Welcome to the Lonely Hearts Club, the second time around. Having finished all the leaders in the first round, we're starting again. This thread is for discussing the series as a whole and planning which leaders to do when, and this message is for summarizing what has happened so far; it will get edited as needed.

The purpose of the club, from r_rolo1:
Welcome to the first edition of the Lonely Hearths Club for BTS. In the Lonely Hearts Club we explore strategies to cope with one of the most dreaded situations in Civ IV ( possibly the main reason for reloads after the military collapse one ): starting in isolation....

Spoiler :

Our next leader is Leader of the Civ, whom we last played in LHC num (possible commentary). The Civs start with tech1 and tech2.

Again a small request ( not mandatory ) :

We ask the participants to do, if possible, a write-up with the victory save and a description of your game ( strategies, techs researched, wars,...). All the info should be in spoiler tags ( to not disturb other people's games ). If you want ( we would like to ) post reports at this moments of the game:

Checkpoint 1 - when we have explored the island and are aware of what resources it has. Its not so important when this is, but this is a time to discuss city sites etc. Don't look into a checkpoint 1 spoiler until you have reached this point yourself.

Checkpoint 2 - first contact - when we have met all the other AIs. At this point we can discuss our strategy to get to this point and our plans for dealing with them.

Checkpoint 3 - when we are committed to a victory condition (or at least think we are).

Checkpoint 4 - Victory (or defeat).

The last words are to wish good luck to all . And let the games begin!

P.S We don't have any kind of problem with defeats and reruns. Just play and enjoy

A cut and past regarding the ownership (and other features) of the series from r_rolo1
First of all I do not consider any of the games closed... so If you want to play and/or post in one of the previous games, feel free to.

Second, I do not claim any kind of ownership over the LHC series ( the concept isn't even mine... BTW where are you, willpax? ). If someone wants to host a LHC ( especially in Vanilla or Warlords ( I'll not go back there ) , I'll be happy and will post a link here as well.

Third, I'm not oposed to the idea of a rerun of any of the already played leaders ( especialy Liz, that had a seriously bad island ), but , given the avaliability of leaders still unplayed ATM, I'll only do that if there is a strong will from a good number of players in doing so. Of course that things can change when we already played a good number of leaders....

And a special thanks to r_rolo1, and those before him for making this series a great one.

With Ramesses well underway, the next LHC will be up on the weekend of the 11th or 12th. Apologies for the three day delay but i will be going back to college tommrow evening and will not have civ access untill Friday 11th. Im wondering who do people want to see for the next leader. Im thinking Elizabeth or Augustus for a fun entertaining map, or do you want somebody who is more challenging to play? Suggestions on the map/leader are welcome.

Roos or Pacal

I have another question for the people who will play this game, huts/events on or off? For Ramesses they were off but I know in for NC games they are on and advice is given on how to turn them off. It seems not many people like events, don't know about huts, what would be best?

As for next leader, how about Mansa Musa? I never play Mansa... and I like lymond's suggestion for Roos, nice easy GLH my favourite crutch.

Mabey i could do Mansa and then on the following week you could do Roosevelt?Pacal is a intresting suggestion aswell by lymond, he could be after Roosevelt...

Playing the leaders that lend themselves to isolated play more than others might be detrimental considering the long run. Basically, Industrious, Financial and Philosophical leaders are something I'd consider "good" for LHC while the other traits aren't really all that influential in the long run.

That said, it's a great thing that someone is taking the initiative in reviving the series but I just wanted to give my comment regardless. Just food for thought. Personally I'd say Montezuma or Suleiman for the next installment, or at least have them in the near future. Suleiman is actually a pretty good LHC'r with Philo and while most people say Imp is weak, myself included, it is actually pretty useful for a game where you're probably focusing on Wonders and settling is not the "main" focus as landgrabbery is less important than in a crowded place. Logic here is that you don't have to spend time on those settlers and can focus on Wonders/infra. On top of that, the Hammam is nice.

Well, I'm beginning to ramble so I better stop!

Huts & events off - ugh..

They mess up any comparisons, plus they're too random to be enjoyable.

So, suggestions we've had so far:
Liz (fin/phi)
Augustus (ind/imp)
Roosevelt (ind/org)
Pacal (fin/exp)
Mansa (fin/spi)
Montezuma (agg/spi)
Sulieman (spi/imp)

Fleme suggests less of the isolation suited leaders immediately so we can have a good spread of them (and I agree) so maybe
Monty (agg/spi)
Pacal (fin/exp)
Sulieman (phi/imp)
for the next three, as they are not Ind and not suggested by one of us hosts and then some other leader like Churchill (cha/pro) or Zara (org/cre) and then return for Roosevelt or one of our other preferred leaders.

