WOW!!!

I need to start by saying that I am one of those who is generally in the CiV camp. I like the game—it IS different, but I feel like there were a lot of improvements and I don’t feel like I got one less penny less value for my dollar than I should have. Having said that, there was still something missing. I was playing a LOT of domination games and not feeling like things were developing in my empires with quite the BALANCE I was actually used to. So, I was playing, but not particularly a fanboy—I found myself wanting more. And many of you helped me define for myself just what the more was. And it mostly boils down to balance. In production, in use of food resources, in usefulness of buildings, in the SP Tree, etc.

So, I was intrigued when I read a post about Thal’s Balance Combined Mods. I was intrigued enough as an old dog who doesn’t really like learning new tricks to log on to the mod browser, search for thal and download almost all of his mods and his unofficial patch. I must admit here that I did not use the two he had that made the tech tree develop more slowly. I then started a new game and discovered that none of the mods I had downloaded were working! Took me a while to figure out how to actually install the mods once I got them downloaded—as I said, old dog, new tricks.

Anyway, I cannot say enough good things about the work Thal has done to enhance MY EXPERIENCE as a gamer! This was absolutely the best game of CiV I have played to date. This is much more the game I was hoping for. Cities developed much more smoothly, buildings were more useful, tile improvements were more sensible (actually got more food from cows, sheep, deer, and fish!), Social Policies were slightly more useful and more attainable. I was actually able to open and progress partly through 6 trees!

I was playing as France, Prince, Continents, Abundant Resources, everything else standard. I was able to actually grow a civ based on four cities. As I “brought French enlightenment” to the rest of the continent in the early to mid game, I was never quite at the head of the pack, so it was not feeling like a done deal. Had several challenging discussions with those who were less than enthusiastic about accepting enlightenment. As my continent turned mostly blue, the other was largely yellow. Siam was running away over there. At the beginning of the end game, I saddled up and crossed the water. I fought to take back the old Mongol civ from Siam, was poised to cross the badlands to take the Siamese capital then turn on Rome and I paused.

It was remarkable that my empire had developed in quite a balanced way. At this point I could have completed the domination, built the spaceship, or gone for cultural—all three were within reach. I HAD A CHOICE not predetermined by playstyle decisions made at the start of the game. And I decided to finish the spaceship rather than conquest.

As I said, it was a great game with lots of choice and options with cities growing easily into the 18-20 range with tons of buildings in each. I had more fun than I have in a long time. I cannot recommend Thal’s mods highly enough. I will not personally be playing again without them.

Try them, they might give you what you are looking for—they surely filled some holes for me.

I've been wondering about those mods, Polish. Thanks to your review I'll go get 'em and see what happens.

yeah maybe some good mods will make civ 5 playable.

I'm a huge fan of Thal myself and followed the development of the balance mods closely, also beta-testing many versions. I can assure you it's more than worth trying! ;)

Don't feel scared off if some of the changes feel new and alien to you in the first moment. They were all thoroughly discussed and tested, nothing is implemented lightly or without good reason (except in the dev builds of course).

You'll be fascinated how much potential Civ5 has if someone only had finished it ;)

I really enjoy the enhanced food resource mod and the balanced improvement mods. The food resource makes it much easier to keep my empire happy and the balanced mod increases production speeds.

I wish someone would make a mod that increased the happiness of colosseums and theaters though. When going for domination, it is a real pain to maintain happiness while constantly acquiring new cities.

That's by design. It *should* be a pain to maintain happiness while constantly acquiring new cities.

That's what happiness is for, to limit your expansion.

Thal's Balance mods are excellent, particularly in how they favor vertical growth over horizontal growth, how they remove some of the no-brainer decisions, and how they make strategic resources more meaningful.

This is actually true for many games. Many mods are definitely worth giving a try, for example in Victoria 2 the vanilla economy is basically broken, which is significantly improved in mods. And in Civ5, installing and testing mods is easier than ever ;)

If you never tried a mod before, Thal's balance combined is an excellent way to start getting hooked, and I can only recommend trying it to anyone. But don't forget also trying other mods *cough*

Welcome to CivFanatics, JohanBerg! :)

I'm glad you're enjoying the mod, and as Alpaca said try out others too. Alpaca's PlayWithMe mod is a very interesting take on creating a different style of armed combat. I've gotten quite a few ideas from him, and it's fun to try out new things.

I'm working on a new release of the mods that will contain everything as sub-folders of one package, similar to the download available on CivFanatics here. Hopefully this will make it easier to get the package on the Mod Browser.
