wine on river lame? I guess we disagree there, not related to moving the settler but in general...

Hello Kossin. I have been a long time lurker and an intermittant civ 4 player for a while now. Thanks for hosting all these events!

I think I'll give this one a shot. I recently stepped up to Immortal, so let's not get our hopes up, but the map looks fun and its Rome(although I usually take more peaceful Civs), so even I may have a chance.

I look forward to how this plays out. Good luck all!

will participate too.
Which wednesday is the deadline? you posted on sunday and here in czech rep. we begin weeks by monday, so technically the deadline for me is 22.12. 3 days (including today) for round.

@benginal

well I don't know from memory the wine yield, but I would be worried avoiding those pigs...

for this start the fishing as start tech is not that benefitial.

Does someone plan for Praet rush?

I am interested to see how the huts will skew the results. If happens something like in my NC 64 game where I got Masonry and MC from 2 huts on map with stone and coastal start...

Should have made it an icy map to get into the spirit ;). Most of europe's feeling that, even down here in the midst of an Australian summer we got some snow in our mountains today.

Is there a graphics mod that gives Augustus a beard? Will workers be referred to as Santa's little helpers? I assume there's a close enough neighbour so we can build some praets to "give them presents" (sleigh them?)....

However, in the festive mood, I've enabled huts for this one!

Sadly, the only thing to learn from this game will be who can work out the best hut-pop algorithm :(

I might give this a try later. I am still easing onto immortal level. Although i am taking a barrage of attacks on my current game. Although I seem to of fended off 3 stacks. :)

Sadly, the only thing to learn from this game will be who can work out the best hut-pop algorithm :(

Huts could be a mistake. That said the Ai will probably gain from this as they will start with scouts and archers.

I trust you will announce how easy this game is after round 1 Obsolete? ;)

I do hope Kossin has kept the festive spirit and left us some iron.

Ok so here is my start.

Spoiler :
Ok, I started scouting southwest and found the Maya. First hut popped Agriculture (nice) and the second hut I found scouting provided a map letting me see further into Pacal's land. I decided its Praet rush time. Tech path was Wheel-Agri(hut)-AH-pottery-BW-IW. I settled 2 cities and am about to chop/whip Praets (Provided there's iron around). We'll see. I'm sure others will be more efficient but I'm fairly confident about the future.http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/1378/1200bc.jpg

And give away the pigs+hills? Move the warrior and decide wisely!

You are most welcome! Best of luck.

Me! me! me! In for some Christmas fun :D
Pffff, wait til obsolete calls you a Prat noob with all your cottages!
But yea... gotta give some goodies to everyone.

There's already a xOTM for an icy start if you want...
 Santa's sleigh.

Sadly, the only thing to learn from this game will be who can work out the best hut-pop algorithm :(
You can always worldbuilder them out if you want... they're like XMas socks hanging over the fire... you never know what you're gonna get... or is that a box of chocolate?

Huts a mistake? The human can use 50g much better early game than the AI will use 3 free techs (unless that's Shaka getting BW on t3 and shows up at your door on t40 with a SoD...)

This should clear any doubt about festive spirit:
This should be a fairly easy map, it is quite generous :)

Okay turn 70 is 1200bc. Okay I have now worked that out. 50g could be useful if it means reaching IW.

my poor effort

Spoiler :

well what to say? spot with horses+stone+pigs nearby... no rush for me, more wonders.

I did a mistake with settling for food in 1st ring so I had to tech myst and wait for monument culture and had to switch for slavery :-(.
But I managed to get GW at T69.
3T from Pyramids right now.

To the south there seems barbs already made city, could be nice target.
charlemagne techs like hell with CoL already.

I settled the marble+corn spot too.
For crash recovery we have only cottages ehm, writing is in the works.

The only hut I found gave me 48 gold :-D

To turn 70:

Spoiler :
Nothing much to report. Decided to grab the Great Wall, since it looks like there is lots of land and I had access to stone (though mostly finished it before the stone was connected. D'oh). Started the mids. 3 cities (in retrospect, the third is in a stupid location), giving access to horses and copper (after a border pop) plus stone, of course. I screwed up and went for IW before Writing (more d'oh!) but if there is some handy it'll work out well for a Praet rush against Pacal, while teching Writing.

Grrr, I'm brain dead and forgot to attach the save file.

about start:

Spoiler :
Settling in place looks fine (well the site is crappy for romans so might as well get started turn 0). I am thinking building a warrior while growing to size two then switch to worker -whip it-. research BW -> agri -> AH -> wheel. finish warrior -> warrior -> worker (for more chop power) -> settler. With any luck there is copper and a first target out there :D

I fell going agri -> HR first will give a slower start prod wise...

Alright, I did my unorthodox move this game (don't try it at home...)
Spoiler :

Got second city asap to settle a Trojan-City on stone. Instantly chopped forests with my extra workers to use the wall for barb protection, and also stole another from Pacal, starting a war.

Finally made peace with Pacal near the end, gifting her the junky trojan city after it had served its purpose. I'll re-claim it later when she builds me some infra.

Got a copper city out, as well as a marble city, which I used to build the ToA. Furthermore, I completed both Henge & Mids (last hammer going in this turn) in the capital.
