THE NEW MAFIA HOSTING QUEUE!

This is a place where the queue for the Mafia games is kept. You can discuss pretty much whatever you want, but please don't get too spammy. And the Mafia Discussion and Information thread would probably be more appropriate.

The list of games that are in play and accepting sign-ups is kept here.

The queue is located in Post #2.

Please read posts 1, 3 and 4 of this thread before requesting to host a game.

Too many games at once results in several negatives, such as:

  • games not getting the required amount of sign ups
  • overwhelmed players
  • problems with activity
  • mafia burnout
  • etc.
Keep in mind when hosting a game that there many of the players on this site play Night of the Werewolf and games on other sites - so be patient with the timing of your game to ensure that there are players willing to play who have enough time to do so. With that in mind, the limits on games are as follows:

Mini Games
3 - 10 players
Unlimited

Small Games
11 - 20 players
1 at a time

Large Games
21 or more players
1 at a time.

(There may be special instances where more than one small game, or more than one large game, are allowed to run at the same time. The vast majority of the time however, only one of each.)

Sign-ups for your game should be opened once the current game is starting to wind down, or halfway through at the very least.

The Queues

Large Game Queue

  • The queue is organized in a "first come, first serve" manner for hosting spots.
  • A person can have a maximum of two games on the queue, with at least five people between each game.
  • The queue goes down in a strict list.
  • The person on top of the queue has the first right to open sign-ups, then the second, third, etc. (If it is the time for a large game to open sign-ups, the first game on the queue will have the first choice. They can choose to either open sign-ups, pass to the second person, or go to the bottom of the queue. If the first passes, those three choices go to the second person, and so on.)
  • If a game fails to start within two weeks after the previous game ends, it will be moved to the bottom of the queue.
  • If you would like, you are allowed to reserve a spot in any number of upcoming games (listed below), and you will have a guaranteed spot in the game when it opens sign-ups (you are not, however, obligated to sign-up for that game). *Note that this is up to the host's discretion. Contact the host of the game you wish to reserve for. They have the right to refuse your reservation, or to make a reservation work differently than the way it is listed here.
  • Once the current game gets down to 1/3 of the original players still living, the next game on the queue can (and is expected to) start sign-ups.

GMing Tips and Advice

Balance

Askthepizzaguy has written a couple essays on balance in the Mafia Information thread. They start here (posts 401 and 405).

You can always PM your game's setup to an experienced host to check if it is balanced or not.

Feel free to send your setup to any of the following people to get it checked for balance:
  • Zack
  • autolycus
  • askthepizzaguy

Role Randomization

People use their own methods, but I have one that is both easy to learn and easy to perform - quick, too. To start us off on that journey, I have gone to the liberty of creating a Google Doc. Copy it into your own spreadsheet to practice with. Follow these instructions, and you'll be good to go:
  • Fill in Column A with names of the CFC players (In this example: A, B, C, D, E, F)
  • Fill in Column B with the character roles (In this example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
  • Fill in Column C with (this exactly, without the quotes) "=RAND()"
  • Copy and paste "=RAND()" into however many rows you need (In this example: Rows 2-7)
  • Highlight Columns B and C
  • Click Tools -> Sort... (This is on the toolbar across the top)
  • Check the box that says "Data has header row"
  • Sort by Column C; A-> Z
  • Click Sort
Behold the randomization!

BB code

Just use it. Please. It makes a huge difference. Embrace the BBcode! A very detailed table of CFC BB code is located here.

Under construction: Creating a ruleset, thinking of abilities, advertising your game, and more.

Okay, I've done it. If I've made any mistakes, please notify me.

I know I've just copy/pasted Zack's queue here and I will change things ASAP. I'll also get a mod to sticky this.

Also, please tell me if you can think of any improvements to the queue and I will take them into consideration.

:D

Nice thread. :goodjob:

I don't have any games to add, but I would like to request that TF2 Mafia and Bloodlust trade places in the queue. I've talked with kill fire about this, and the current schedule would have TF2 Mafia happen likely in August-September 2012. We just want to move it back a couple of months because it will be far easier for us to co-host it if we're still living in the same house, and while I might not still be living here in September, I'll probably still be living here in June-July.

This won't affect anyone else's game but our own.

Damn, I just realized that my mafia was opening soon before we changed stuff up. Please change mine to TBA Story by Skwink

Done.

Also, VMs are going out to people about their next games. I can't contact Takhisis for some reason so that's annoying.

I'm up next, as Ark and Tahk aren't ready to host now. I'll have the game open to signups by Monday.

The Starcraft Mafia game will not be hosted any time soon - move it to the bottom of the queue or take it off, whichever is preferable.

Thanks for doing this! Saves me doing it, I guess :)

To the bottom it hath gone.

I've put Pick Your Poison at the top of the Small Games list as it is a small game. I will forgive Cartharis for jumping the queue, as it was quite chaotic time when he made it, but future violations will not be tolerated and I will call in the Mods.

X-Post with Olaf: No problem.

Like we've ever really held very strictly to the queue anyway...

The reason I 'jumped the queue' was because there had been so many cases of games opening signups and then being called off halfway through that procedure, and people just wanted to play something. I figured, instead of a week or two of wondering which game on the queue should open signups next, something should just be started straight away in order to keep people interested.

Verarde also said he was interested in starting a small game soon, so if he confirms it he should probably go on the queue as well.

To be honest, I don't think small games require a queue. There isn't enough current interest in hosting them to justify that. Also, it means that anyone who is interested in hosting one gets shunted into a slot that might well be six months or so later, and who can blame them if their interest hasn't stood for that long?

The four in the queue currently have, IIRC, been there for ages without ever getting too close to starting. I know I asked Zack to remove the Awesome Reginald one months ago. Earthling's no longer interested in hosting Starcraft. Has CivGeneral been seen around here recently, and is he demonstrably ready to host Fallout, should it be required of him?

As it is, all the small game queue is doing is making it more difficult for the people who actually do have the enthusiasm to host a game to do so.

(This post sounds too harsh. I do appreciate your taking over the thread, NinjaCow - we need enthusiastic people to host stickied threads as well as games :p)

EDIT: oh, whoops, I forgot that we're not supposed to post here unless we've got a game to announce. Umm, could you perhaps take Awesome Reginald off the queue?

My game is ready to go, and I really want to host it now. Can I just go ahead?

I'd say you should wait for Catharsis's game to end, but there's almost no other games happening right now, so you could probably open sign-ups for it fairly soon. Try to time it so that it starts when Catharsis's game is a bit into the game- maybe in a week or two.

Okay...it'll give me some time to fine tune anything I notice, anyway, PMs, rules, backstory, etc.

When about half of the people in Catharsis' game are dead, I'll open my game.

Don't feel bad about your post sounding harsh, my post looks a bit harsh when I look back on it so yeah. :)

I think that there is justification for holding a queue, but maybe I should remove the current small games queue and start afresh (if that's alright with everyone who has a game on the queue, that is). I'll do that sometime within the next week.

Also, I'm thinking of changing that rule to "don't post here unless you want to host a game OR talk about improving the queue".

:D

Oh, by the way, my game is called: The Wild Wild West: A Mafia Game. And I plan on hosting it once Catharsis' game is well underway/near the end.
