Because Perf lives a society with a Christian heritage, Perf needs a bible. But Perf needs a good Bible, what's the best Bible for Perfs?

IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER:
1. Perf doesn't want an archaic hard to read Bible.
2. Perf likes scholarly notes and appendices and whatnot to help understand this Bible stuff
3. Perf's bible should be relevant to understanding Christianity as it exists today and in the past in the most mainstream manner. Perf doesn't want some weirdo bible.

NOW GO FORTH AND FIND PERF A BIBLE!

Call your local mormons and ask for a King James version. It's footnoted and comes with a helpful index and Bible Dictionary.

Two version that are good are The KjV, even though it does use some archaic words, but we still study Shakespeare and that uses archaic word, or you could use NASB. Basically use a Bible that translates the original language word for word, rather than just thought for thought, like some version do, like the NIV, since it is not an accurate way of translating.

The Catholic Church just approved a new one.

Perf, you've described the New Revised Standard Version. JollyRoger agrees with me, so he must be smart. ;) It's the preferred choice of academics and the token firewood of fundamentalists everywhere.

Authorized KJV, and also the New International Version.

You really will need more than one.
I'm not at this point doing in-depth bible study. This is for casual reading sessions to get me at a fairly basic level of biblical literacy.

Well being 100% word for word is impossible, since it would make no sense in our language, so you see some version with words in italics to give you and understand of what the translators added to make the translation flow better in English.

Unfortunately, biblical literacy will require a little more than casual reading...but not too much. When reading each book, you'll want to find out the author and genre, which the Oxford commentary will likely a good job of doing. Or just do a quick online search.

I know... Otherwise we'd be starting at 11 versions.

Spoiler :
The sounds of laughter begin to fade in from all directions.

The Bible our Divinity students study out of is the New Oxford Annotated Bible, New Revised Standard Version translation.

You won't find a better Bible.

I own this. Allow me to be the third (after JR and Integral) to recommend it. Be warned, it's not something you can carry around with you.

Plotinus has a good post here, which basically says "read the NRSV, or the Good News Bible (GNB) if you want something easier but a little less accurate."

He also rakes the NIV over the coals for being generally crappy and putting fundamentalist doctrines over original meanings.

I hear the Oxford Annotated Bible is well regarded, it's probably the best choice for study. Don't overlook the King James version though, if only because if its monumental influence on the English language.

Read the NIV for perspective of certain modern Christian sects, but read others so your brain does not rot.
