Hello.
Welcome to the 2nd installment of OCCC MarkII. Slight delay getting the game out...playtested one map and found it overly difficult for prince, so I tweaked the settings and rolled another map.

This week we play as Boudica/Celts on prince difficulty. Boudica starts with hunting and mystcism. Her traits are aggressive/charismatic. Not the best OCC traits, but good for our preferred VC of conquest. If you want to go conquest, make sure you keep coastal access. Boudica's UB is the dun...free guerrilla1 promo to eligible units. Her UU is the gallic warrior...a swordsman that starts with free guerrilla1 promo. That can be very powerful if you can get gallic warriors to guerrilla3 promo for hills defense/attack bonuses and especially 50% withdrawl chance.

To take advantage of the UU/UB, the map is global highlands. There are at least 2 continents, so you will have to balance quick conquest of your own continent with keeping tech pace to invade overseas. I think this will provide a good challenge...although it will probably make for a longer game than normal on OCC.

Other map settings: no huts / no events / vassals ON / dense peaks / massive continents / ridgeline mountains / high seas / rocky. Standard map size with 6 AI opponents.

Preferred VC is conquest

I've attached a zip file with worldbuilder saves for prince and monarch. The prince version can be used for prince- and the monarch can be used for monarch+...I gave the AI archery on the monarch file. If you play on imm/deity, the AI will not start with ALL their bonus techs, but it's close enough since they tech so fast anyway.

To play, simply download and unzip it into your BTS/Saves/WorldBuilder folder. Start the game, and load your favorite MOD (or not). Select "Play Scenario", and look for "OCCC Boudica prince" (or "OCCC Boudica Monarch" if you want the AI to start with its usual Archery bonus tech). Choose your level/speed/etc... If you choose to play at monarch+ you will need to go into worldbuilder after the game is started and give the barbarians archery unless you want the AI to roll over barb cities easily. There is no way to add barb archery in the wb file.

I look forward to writeups of better OCC conquest players than myself. Bloodthirsty warmongering is not my normal style. I could learn a lot from a good conquest write-up. :ar15:

Enjoy the game. Let me know if there are any problems with the zip/wb files.

1971 conquest (vassals) @monarch, epic
Spoiler :

Strange game, did not feel like an OCC at all. I only built three wonders (mids, glib, pentagon) and had way fewer scientists than normal. Not being IND or PHI and not having stone makes for a tough wonderspam...

Research was beeline writing - CS - edu - steel (lib) - assembly line
Armed with infantry plus cannons I vassalized the continent pretty straightforward. Started against longsbows (that was fun!) and ended against redcoats.

After that I researched a bit until combustion and industrialism to get BB + transport + marines. I loaded my army in a bunch of transports and attacked zara followed by gandhi.

Naval warfare was a pain against tech parity. Every ship lost is a turn production plus 4 turns to get there. Ghandi destroyed most of my escorts and jaoa did a sneak attack to finish off my navy. Fortunately, by that time my army was on the other continent and gandhi had vassalized.

Jaoa went down quickly under a barrage of nukes. His colony on my continent went down last after seeing tanks on their porch.

I'm very unhappy with my end date, I'm sure this can be done much much quicker.

Dubious decisions:
1) I left my forest intact, mainly because I wanted the health bonus - I was not going to build NP
2) I built maoi. In retrospect it might be better to build HE or NP
3) I attacked the other continent with transports and marines and a bunch of planes from a carrier. Maybe I should have researched to fission first, built a shitload of tacticals on subs and just destroy or at least cripple each rival in one turn (give or take for non-coastals).

I feel vassalizing the home continent with steel + rifles/infantry is good because they need some time to fill up the empty spaces and get your resources...

Spoiler :

i will say one tip for anyone creating maps --- without industrous or stone OCC is not fun.
Well, with them it might get boring but without it is hard. You can win but not always especially up in dificulty.

At least Boudica provides some hapiness via charismatic trait....

Spoiler :

Upped to emperor level. Happy that i did not tried on immortal....

Went with gorwth on henge, workboat, workboat. Built worker on size three probably. Well, needed to mine pigs....

Put some arly hammers in ids hoping it helps. Without mids OCC is usually very tough and without stone that is a lot of hammers.... Especially playing with Alpha priro BW....

After basic techs went Oracle:
Spoiler :
oraclei.jpg

Part of me wanted to Oracle Agriculture but i took religion....

