For this story im going to play a game of Rhye's and Fall of Civilisations using the Americans, aiming for a conquest or a domination victory. To spice the game up I have first completed a Babylonian conquest victory and then swapped civs (a feature of RFC) This American game will start just at the point where I could have won.

Here's some screenshots of the starting situation, I should get some playing done over the weekend.

good luck, you're going to need it.
May the force be with you.

all i can say is that you better of used a lot of world builder to make that babilon or im going to really brush up on my RFC skills :p

wait...you're starting with that...thing...owning a city in your core area? good luck with that, you'll need it
seriously, i think the AI will be able to collapse that thing in 20 turns :D then we will see a lot of independent nations expanding! (i hope) all hail the rising empires! :D

This should be fun. So many independents... who will rise out of the dust? Find out in the next episode of... THE AMERICAN DREAM!!! (for RFC)

Pure gaming I'm afraid, 9 1/2 hours all told to create that Babylon! This should be a fun American game, as I can mostly remember where I built all the wonders as Babylon, and I know which production cities to target first. Im going to start my world conquest with precision strikes on these targets, then expand my operations to the rest of the world. Going to have to be quick though! It will be fun to play conquest in the early, middle and late game.

BTW before I start I should let you all know this is my first story here, and some things are going to have to be slowly perfected. For example please let me know what you think of the maps, they are done in homage to DangerBird, but I think there is lots of room for improvement.

So, let the story commence!

The last great Emperor of Babylonia had retreated once again to his monolithic map room, one room among many in his sprawling palace. He pored over the most current maps his servants had prepared for him, and pondered the fate of his Empire. From his observations he could see but one small city that still held out against his authority, one last enemy to be crushed so that he could claim eternal glory.

The last city resisting the might of Babylonia
civ4screenshot0000o.jpg

Yet even as the Emperors troops raced towards this defenceless city the downtrodden masses of the Empire rose up, demanding fair representation and an end to the unlimited power of the dynastic Emperor. However the Emperor was obsessed with the final thought of victory and refused to acknowledge the protestors demands. Seeing they had no chance of victory against the millennia of statedom and bureaucracy that had been built up to protect the status quo, the protestors realised they had to flee this oppressive regime.

So it was with a heavy heart that these reformers abandoned the country of their ancestors and set out across the seas, hoping to find a land that would be tolerant of their new ideals of freedom and democracy. Finally they landed on the east coast of America, and adopted this new continent's name for their fledgling civilisation. They promised themselves they would strive for equality and freedom, and no man would reign absolute above another. This is the story of their American Dream!

Through discord and confusion there seemed to be no-one in control of this fledgling nation, and the first city was founded immediately at the site of the first landings.

The only thing that could be agreed upon was the civil makeup of this new country. All citizens would have equal rights and opportunities for political action. However the country should always come first and therefore it was agreed a great sense of nationalism should be instilled in the populace. In accordance with this "America first" doctrine, the state reserved the right to dictate professions to the new immigrants, sending merchants, scientists and artists to wherever they would be needed. To nurture the great people that would drive America forward Pacifism was adopted in the one Christian city of Wahington, while a Commonwealth was declared for this new continent. Desiring just to be left alone the founders also decided to restrict trade with the outside world. However the strain of working out these directions of the new nation collapsed America into anarchy for twelve long years.

Seeing the progress this new nation was making towards liberty and freedom the local colonies, settlements from the various countries of the mighty Bablyonian Empire, decided to throw their lot in with the Americans. To the north the Babylonian city of Philladephia became the second city of this young nation, while to the south the German colony of Ebenezer also joined forces to help form the New American States.

Through fresh diplomatic contacts it was learnt that at the same time as the Americans asserted their new-found independence similiar winds of change were blowing through the world. The old and mighty Empires of France and Ethiopia, as well as the Kingdom of Portugal all declared independence from the mastery of Babylon. Thankfully for the world the more-cautious advisers in the Babylonian court prevented any military response to this wave of liberation, and these nations and cities where allowed to go free.

Through these diplomatic contacts the American Gibbon was able to compile an analysis of the military might of these various nations. The diplomatic corp responded by forming a defencive pact with the most powerful upsurper to Babylonian supremacy, France.

