IOT: Land Ho!
Planting-the-Flag-landing_columbus.jpg

Welcome to Linkman226's first IOT :D!

As you read this, please listen to this. Thank you :)

This Imperium Offtopicum starts in the year 1485, not far from Columbus's "discovery" of the Americas. There are a few quirks, of course ;). You will start in the Old World, specifically in Europe, West Asia, or North Africa, but later on you will have the potential to expand across the world, where you will find various NPC's and unoccupied land ripe for the conquering.

Spoiler Rules :

Basic Stuff

If you're malicious, rude, etc. you will be expelled and I won't be afraid to report you to the mods. Use some common sense, and follow the rules of the IOT, OT, and CFC forums, please. I reserve the right to veto any action.

There are two maps in this IOT, the Old World map and the whole world map (not really the whole world, but all the relevant parts for this IOT).

Lastly, put all orders in red.

Joining
You may start ONLY as a nation in the Old World. This is defined by the Old World Map further down. The exception is if you join the game after at least three nations have reached the New World (detailed later), in which case you can take over an NPC anywhere in the real Old World, rather than just in the Old World in the map below.

When you join, post:

A map with the 30 territories you are claiming
Name
Flag
Type of Government and Economic System- be realistic about this, the year is 1485
Capital
Religion
History
One Strength
One Flaw

The last two are also very important- they help give you the special advantage and special weakness I confer upon you.

Expansion

Each territory you have gives you one expansion point, EP.

Peaceful
Before the first phase, I will give everyone a decent number of extra territories to begin with. The quantity and location depend on your roleplay (better RP, more territories), but everyone's will be relatively balanced. Then I'll place some NPC's on the map.

After that claiming is allowed of unoccupied territories within the Old World.

Which is when you'll realize there are none :p (except, perhaps, for some parts of Africa and the eastern reaches of the Old World map)

In order to expand, you'll probably need to move to foreign continents.

Different areas of the world require different "projects" to expand into. This sends out some intrepid explorer to find some foreign land. The three projects:

Spoiler Projects :

All of these require a navy

American Expedition- allows colonization of Americas; requires you to be on the Atlantic Ocean or control Gibraltar- 20 EP

Asian Expedition- allows colonization of Asia east of Iran- 50 EP- requires you to border the eastern edge of the Old World map or have access to the Atlantic Ocean

Subharan Expedition- allows colonization of all Africa- 80 EP- requires Atlantic Ocean access

Exploration- Each twenty EP's invested nets one extra white province you can claim per turn

White territories can be claimed for 1 EP a piece. Without any EP investment in exploration, you an claim up to three provinces a turn. As explained above, however, exploration increases this.

Agressive

You can also attack countries, NPC or human. First, you must declare war on them, either secretly or in public. If you DoW secretly, there is a 25% chance of success adjusted by the quality of roleplay material you provide. If you are caught, you get no bonus, but if you are not, you get a bonus in attacking the first turn.

Attacks are done by via random number generator comparing armies or navies, whichever are attacking.

Uses of EP's Other than Expansion

Armies and Navies

Each army and each navy cost 1 EP.

Armies allow you to attack territories contiguous with your land. A navy can attack any coastal territory provided it can move there (not blocked by someone's control of a strait- explained later). A navy can also transport an army, thereby allowing that army to attack non-contiguous but coastal territories.

Straits

Control of the following straights grants a person the ability to deny access through them by controlling them:

The Dardanelles, the Bosporus, Gibraltar, Copenhagen/Malmo, Sinai, Djibouti/ Bab-el-Mandeb, Hormuz.

Control is defined as possessing both territories on either side and having a navy, or possessing one side but having a navy at least twice the size of the person on the other side.

Infrastructure

You may build infrastructure in your territories. It costs 5 EP's per piece, but gives an extra EP per turn.

Trade

Every single trade agreement you have nets you 1 EP per turn

Rebellion! And other random events

Various random events can happen to your country depending on the state of world affairs, your roleplays, and other people's roleplays.