Gave a thought of converting Someone to Confu but they were all budhist family before missioniary went to them. So put poor guiy to do a bit fogbusting on coast.

After that went for Writing>Alpha while going for Mids. Got represantation at something like 800BC. Ugly late.

Traded Writing and Alpha to crawl into parity:
tradex.jpg

Begged for Archery since Ragnar went in full hand mode. Luckily he got involvedwith Vicky.

Temple of Arthemis was still open, but really had no shot at it due to barb galleys.

Galleys were ugly business untill i got trireme.... But that happened so late....

Although mentioned trireme opened HE towards the end
heroicz.jpg

Meanwhile Aesthetics +marble meant moar wonders....
wonderspam.jpg

Liberalized Chemistry at arround 1000K just to be safe. Selfed teched steel, which leads to question....

Should i attack now or wait for infantry

Techs in end
civ4screenshot0000u.jpg

Vicky is advanced due to trades, Ragnar is backwards but vassaled under Willem which means they have like twenty cities total....

And i totally would not mind adding ironworks to HE, NE, and Oxford [once again i think Globe was mistake should have built NP to fight unhealthiness].

Will see how it ends. But i guess making quick caravel to find other continets and after go with canons and infantry on willem.

Played up to 1000AD approx and some thoughts. Prince level.

Spoiler :

Not the easiest of leaders for an OCC. One of the few starts where I didn't bother with a worker for a long time. Tech path went fishing - poly - priest - writing - col - math oracle - Civil Service. Without stone I didn't even bother starting the mids till I had Civil Service. Wonders built so far. Oracle - Mids - HG - GLib. Nat wonders Nat Epic - Globe - Oxford.

Now struggling trying to decide what way to progress. A few more turns to go on Chem when I'll be able to lib steel.

Still undecided on my last 2 Nat wonders. Have opened the HE and as I won't need an Ironworks tempted to go for that instead. As for last Nat wonder although the Nat Park will be huge here I'm not sure whether going for Bio is worth it.

Pleased to say whilst writing this I managed to make up my mind HE it is. After steel will head for rifles then on to AL and avoid Sci Meth so I can keep the GSs from the GLib and at least manage a bit of teching. So have to see how that goes.

Actually I kind of like it; I played a much less wonderspammy game than normal. I played on monarch and winning was never in question, so I guess I could have played emperor. Higher than that probably not.

Did anyone really use the UU or UB? It seems that OCC has no choice but to use early speed to gain a tech advantage that is sufficient to wipe out the rest of the world. MAYBE vassalizing the continent before astro could work, but I doubt that it really pays off...Navy seal would have been much nicer on such maps...

I did not consider getting CS before the mids, that's an intersting choice. I think mids are so important, both for happy and for tech, that it seems silly to postpone.

I wonder if optimal play here isn't to tech mining-masonry-bronze working and chop out the mids while researching writing and COL just to get the scientist game on sooner. I chose to keep forests but I think that is a mistake given the early need for wonder hammers...

@vanatteveldt

Spoiler :

I haven't taken the time to finish my game or do a writeup yet, but I took out our initial continent with guerrilla3 promo gallic warriors.

Oracle->Theo
Great People: GS (academy), Gprophet (CS bulb), can't remember what the third was...maybe GS for partial Edu bulb.
Did not build the mids
currently trying to figure out how to invade the other continent...probably will need rifles versus muskets. They have longbows.

@ Soirana
Spoiler :

Thanks for playing and your comments. I did not want every single game to be wonderspam with stone and Ind/Phi traits. I agree it makes a harder/longer game than standard OCC and doesn't scale well to higher levels. However, I'm not going to try to balance a prince map to deity. With high seas and uranium...I thought this one would at least be possible on emp.

Wouldn't call that with uranium.

Conquest Victory 1920

Spoiler :

Not much to add. Took steel from Lib and took Han/Rag/Vic as vassals in that order. Next took on Joao/Ghandi. Had to make peace with Ghandi as Joao wouldn't vassal to me. After him killed of Zara and Ghandi for a conquest victory 1920.

Very slow game. I couldn't get uranium off Han for transports so ended up using wooden ships for crossing the sea and without oil no tanks either later on.

Will give this a go this weekend, This will be my first OCC so i'm not sure about going for conquest but i'll do my best.

