In an interview with USA Today in 2006, Tom Petty calls his own Room at the Top "one of the most depressing songs in rock history," adding that "If anything will make you want to kill yourself..."

So discuss this: What is the most depressing song in rock history?

Im gonna stay out of this thread or I'll get depressed myself. So don't get after me for quoting T.P. cause I won't be around to answer ;)

Not really rock, but this has to be a top contender:

Interestingly, no-one seems able to agree on what actually happens in the story narrated by the song. My view:

Spoiler :
The bride hasn't just run off - she's killed herself.

possibly the most depressing album in rock history is Berlin, so I'll include a song from that.

And I do want to mention that Johnny Cash's hurt mentioned above is a cover song of a NIN song, but Cash's version is more depressing. So I agree with that. Also Adam's Song is a good choice too.

This song without fail would always bring my Dad to tears. It gets to me too. Especially at the climax. One of the saddest songs I've ever heard. Jerry's voice is so solemn and morose, and then you actually start listening to the lyrics. :(

Another very sad one. It sort of catches you off guard because you think it's a very pleasant and happy song, and then all of a sudden Jerry drops the bombshell (Sweet William he is dead, pretty Peggy-O). What's even sadder about this particular performance is that he died a little over a year after this performance. Definitely one of Jerry's best ever.

The first time I heard this song the line (I spoke not a word though it meant my life/I had been in the arms of my best friend's wife) brought me to tears. I don't know why, but this song always gets to me. Great song, one of my favorites from The Band

The backing vocals on this song always get to me.

Oh god, Black Peter.... half the time I have to skip that song when I listen to Workingman's. It's just too damn sad.

John Lennon never quite got over his mother's death when he was 17 - he wrote three songs about her, this being the saddest.

"Memories" by Skullhead. I won't post a link, because although they weren't a rasist band themselves, they were heavily involved in the rasist scene. The song is about someone being killed by the IRA.

When I'm heavily depressed, there tend to be only a few songs I can listen to, but they're not necessarily depressing within themselves, per se. Some of them are:
The Toasters - Razor Cut (not exactly rock, but relevant, IMO):

The Clash - Lost in the Supermarket (a beautiful song!):

"Train in Vain" from the same album could also count.

Jesu - Silver (another beautiful song, nice to get up to, nice to listen to when I'm down, nice to listen to when I'm feeling nostalgic...):

Paraf - Ti Jos Nisi (in fact, generally there's a correlation between me listening to the entire album and me feeling down. I think I listen to it when I'm down 'cus I associate it with some down times, and it gives me a little comfort):

Eddie & The Hot Rods - Do Anything You Wanna Do (another "on repeat"-er. Also the version by The Business. I'm not sure why, maybe I just associate the care-free attitude with pessimism that life isn't actually care-free):

The Business - Out in the Cold:

Alice in Chains - Down in a Hole:

And a few other AiC songs.

Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun:

And a few other Soundgarden songs.

Thats a few of them, when I'm heavily depressed, I'll only probably even be able to only listen to a small percentage of this list, even...?wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Pekinska Patka - Monotonja (if I'm feeling particularly down and want to listen to it, I might put it on repeat):