Of particular interest is the rebellion. Any province not controlled by you at the beginning of turn 1 has the potential to rebel. There is a base 5% chance per turn of rebellion, but that is modified by other factors. The chances of rebellion are decreased by:

  • Keeping territories close to and connected to your capital (if it's more than 20 territories away or across the ocean, +10 percentage points)
  • Building infrastructure (Each infra decreased probability by 1 percentage point)
  • Having a strong army (Formula: ((army+navy)/Provinces/100 * .5) is how many percentage points the rebellion rate is decreased by.
  • Winning wars (Each capital controlled other than your own decreases the probability by five percentage points)
  • Being at peace (War increases it by 10 percentage points)
  • Having certain powers or not having certain weaknesses.
  • Wrting good roleplays (depends on quality)

When a territory rebels, an NPC forms and takes it over, but the person from whom it rebels has that one opportunity to swtich to that new nation. I will also role to see if neighboring provinces join the rebelling province, with a base chance of 20%, modified by the factors above.

NPC Actions

There are various actions you can perform with NPC's:

Form Protectorate-You control the country's diplomacy and movement of armies and navies. half of its EP's are transferred to you per turn. Costs two EP per territory controlled by the NPC.

Annex- The NPC is absorbed into your nation. Costs four EP per territory controlled by the NPC.

Lastly, you can perform all actions you could with any regular player.

Type of Government and Economic System: A union of Merchant Republics.
Capital: Naples

History: The Union was born out of a alliance between the Grand Republic of Venice, and the Kingdom of Sicily to protect the trade in the Mediterranean Sea from outside assaults. as the trade began to expand into new areas, so did the Union. When the Byzantines fell, they acted quickly to get Athens and southern Greece, and fought the Ottomans for the territory. It has since established a powerful state in the Mediterranean. It has sent offers the various trade centers in Europe for membership, ad if they decide to join, they still retain their independence like all nations in the Union.

Oh boy. I think you just caused great pain to Christos, if he intends to join

I also like how you're "Easter Orthodox"

You're referring to how each territory doesn't fill in 100%, right? This is because its .png. I use the program Paint.net so this isn't a problem but I can understand that it might be an issue if you still use the regular, primitive paint program.

Will fix.

No, no, "easter", as in the event. Easter Orthodoxy sounds like a very fun religion:

2) I am the Lord thy Bunny, and I am a jealous Bunny....

Name: Holy See

Type of Government: Catholic Theocracy
Economic System: Basic Market Economy
Capital: Vatican City
Religion: Catholicism
History: Following Pope Urban II’s death shortly after the end of the first crusade, a New Pope, Pope Felix V, took up the Papacy, winning out over his main rival, Ranierius. Once Pope, he centralized the Papal States, integrating the entire government into the Catholic Church. Extremely zealous & charismatic, Pope Felix V then led an army of Crusaders, tens of thousands strong, to recapture the Holy Land in the Second Crusade. He succeeded beyond his wildest dreams, and after nearly 3 years of Bloody fighting, all of Israel & Palestine was under his direct control. But in his age, he worried that his successors might lose the Holy Land, and so implemented a policy of only allowing those with military training to become Pope. Shortly after Pope Felix V was succeeded by Pope Cornelius II, several Christian Kingdoms in Iberia requested his assistance in la Reconquista. Taking control of an army of Castilian, Aragonese, & Navarrese soldiers, he defeated Muhammad an-Nasir of the Almohads in the pivotal battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. Pope Cornelius II then annexed all Almohad holdings in Iberia & a portion of their North African provinces, before a Muslim Revolt in Jerusalem forced him to abandon his conquests. He was successful in putting down the rebellion, & established military bases & missions throughout the Holy Land to prevent such an occurrence form happening again. By now, the Holy See was an empire in all but name. Over the centuries, Papal influence led to Sardinia, Corsica, & several other Islands of the Mediterranean becoming territories of the Holy See. Now, with the dawn of the 16th Century less than 20 years away, the current Pope, Pope Miltiades IV, has launched expeditions into Egypt. He is motivated by a dream in which God commanded him to take the Jewel of the Nile for the Catholic Church, and if fortune continues to favor the armies of the Holy See, the chances of him failing to complete this Divine Mandate are slim to none.
One Strength: Most Citizens & Soldiers are filled with Religious Fervor
One Flaw: Heresy is not tolerated

Someone take that last part of Ireland and there will be hell to pay.:borg:

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
Flag
Spoiler :
Flag_of_the_United_Kingdom.svg