Also, no huts/events it is

I am leaning towards Pacal or monty for the next game. I could do mansa and have really challenging AI's to deal with, you know the ones that are psyco's and build a heck load of units. But that might be too much of a challenge for our lower level players. What do you think?

That Mansa idea could work but they might get angry with each other, not trade and slow down the tech pace leading to an easier victory. However, that may not happen with similar peaceweights and such, I don't know :undecide: Could use some advice from more experienced players here. We could run a test game to see how backward they might be.

Pacal or Monty is fine for next game. Whichever one you don't do this time I'll do next. Although I have just noticed that Ramesses is Spi as well as Monty so probably Pacal next to avoid repeating Spi.

Good call, Pacal it is then.

Playing augustus in isolation just seems a waste of his talents. I like the pacal choice- resourceless UU in case there's no metals on the island, good economic traits. He will be a strong choice.

As I recall, Monty was played some years ago.

Yes he was one of 10 leaders played twice in the original run of the series although the last one was over a year ago that coupled with a desire to avoid repeating traits Monty probably won't be done immediately after Pacal.

Playing augustus in isolation just seems a waste of his talents.

Hopefully we'll get around to all of the leaders eventually. Plus, you could say isolation is part of his talents, Fleme suggested why Imp would be good for isolation and the Ramesses game demonstrates how Ind is nice (admittedly the resource setup helped a bit). Many UUs are weakend by isolation, the praetorian is one of them.

The next game, with Suleiman of the Ottomans (not Roosevelt as we agreed Stevoh coz he's ind and Monarch Student got there first I tried to PM you but I managed to send it to myself like 4 days ago ), will be up tomorrow, in the mean time here is a proposed schedule for future LHCs organised with the vague intention of avoiding repeats of trait or civ:
Sulieman(Phi/Imp)
Churchill(Cha/Pro)
Willem(Fin/Cre)
Monty(Spi/Agg)
Zara(Org/Cre)
Augustus(Imp/Ind)
Peter(Phi/Exp)
Wang Kon(Pro/Fin)
Hammurabi(Org/Agg)
Brennus(Spi/Cha)
Victoria(Imp/Fin)
Napoleon(Cha/Org)
Qin(Ind/Pro)
Genghis(Imp/Agg)
Isabella(Spi/Exp)
Pericles(Cre/Phi)
Boudica(Agg/Cha)
Frederick(Org/Phi)
Hatshepsut(Cre/Spi)
Ragnar(Agg/Fin)
De Gaulle(Ind/Cha)
Joao(Exp/Imp)
Tokugawa(Agg/Pro)
Roosevelt(Ind/Org)
Suryavarman(Cre/Exp)
Hannibal(Cha/Fin)
Charlemagne(Pro/Imp)
Gandhi(Phi/Spi)
Washington(Cha/Exp)
Darius(Fin/Org)
Gilgamesh(Cre/Pro)
Alexander(Agg/Phi)
Justinian(Imp/Spi)
Lincoln(Phi/Cha)
Louis XIV(Cre/Ind)
Elizabeth(Fin/Phi)
Mehmed(Exp/Org)
Saladin(Pro/Spi)
Stalin(Agg/Ind)
Cyrus(Cha/Imp)
Asoka(Org/Spi)
Shaka(Agg/Exp)
Sitting Bull(Phi/Pro)
Julius Caesar(Imp/Org)
Huayna(Fin/Ind)
Kublai(Agg/Cre)
Bismark(Exp/Ind)
Mansa Musa(Fin/Spi)
Catherine(Cre/Imp)
Mao(Exp/Pro)
and unless anyone stops me it will be WITH huts/events ON and if I'm feeling in a kind mood (ie if I have time) I may provide saves without them too.
Problems? Comments?
If you're still playing the Pacal game (like me) or haven't even started don't worry and feel free to post in the game's thread at any time.
Hopefully the next 50 saves will be isolated :D

@Hrun
NC are doing Zara now - maybe swap him with Willem to add another month until we play Ethiopia again? (assuming games every 2 weeks)

Events ON/OFF can be set in 'custom scenario', so not a big deal what the setting in the save is. As for Huts, if you upload with them ON, I'll strip them out for my own game, and I'm happy to upload the resulting saves if you like.

LHC Churchill will be up tommrow, i think i'll upload my games on saterday's instead of fridays from now on. I have more time on saterday's for messing around with the WB and typing up the thread. It won't conflict with the NobelsClub which is also up every seccond friday. This will also give people an extra day for finishing the previous game.
