Great wall wonder not working?

Hello all, I've been lurking for a bit but decided it was time to register and start posting finally.

In my most recent game and first attempt at emperor level, I took the capital of Persia in which Darius had built the great wall wonder.

The problem is that it doesn't seem to be producing the effect that it is supposed to. Enemy troops are still moving about at 2 moves over grassland etc within my borders. Shouldn't they be moving at 1 instead? I am certain I've seen the reverse effect before on my own troops in other games when venturing into opposing territory with the GW (but didn't notice when I took his city because it was all trees and roads leading into it).

Never mind the fact that the wall graphic itself is messed up and won't fully surround my borders even after re-loading - I have read previous posts after searching for topics similar that this won't affect the result of the wonder anyway.

What gives? My great wall ain't so great!

What time period is it? Doesn't the great wall expire with cannons, rifling, or something in that era?

Also, the great wall doesn't ever expand with your borders. Just stays where it was originally built.

EDIT: and welcome to the forums!

Is it Darius' troops? He could be in a golden age, where his UA gives his troops one extra movement point

Welcome :)

:ninja: If Darius is in a golden age, he gets an extra move for each unit (and the GAs last longer).

Also, once your civ discovers dynamite, it is obsoleted.

I am in the industrial era. So I suppose that's it. It was Arab troops, so it wasn't Darius' very own at least.

Could have sworn that the troops were moving more though even during earlier times. Must have just been my imagination though!

Thanks for the welcomes too! :)

By the way, note that the Great Wall's movement capabilities expire when its owner discovers dynamite. I thought that was odd. I assume France's UA works the same way (+2 Culture/city bonus before Steam Power).

Now that I think about the progression of events, I made a beeline for dynamite in my tech. pursuit and probably never really had the chance to fully recognize the benefits of the wall.

Thanks again to all.

can anyone confirm the wall only relates to borders when it is built>? i think this is wrong and works in all borders, even a new city made on an island...

You're right: the wall's effects affect enemy units entering any tile within your borders. The previous poster was talking about the actual wall (the UI representation of the Wonder), which doesn't update every turn as your borders grow.

the wall's graphic does not expand each and every time your borders expand. the closest I can find (and this is not 100%) is that the wall's graphic tends to move around the era changes. Usually about 2 turns later. I have not seen it change after I researched dynamite.

The most the wall's graphic will expand out to is 5 tiles from the city it was built in regardless of how large your borders are.