Type of Government and Economic System
The Kingdom once had a feudal Monarchy until the revolution, where a group of politicians convinced both the peasants that a more Democratic system was in order. The King was overthrown, and the politicians who led the rebellion held votes for a parliament. This formed the Constitutional Monarchy put in place today. Despite this, the Manorial system still had a firm grasp in the society, but more and more the UK is growing favorable of a basic market economy.
Capital
The capital of the prime ancestor of the United Kingdom was always London. It is the center of British trade and culture, it is by far the largest city in British borders.
Religion
Roman Catholicism replaced the early pagan religions in England during Roman rule. When England expanded its borders, Catholicism followed.
History
The main ancestor of the United Kingdom was the Kingdom of England. Founded by a Anglo-Saxon group who started practicing Feudalism, England quickly expanded from it's home city London to the modern southern part of Britain. They used diplomatic and war skills to eventually expand further north, spreading their new religion Catholicism along the way. As they finally ruled the entire British Isles, the realized a strong fleet will decide it's survival, not a particularly strong army. Their naval training and engineering is unmatched, it has been refined many times even before the expansion into Ireland. Speaking of which, Ireland is a rather young expansion of the Kingdom. It was at first just a designated area under British occupation, but eventually became an important part of the Kingdom. So much that its name got into the final title of the finalized Kingdom: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
Strength
The Kingdom was always in need of the largest and most powerful navy possible. Being an Island-state, they had no choice but to destroy enemy ships before they so much as hit see London.(Naval supremacy)
Flaw
Even though Catholicism was close in the British home, the population started to become wary of Catholicism. They always thought reform was necessary.(Challenges Catholicism)

The Benevolent Republic of Holy Llanfar
"Friendship Is Magic"
llanfar.png

Type of Government and Economic System: Religious, monastic, system of distributing weath through the church. The entire economy is Church owned. The country is ruled by a council of religious elders that meet in Llanfar city on the Kanin Peninsular. The group are known as the Kanin Consistorial council and are the governing body.
Capital: Llanfar city on the Kanin Peninsula
Religion: Llanfar is a theocracy that follows the guidance of the Almighty Turtle god of Llanfar and its two Lieutenants; Luna and Celestia. The worship and preaching is based around concepts of friendship and tolerance leading to the army's famous war cry "I'm Gonna Love and Tolerate the *Ahem* out of you!". There is very little that goes on outside of the Church's watchful gaze. And all property is owned by them - Even the food on your plate is owned by the state church!
There is however a schism running through the religion of the two main orders. Both occupy equal number of places on the Kanin Consistorial Council and so neither can ever have an advantage. The First faction is called the Harmonious Crusaders and they represent the Lieutenant Celestia whereas the other faction, The Peoples of the Longest Day of the Thousandth Year, represent the following of Luna.
There are multiple other factions that have gained power throughout the centuries. For example During the crisis of 145AD the Discord faction came into power and it was not until much later did the Crusaders and the Peoples put aside their differences to take down the Discord regime.
During the 1204 consistorial war the Derpy Hooves Faction rose to power and the nation was plunged into anarchy for the next 100 years.
The problem of who will be elected Grand Cardinal is a troublesome one, yet in recent years the problem was solved by making the Grand Cardinal a representative of the neutral faction called The Followers of the Great and Powerful Trixie (Trixie being a minor demigod famous for ridding the land of the much feared Ursa Major) so as to eliminate bias.
The Current Consistorial proportional elector votes are:

18 Harmonious Crusaders
18 The Peoples of the Longest Day of the Thousandth Year
2 Discord
1 Derpy Hooves
1 Monks of the order of St. Dash
1 The Knights of St. Sparkle

History:
The Llanfarian religion dates back to around 1200BC. Although as you will see this date was re-estimated later to be actually 1224BC. At this time a great war was taking place over the heavens between the Turtle God's Two lieutenants; The Moon and Sun demigods. It is said that the Sun god - Celestia used six stones of power to banish the moon god - Luna to the moon for all eternity. However as this happened a prophet learned of something that Celestia did not know. He became known as St. Sakharov the Prophet and this was his most famous prophesy - the one of eternal night. He prophesied that on the longest day of the thousandth year the stars would aid in the escape of Luna.
It is from this prophesy that we can also find the sole clue to what may have caused the heavenly battle; It was said that on returning Luna would make the people look up to the sky at night and to wonder and dream, to aspire and be brave. It said that all of humanity would begin to apriciate night the way it was meant to be.