Spoiler :

Well, brought Vicky map first thing. Damn she reached other guys already....
Quickly made caravel sent in opposite diraction and kept buying her map each turn....
Luckily got my bonus to ship movement. Surely it will save some sanity later on.

Changed my war plan actually. Figured lats thing i want is to give already advanced wiki room to expand.

Things did not went very smoothly

First i got declared by Jao since i refused to give some tech.
jaoq.jpg

well, given amount of galeons he lost i think he got things right in end.

Ended trading for rifling since Vicky beelined it.
rifling.jpg

Redcoats clearly meant i will need infantry.

So i teched to AL and expleined my Englsih friend i am not so keen on her tech rate being so good.... Took a bit persuasion...

firstbp.jpg

englishu.jpg

That was all remaining England. Well, not bad startegy wise, as it was blocking Hanibal from open land, giving me +2health in securing oil for future...

Ragnar will expand in exenglish zone, but since i plan split him by hitting heavy on his master it is passable.

Hanibal was easier since i brought artilery. And no redcoats too. Still shitload of cities to burn and lots of them on hills too.
oneless.jpg

ofcourse jao and ghandi started settling on our continet.... Okay, that makes them land targets eventually...

Problem is i don't have neither of coal/uranium/oil without trades or reaching legendary....

Uranium would solve things as nuclear holocaust would solve some things rather nicely....

Will see how it goes and i need whack out Ragnar. Other two at least can function as trade partners, viking most likely is going to die.

Luckily on highlands AI is chronically unable to get any tech rate going...

Spoiler :

Started with wiping out vikings. Got some promos which will be handy in next war, but ended like 15 points short from next GG so no military academy for nukes:(

atlast.jpg

well i had to wait ages before vassasls settled uranium

finallyf.jpg

Home continent ended like this
eventualland.jpg

Zara actually gained quite a lot...

I used vassals to help in teching and also chopped in Cristo despite not being first to radio... Well, i planned some switches later [police state, state property and free religion i believe was end civics].

Got oil at some point from Vicky to railroad mines and built some navy [navigationII+circumnavigation+refrigeneration bonuses is not a bad for fresh units.]. Navy mainly consisted of subs and transports....

After that i gave fission to Hanibal so i could
herewegok.jpg

From that point nuke spam started....

Meanwhile:

civ4screenshot0013p.jpg

civ4screenshot0015e.jpg

Once i switched to hammers he started seriously outeching me.... And got UN chair handily built bu Ghandi... and had Mechinfantry.... and....

jaoout.jpg

Where is he?

Had to kill him in one turn which needed some planing and some scouting....
Well, simply could not afford him getting on mine navy....

Well, he did had some inland cities, but.... But i had some c4Comando infantry from previous war. So as long as i ntook care not to nuke the roadwork fort them....

I always knew Boudica traits and some settled GG will help:)) And thanks to Zara for allowing to locate troops too...

So i spammed nukes another 25 turns and irradiated India.
Ghandi was slight problem since he had some inland cities behind mountain chain. Well, problem was i needed to shift workers to make railroad for commando guys:)

Well, i still have Zara but since he was slowest techer from the three of these I guess i will take my time on him...

Conquest victory 1928ad, prince & normal speed.
Spoiler :
Went for Nat. Park and teched my way up to tanks, then destroyed everybody on the initial continent with them + some blitz-battleships (to take out hostile naval forces and bomb coastal cities to smithereens) & two cannons (just for bombing the cultural defences in inland cities). Then went to capture the other continent with also some nukes at hand. Built a total of 30 tanks, lost 7 in the process mainly to some machine guns here and there. No troops were lost after getting nukes.

I'm a little frustrated with vassals in OCC (haven't played many conquest OCCs before). I always think that they will just settle some cities to replace the lost ones and then break free so that I have to take them down again...

Nice writeup, Soirana! :goodjob:

(General discussion, no spoilers needed?)

I've played some OCC conquests (although they can be tedious) and never had a vassal break away, mainly because you need to seriously cripple them to get them to capitulate, generally back to 1 city.

Have people had trouble (this game or others) with capitulated OCC vassals breaking free?

Was a bit worried about 1 of the AI breaking free which is why I didn't gift that many techs. After knocking him down to 2 rubbish cities he got back to at least 9 but didn't break free. Then again don't think I've ever had a vassal break free but most of my OCC games end up in space.