The democratic direction that America was taking allowed complete control over the allocation of resourses. In the capital Washington surplus treasury gold was poured into the construction of a courthouse and a jail, opening up a new option in the diplomatic arsenal, espionage. The speedy allocation of many spy specialists looked set to attract many great spies to the American pacifistic cause, while their output was directed towards the most technological nation, Canada.

The growing importance of this fledgling nation was underscored by an invitation to the a newly-formed international congress, where whole provinces were to be bargained and traded.

i love congress. it gives me pics to post

Don't worry, it has a time to the game to search for unstable nations, and from what we could see Babylon is of course the one that's going to collapse :D

To the west lay vast open plains. The free people of America wasted no time in migrating west, settling three major new cities. Chicago, Santa Fe and Grand Forks were destined to become bastions of this libertarian land.

In the coming years the international congress of Madrid took place, allowing a great intermingling of the cultures of the world. These nations were benevolent to the newcomers America, and granted them the French city of Port-Royal.

The Babylonian Emperor was still fixated on the city that outfaced him decades ago, however he failed to gain control through the congress.

The newest addition to the New American States was an isolated trading post surrounded by the nearby French province of Canada. An influx of artists over the next few years allowed the city to take control of land routes south towards the east coast cities, and safeguard the nearby supplies of furs. As the American culture grew the decision was taken to do away with the old monarchistic name, and now to know the city as Portland.

Over the next few years the open plains of the west were overrun by a swarm of American workers, each doing their bit to improve their nation. The cities of the plains later prepared recruiting grounds, in accordance with the national plan of defence.

Warned by the diplomats that contact was being lost with faraway nations, expeditions were sent out to re-establish relations with the Ethiopian peoples. When they were located it was established that they shared a defensive pact with Portugal. As America had managed to attach itself to the Franco-Babylonian alliance, it was understood that any attack on America would lead to massive retaliation by these two behemoths.

All that remained was to engineer such an attack...

This new-found military cooperation with Babylon, France and their vassal states opened the doors to warmer diplomatic ties. Free rites of passage was granted from Canada in the north to Louisiana and Texas in the south, and the allies plotted their attacks on the Portuguese colonies. There were even reports of inter-carribiean conflict.

Yay Chicago!! :D

btw, these two cities you settled in the great plains...why didn't you settled the one in the hill between the gold and the marble? (Denver if i remember correcly)
It is one of the best cities you can get here, and it can work many of these resources in the area, while you would be able to settle a city in the mexican border and another one in the canada to work the resources Denver can't. :p
anyway, will you try to make Babylon collapse with wars?

Nice beginning. That Babylon is a behemoth indeed.

Don't dismiss the AI too readily, if you look at the scores they're back up to stable...

I chose these two cities because they can share the food between them, helping me manage them and not waste any resources in these early turns. If I was going for a different victory I would have built Denver on the oil and my favourite American city Wichita (on the horse) which would have given me a city with massive population and another with massive production.

However in this game I have no need for mega production as military units will take precedence. Therefore its better to have a few good production centres than some specialised cities, only one with mega production. Regarding Texas, any city I build must be by a river and preferably coast, 1N of the spices will fit neatly against Santa Fe's culture. All my cities (except Washington and Ebenezer, stupid AI) are built on rivers so when I steal Steam Power theres going to be lots of levee building.

Regarding conquests, I'm tempted to attack Brasil and make a base there. My medium-term objectives will be Iraq, Iran and China (hopefully before the 21st century) as these are where I built all the wonders. Constantinopolis is the holy city and would be useful, but its a bit difficult to defend.

BTW any opinions about all the Spanish city names that will start popping up? Seems a bit strange considering I wiped out the Spanish about 800 years ago. There are some Portuguese settlements in Mexico, any ideas for Portuguese translations of Santa Fe or the soon-to-be Los Angeles?

Portuguese translations :
Santa Fe = Santa Fé

Los Angeles could be "Os Anjos"
but Os Anjos sound dumb, i would suggest something else related to Angels or something like that (to fit with the spanish name)