Llanfar city was founded around 600BC under the guidance of religious visionaries who saw visions of a better, more equal and fair, future from the great creator god - The Holy Turtle of Llanfar (Also known as the Loren Fhowst Turtle). They named their city after their god and tried to form a society in mirror of that which The Holy Turtle had shown them. The settlement grew very slowly; hardly any people lived in the harsh wilderness of the Kanin Peninsula and crops did not grow well. However the settlement grew into a small town.

Then in 224BC The prophet St. Sparkle revived a message from the Holy Turtle. The vision showed her of 6 stones of power - The Elements of Harmony. These magical stones were hidden from the world and it was shown that only those who could truly embrace the magic of friendship would be able to wield them. And so, St. Twilight Sparkle set out to find these stones of power. She called it her crusade and set off to search the world. Nothing was heard of her for another 200 years.

In 24BC Llanfar was growing into a powerful city with various other settlements growing up around it. The cathedrals were rich and held great treasures but then one of the oldest prophesies suddenly came to realization...
From their sanctuaries in the hills came the secretive and relatively tiny order known as the Peoples of the Longest Day of the Thousandth Year. The other Llanfarians were rather scared of the dark and mysterious Monks. Then the prophets of the consistorial council began to receive visions of another heavenly war. The Monks said that this was what they had warned of and chaos began to engulf Llanfar. However just when it was looking at its worst St. Sparkle returned from her crusade bearing with her the 6 stones of power. Using them she went to the high cathedral right on the tip of the peninsula and fought in a divine duel with Luna until she managed to lock her away for all eternity... Well, that was the plan...

After the battle St. Sparkle and the Elements were blown out across the lands and her cult of following re-branded itself as the Harmonious Crusaders with the intent of recovering the Elements and the Saint herself. As the years went on the Crusaders became a massive political power to be reckoned with.

Then in 145AD a new power arose in the heavens named Discord. This god attracted a lot of earthy followers and so civil war broke out in Llanfar. The Crusaders (now leaders of Llanfar) fought angainst Discord's minions and the war lasted for well over a century before Celestia realized she could not beat the god alone and so ended Luna's banishment from the moon and called her to help in the heavenly battle. In its earthly equivalent Luna's followers - The Peoples of the Longest Day of the Thousandth year - joined the fight against discord. Although they were pacifists they greatly aided the war effort. Eventually Discord was banished to a tomb of stone. However Celestia quickly banished Luna back to her prison. On the earth the Crusaders tried to do the same to the Peoples but the Peoples had become such an integral part of Llanfarian society during the Discord war that they forced the crusaders to allow them to stay. Over the centuries the Monastic order would come to rival the Crusaders in political power and became adept in the art of subterfuge and quickly began to dominate politically and if it wasn't for the Crusader's military might it is speculated that the Monks would have taken over all of Llanfar.

The city continued to grow and the Crusaders continued to expand its borders - Reaching as far as the Yamal Peninsula and many civil wars happened as the years went on usually between the crusaders and a coalition of the Peoples and allies such as the Derpy Hooves faction. The reason for these wars was often ether the Crusader's trying to banish the Peoples back to their secluded monasteries or seeing who would be the next Grand Cardinal. The latter kind, Known as The Consistorial Succession Wars were so common that eventually all of the groups decided that one faction should be appointed impartial and skilled enough to always have the role of Grand Cardinal. this was decided after countless decades of debate the Followers of the Great and Powerful Trixie were chosen as it was often proved that anything anyone else could do, they could do better.

The Teutonic Order was founded in 1190 during the siege of Acre, when a hospital brotherhood was established to care for the many sick German crusaders. It was given a building after the conquest of the city, and in 1198 was turned into a military-monastic order on the model of the Hospitallers of Saint John and the Templars. This creation reflected the growing involvement of the Hohenstaufen dynasty in the Holy Land.

From the start, the order started a policy of conquering land and building up independent territory: in the Holy Land, in Hungary in 1211-25, and later in Prussia, after it absorbed the Sword-Brethren in Livonia. It was in Prussia that the order fought with the Polish dukes of Masovia and Silesia to subjugate the pagan Prussians and fight against Novgorod. After the fall of Acre in 1291 the Grand Master went to Venice, and, following the conquest of Pomerelia in 1309, to Marienburg in Prussia. Thus the Order, by now exclusively nobiliary, came to form an independent political entity. In 1243, Pope Innocent IV had placed the Order's possessions in the Pope's domain, but in practice the Order was completely independent.
