Academy (Great Scientist tile improvement) provides 5:c5science:.
Compared to a Trading Post it's mere +3 "stuff".

Or is it?

Trading post:
basic: 2:c5gold:
add marketiplace: 2.5:c5gold:
add bank: 3:c5gold:
add stock exchange: 3.66:c5gold:

Academy:
basic: 5:c5science:
add National College: 7.5:c5science:
add University: 10:c5science:
(add Observatory: 12.5:c5science:)
(add Research lab: 20:c5science:)

In comparison to a pop 8 city (an good medieval city):
basic: 8 :c5science:
add Library: 12:c5science:
add University: 18:c5science:
(add Observatory: 24:c5science:)

Conclusion: If used with Babylon super-early, research gained from a well-placed single Academy is probably worth an extra decent city in terms of research. Future scientists are (probably) better used for bulbs.

And if the Academy tile happens to also be a strategic resource one?

Placed on a clean non-river grassland tile it's highly unlikely (especially if you take AH as your first tech). By the time you discover Oil and Uranium it will loose its significance anyway.

If you put it on one of those 3 food tiles, such as cows, you're only giving up the 1 production for the 5 science. So working the tile will also feed half a specialist, mine or lumbermill, without risking blocking an undiscovered strategic resource.

And if the Academy tile happens to also be a strategic resource one?
Depends on the resource.

Of course, you can avoid that by settling on a different resource, cows being the perfect choice.

EDIT: Looks like it's been said already.

In Victoriaville PQ we have an agricultural college :) But It would not work on a cow. When you can build a pasture, you cannot build an academy. It works on horses pre-animal husbandry, when the strategic ressources is still invisible (iron oil aluminium uranium also) because at that point you can farm or build a GP building.

You can build academies anywhere afaik.

I agree that this is the best use of your free GS. It comes so early that using it for teching would invoke a long wait - getting an academy online with NC is an excellent way of speeding you up. Babylon has a very high early research speed because of this.

you can on a cow but you cannot on an oasis. Some mods allow access to ressources when an academy is built on a special tile

I also could not bbuild an academy on a flood plain with sugar so it really doesn t seem to be anywhere. that was in a mod, though, maybe some rules were changed there

What are the chances, really, that you'll build the academy on a resource tile? And even if you do get something like Coal, Oil, Aluminum or Urainum, which is highly unlikely to pop in the inner hex ring of your capital (where the Academy should be placed Anyway), the Academy already served its purpose.

Not so unlikely given that resources can occur anywhere (not every resource but for every terrain there's at least one resource that can be there) and you want to build the academy before researching Animal Husbandry or Iron Working
