I don't play Civ4 online, but I enjoy creating single player games for the long term challenge when I am bored.

I have to first state that I only play for War and Domination victories. Space races are lame and time limits ruin the momentum of the game imo. It would probably be a good idea to note that I don't have any of the expansions too, just good ol' plain CIV4 :)

I have only played Settler and Chieftain so far and I have gotten tired of either getting lucky and wiping everyone out early or the game lasting until every Civ has Future Tech. Then it's just plain boring to try and spend 10 hours just wiping everyone out at that point because the amount and variety of units required are ridiculous.
Wars devastate your development and if you fall behind just the slightest bit, the only person your going to beat is the guy your in a war with, so you better win big and wipe them all out at once.

I figure this is mainly because I am playing Chieftain and the Computer Players don't piss each other off nearly enough, so your the only guy interested in domination.
I am going to try Noble soon to see if that changes, I'm betting it does.

I'm wondering if anyone has any Tech Strategies that are useful in SP.

Here is what I go for in this exact order
[I always use Genghis Khan]

I'd like to know where I am going wrong and how my Tech choices could be more efficient. Honestly, I don't see my Short Term being flawed, and for Mid Term I usually aim to get Markets, Grocers, and Banks right away because by that time, I'm running low on funds. By the time the Long Term comes around, they pay off enormously.

It's my long term choices I haven't put much thought into but tbh it's because I don't care for the long term win, I like to win them fast because like I said, if I don't, I'm stuck waiting until every other Civ has hit the Tech dead-end too.

I also mostly play Pangea games. I don't like the hassle of messing around with Navel units all game. Especially when you can't attack anyone in bulk land units because most boats only carry 1-3 units, so it's a boring and endless repetition of loading units into boats and sending them back and forth... personally, that seems to kill the fun.
So that is why you'll notice my tech order neglects navel strategy.

Anyways... shoot any suggestions at me :)

I didn't see Horseback Riding on your list. I'm not too terribly experienced myself, so I hesitate to offer advice, but as Genghis (especially going for Kill-em-all on Pangea) I'd beeline HR to get those Keshiks out there rampaging. IIRC, Vanilla has UUs but not UBs, so you'll miss out on building Gers- but get HR, build Stables, and crank out a bunch of Keshiks early on. My 2:gold:.

:band:

Welcome to CFC!

EDIT: Just looked at the vanilla tech tree, apparently Stables didn't exist yet. :(

First of all, you will find better advice over on the S&T forums

No offense, but the list of techs is bollocks. First of all, Archery is not something you should bother teching below Deity. It's a dead in tech that you can easily trade for later or beg off an AI. (I will caveat that you may want it somewhat early if going for UUs like Keshiks, but there are more important techs you need first)

Tech order is situational. It is about playing the map. First, you need to be concerned about workers techs for the specials in your capital to get those bonuses asap. Also, you should build a worker first. The exception is certain coastal starts depending on what the seafood is and what the land food specials are - also, if you start with the Fishing tech. Then strat tech to get up horses, bronze or iron for defense or a possible rush of a nearby AI - which is actually quite likely on Pangaea. Next concern is expansion and getting out more workers and settlers to grab up land before the AI so that you can establish a decent empire from which to launch your attack and build your economy. (Note: Iron Working may be delayed if you show horses or copper unless you have a lot of jungle)

I think you really limit yourself with the game by only playing one Leader and map. You appear to have a fairly one-sided view of the game, so I'm not sure how much I can help other than offering recommendations. The fun in this game is had from the great complexity and variety. HOwever, "fun" is subjective so do whatever floats your boat - oh wait, you don't have boats :)

(NOte: Granted navy in general is not always a priority on Pangaea, but Sailing can be an important tech on many maps for more than just boats and lighthouses - it also helps establish lucrative trade routes)

Lastly, posting a game can allow members to provide more specific and detailed advice to improve your game. Settler and Chieftain are outrageously easy once you learn some basics - it's not even funny :)

Again, head over to the S&T forums. I highly recommend more open-mindedness regarding CIV as there is lots to explore and do.

Also, I really recommend getting BTS. It's the latest and greatest and far superior. Plus, there are some great mods that will enhance your gaming experience without changing basic gameplay, including the interface, information and even graphics.

When you move to Noble, you will only start with one bonus tech, so you will need to research Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, the Wheel, and possibly Fishing early on, depending on which resources you have nearby. You will find the game quite different moving up to Noble. Adjust your tech choices according to what is available resource wise and via trade with the AIs. They start researching at a respectable pace in Noble.
