I just bought Civ5 yesterday (hard copy). I installed it last night and that all went fine.
When I tried to play the game, it began to "complete installation". However, all it did was sit on 1% done for a while and then it came up with a message saying it had failed to complete the installation. It was incomplete installation #55.

I went to the steam support and looked up how to resolve the issue. I tried running the steamservice installation and it seemed to work (it sat on an empty window for a few minutes) but then I tried the game again and still nothing. After a quick search, I have found only one other person with the same problem. I have tried all the suggestions made to them. The way he got it to work was running Steam as admin, however when I tried this I got the message
"Steam.exe (main exception): Failed to create access mutex"
and then closes.

So, having tried everything I can think of, I am at my wits end. Please can someone suggest anything? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Um... no. Ok, that might work, I'll give a try ty.

Ok, no. That hasn't worked either.
Any other suggestions?

Did you try loading the game as Admin? You may also have to uninstall everything and start fresh in Admin.

Ok, I'll give that a try, ty.

EDIT: Yup, I reinstalled Steam while logged in as admin and now it works! Thankyou everyone.

where can I find REAL info on how to solve a issue with Civ 5? I tried the steam support service, but they only tell me what the problem is and NOT how to solve it and WHERE to look for the ports I have to open. I knew it with be problems because of Steam. I really hate (I don't use the hate word very often) that Steam is required for Civ 5. The problem is:
1. I click play Civ 5
2. message appear: completing installation...1%
3. after 1-2 minutes a new message appear: incomplete installation of Civ 5 (55)

I didn't have problems installing it, so I don't understand this problem. The solution I got from Steam was to open some ports (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8571-GLVN-8711), but I have no clue how to do it. The last time I asked my internet provider to open my ports, they got a little bit upset and refused to do it. I use Comodo Fire Wall (just changed from Windows firewall), and my anti-virus program is Spyware Terminator. I tried to click on the fire wall to see if I could open ports, but found no information about it.
I am supposed to open the following ports: UDP 27000 to 27015 (Game client traffic), UDP 27015 to 27030 (Typically Matchmaking and HLTV and TCP 27014 to 27050 (Steam downloads).

I also got this information, which I don't understand at all. How do I test my modem? and what does that have to do with CIV 5?
I just got internet installed today, can that be the reason maybe.

I know a lot of you will shake your heads and think that I am a stupid fool, but I just don't know much about computers and internet. I miss those days when installing a game was a simple task that took 5 minutes. These days it looks like it's only Mensa members that can play Pc games.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Desperate help-screams from a frustrated gamer...

The ports being discussed are not in your ISP, but in the router/wireless switch/whatever that the Steam folk assume is running in between you and the modem reaching out to your ISP. (Which is why your ISP got all huffy with you. They thought you were telling them how to redesign their network and they hate that.) If you don't have a router type device than it would be settings in your Comodo Fire Wall, and with any luck, it would be settings the configuratation utility could helpfully know about. There is a Steam FAQ and a Support section on this forum where you will get much more complete answers.

thank. I have a modem, my internet doesn't go via a router. my firewall doesn't give me an option to open ports.

but thanks

I did find out. But I can't fix it. it was not what I thought it was.
It says:

Incomplete Installation (55)

This is a Steam Service failure. Please try enabling the Steam Service:

* Exit Steam.
* Click Start > Run (Windows Key + R)
* Type the following command:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\bin\Steamservice.exe /Install

(If you have installed Steam to another path, please replace C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam with the correct path.)

This command requires administrator privileges and may take a few minutes.
* Launch Steam and test the issue again.

BUT when I do that a pop-up error message says that it can't find the file...

I guess you've checked that the path is correct, yes?

To execute something as admin, you have to right click on the file which should be installed, and relavitely at the top (i guess) there should be the option to "execute as administrator" (or similar).

And not that we are purely thinking in the wrong direction: You have either Win Vista or 7 running on your computer, right?

I have XP. the path? yes, but that file is not in the Steam/bin folder.
The problem is that the file that is supposed to be there isn't there, so I can't do that right click thing (admin) either... I have already uninstalled Civ 5 and Steam twice without any changes

think I found the file. but it doesn't have the same name... gonna try it. I am already set as the computer's administrator

The suggested solution would only apply, if you didn't have the rights to install anything because if you were not the admin on your computer or if you didn't execute the install with admin rights, and both is not the case here.

Did you try to install Steam again? Might maybe solve it.
(okay, purely guessing here, but i don't have any other idea :()

I would try to temporarily turn off the fire wall until steam is installed, then turn it back on.

I am now running into the same issue after a reinstall from disk and updating. I'm running XP. The steam support suggested solution does not work--windows will say it can't find "C:\Program" even when I've typed in the full line (minus the '(x86)'). I can manually find the file and start it, but all this does is flash a black box (like a dos window) on the screen momentarily, and then nothing...so it's probably not running the install command.

The reason I uninstalled was because I started to get 20 minute-plus load times on a standard earth map before turn 100, and even trying to start a new game on a small map (not sure if it was earth or not) was taking over 5 minutes. Prior to this, I've never had any problems.

Any ideas?
