here's how much money you can save (or lose) by rush buying a prior unit and upgrading it vs rush buying the upgrade directly.
for most units it's significantly cheaper to do this. for example a warrior costs 200, and 80 gold to upgrade, vs the 390 required to rush buy swordsmen directly, saving 110 gold.
the exceptions are swordsmen, horsemen, catapults, frigates, and caravels. their respective upgrades should be bought directly. in the case of knights, a knight directly costs 460 gold, a chariot archer + upgrade costs 385, a horseman + upgrade costs 490.
this is standard speed, no modifiers to rush buying costs or upgrading costs... quick speed is similar but shifts things more in favor of upgrading, marathon shifts things more toward rush buying the upgrade directly, though things are generally in about the same places. marathon skews things to relatively cheaper as their cost raises, like you lose 420 gold rush buying caravel and upgrading to destroyer vs buying destroyer directly, compared to gaining 10 gold on quick speed.
