My latest game, Continent Plus, Marathon. As you can see in the screenshots, there's only one turn left to UN vote. I own most of my continent (I'm playing as Spain) and so do the Aztecs (We both are the world's superpowers). As an AI who tries to win Aztecs are Hostile to me because (2nd screenshot):
  • They believe you are trying to win the game in a similar manner to them, and they don't like it!
  • You are competing for the favor of the same City-States!

And what's doing this AI regarding this: NOTHING!. :(

They have 67510 gold and I 37497. Well, it's true that I've own the SP Patronage tree but at least they should try to stop me from winning. Maybe this aggresive AI doesn't know how to invade my continent due to current combat AI state, but they should have a 'B' plan!.

I'll be very happy the day a wealthy AI spends all of its money trying to win a UN victory. Hope one day the phantom of the future techs this "Scrooge AI" how to win in future games

I've also attached the savegame. You can even do the same test I did: give all your money to the AI. And guess what will happen: NOTHING!

EDIT: Removed the savegame because the bug has been fixed in G&K.

Yes, the AI needs to do a lot more to get hold of city-states.

In order to stop you from winning, every other civ should conquer its nearby city states - which would make diplo victory impossible.

This winning condition makes no sense anyway.

The day they make the AI start spending it's money on CS on Deity is the time I stop playing with CS on(and as such will never use the patronage policy tree). On Deity you stand absolutely no chance at ever having any favor with any CS if they made a more aggressive spending trait for the A.I.s. Even more narrowing of playstyles isn't a step in the right direction, IMHO.

I agree with you that AI Gold needs to be managed more properly. Either decrease it so that they don't have insane amount of it, or spend it on something like units or rush buildings or CS. In one of my games I attacked an AI with 30k gold..He started losing and later when I offered peace he gave me everything !
I purchased 20 nukes and destroyed everyone else.

Maybe its called Deity for a reason. I think it is hilarious all the people who play deity but then complain when things are hard. If you want an AI with more reasonable gold and happiness levels play Emperor, that is why its there.

The developers definitely intended the AI's to not abuse their massive gold, or every game would end in Diplo.

Well if the developers intended them not to abuse it (which makes sense), why not adjust the amount of gold they receive, so that it seems a bit more likable. I have also had games where the AI sits on tons of gold (30k+) and my army just crushes them and they dont buy anything with it.
They just need to re-adjust the values I think.

Bad'n'wrong. How about they instead make the AI work properly at lower levels and you can give up playing the ridiculous Deity 'skill' level that creates an experience nothing like how the game is supposed to play. Hey, if they made the AI smarter with city-states, perhaps it would be more challenging at Immortal!

Bad'n'wrong. The developers created a fail AI that doesn't understand diplomacy and is incapable of detecting when it might be a pretty darn good time to start buying up city-states to prevent enemy UN victory. The problem exists on all skill levels and has nothing to do with trying to make the player stand a chance at Deity.

Well if the developers intended them not to abuse it (which makes sense)

Bad'n'wrong. Sense =/= nonsense.

Having the AI purchase as much influence as it is capable once the UN is built seems like a pretty simple routine to build. I've seen Oda do this to me on Deity. I was playing duel and one city challenge. He was incredibly friendly to me the whole game, and then it was all over, very quickly.

It seems this AI behaviour has been tweaked in G&K :goodjob:. Now the AI spends its money to try to stop an easy diplomatic victory.

I've attached a savegame. In this game I've just built the United Nations wonder. You can see in the attached image that England uses her money to bribe several CS and other Civs with few money perform coups in my allied CS.

EDIT: Removed the savegame because I'm near my quota limit.
