Please confirm if this is a 'feature' or a 'bug'

Example Scenario:
  • I have an allied City State (Edinburgh) and also a a defensive alliance with Catherine
  • A third party , Haiwatha, is at war with Catherine.
  • Haiwatha dumps gold to buy my ally Edinburgh and supercedes my influence.
  • Edinburgh declares war on Catherine as an ally of Haiwatha

I am forced to go to war with my ally. I can declare peace immediately after, but I lose all my influence and have to rebuy it on a war footing.

This seems like a bug to me. It is my understanding defensive ally doesn't trigger against a third party if you sign it while a war is already active. It should apply to city states also. As the war between Catherine and Haiwatha is ongoing and won't trigger my defensive alliance.

Instead the game treat the CS dow as a new declaration. This severely gimps City State play and Defensive alliance if it is left in as the player is forced to play the lottery.

I only have an autosave somewhere before this happened, may take a few turns to get to it.

This seems like a feature to me. A defensive pact takes effect when one party declares war on your ally. Since the CS declared war on Catherine, the defensive pact demands that you declare war on this new enemy.
