Welcome to the TSG26 Game in Progress thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once you've started playing. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. Please remember that we are running a family friendly site, so express anger or frustration with this in mind. :)

Please use this thread to discuss your goals for the game and your opening moves through about the first 60 to 80 turns.

- What were your initial priorities?
- What Social Policies did you choose and why?
- What tech path did you follow?
- Did you prioritize any Wonders?
- How does the smaller map size and quick game speed affect your strategy?

Once you've completed the game, head over to the TSG26 After Action Report thread.

Hi everyone! Long time lurker, first time GOTMer. I've gotten to turn 200 as of now.

- What were your initial priorities?
With this being a small map, I wanted to scout out the surrounding land and get as much control as I could quickly. I also needed to make contacts with the other 5 civs and the CS's too so I could start benefiting from being in relations with them (RA's, bribery, etc)
- What Social Policies did you choose and why?
So far, I have completed Tradition and Patronage, starting now on Rationalism. My thought process was I would go tall empire, and that on a small map it would be more effective than say a large Pangaea map. (I'm regretting going all the way in Patronage now though as my beaker count isn't growing as I want it to be, I overestimated Scholasticism).
- What tech path did you follow?
I've pretty much beelined it to every tech-tree that provided a structure boosting research. I wasn't sure how effective RA's would be in a quick game, so I wanted to be as self-reliant as I could before depending on getting boosts from others.
- Did you prioritize any Wonders?
I managed to get GL out by turn 22, followed later by the old HS-GE-PT combo.
- How does the smaller map size and quick game speed affect your strategy?
Not as much as I thought it would. My playstyle tends to drift towards a peaceful win anyway.

Kudos for the map, it was very interesting trying to scout from the initial spawning point.

I also want to comment that this is probably the most hilarious game I've played so far, in that Monty has suffered a loss of a city, a denouncement, or a DOW probably once every 20 turns.

Settled by the mountain on like turn 3. Popped the ruins by settling. Figure I'll get an observatory there. Want to focus on science early, but make a deep run into the social policies so a fair bit of culture as well.

Built scout>scout>monument>Stonehenge
SP's were Tradition, Liberty, Lib (free settler), Trad (+15% wonders), Lib (free worker), Commerce, Lib (+prod), and Lib (happiness). Will go for Patronage next.
Wonders = Stonehenge, GLib(took compass), and Oracle, all in capitol.
4th city settled just after National College built. Now working on university.

Small map size probably helps me a lot since I rarely explore as well as I should. In fact, I've only met 1 opponent so far, but a lot of CS's. Giving back workers to CS's for friendliness. Lots of barbs to kill. Astro is next tech.

Seems like things are going OK... have to get my GSci's cranking out as soon as this University is built. Rapid expansion now, too, I think. Wish me luck.

Played until turn 103 :

I went Liberty and built 4 cities right away when i saw i was isolated. I started with pottery-calendar and tried the GL in capital but too late, it was built at turn 36 i think and i was at 5 turns from it. Again, this wonder was gone pretty fast in my game. I managed to build Oracle when i reached ren. era at least. I discovered everyone and signed some RAs, allied 4 cs so far thanks to barb's worker steals.

I will not explain everything in details, i started to record a video of me playing. Problem is i have played 2 hours so far and have a huge file of near 2 gigabytes. I'm still a noob in this domain so i don't know how it will end up.

I know how to mix and cut videos but still wondering how to compress everything and send this on youtube(i made an account). I will ''google'' some things in next days i guess.

Alright i figured some important things about video making. I couldn't record with sound until i found a way to bypass that problem. I also found that sending videos on youtube only need to be 360X240 so the file is grantly reduced in term of size. For example, i tried to send my 2 hours video on youtube and found that the file was reduced to only 650 mb. Limit is, i think, 2 gb so you can send a video of approx 7 hours long(looks like Dave's ones!).

So the first 2 hours will be seen without sound at all then there will be sound for the rest of the game. I will probably finish the game this week-end.

My gameplay sucks a bit, i got many bad events through the game....like ally a cs when a barb just stole a worker at 1 turn of completion of a luxury tile...

Played till about 130t

No wars not even to steal worker. Allied few CSs through quests. Threw money at few others to get WLTKD and after discovering everyone signed RAs with all but Monty and Harun. Harun turned hostile the moment I allied a CS on his landmass even though he was not allied with them. Lost a chance to sign medieval RA with him. Since then have been buying all CSs he was allied with.
Monty is on his last legs fighting Liz and ghandi, down to York as his last city. Darius took his cap and other cities and is a runaway over there.

Still developing, wonder spamming in cap, got the usual suspects and MPicchu to boot. First time I built that one. $ is piling in, not sure what finish date to aim at, is it possible in under 200?

Played 1. session untill about turn 100, then quit being tiried of the game not sure if making video worked - at least I tried to.

Settled on hill se - cap on hill +2 hills nearby was all I wanted for early game pretty much.
went full Liberty--> rationalism
Settled 3 more cities fast and gl/nc after - then CI for longer GA and some happy.
rushed PT with Lib GE and build oracle/Hagia and Notre in noncap cities - triing allways to find balance between happy/growing/scientist in cities and enough gold.
rushed astro with GS to find other civs - made RAs with all them

In like turn 100: getting the tech for public schhools, found all civs but now england is unfriendly due to my low military. Struggling a bit to have enough gold to finance RAs and keep CS

Settled my capital north of the mountain on turn 2, and discovered some culture points in ancient ruins on the same turn. Built a monument first and got the liberty settler on turn 11. Founded a second city on the east cost near silk and three fishes.

Built the great library and the oracle in my capital and used the free policy to finish the liberty tree and get a great scientist for instant education. Immedeatly bought a university and filled it with specialists. With +8 great scientist points per turn, I soon had another great scientist for instant astronomy and immedeately bought an observatory as well.

The national college is due in 3 turns and I have a settler waiting to found a third city claiming wine and additional incence.

Seems OK so far. Settled SW on the plains hill for the extra prod and science, but less food. I built a 2nd city east on the coast to get a trireme or two out there, but have only met Harun so far plus city states. Everyone else must be east of me. I have a caravel and embarked units on the way to investigate.

I have great library finished by turn 30, oracle @ 44, NC @ 54, HS @ 70 and PT @ 72 so I am pleased with this progress. Next up is 2 or 3 more settlers to capture the remaining luxuries to sell to the other AI's on the other continent(s). Mainly, I like to keep their cash down to stop them buying up CS's but leaving enough for RA's. Time will tell if I should have settled more cities earlier for the science boost.

SP's have been liberty (all), opened patronage plus whatever that one is top right and opened rationalism.

From here on it is going to be all about raising capital and fulfilling CS requests. Oh, and the small matter of ploughing through the tech tree.

Not sure I understand the question?

We post these games and discussion forums for anyone who wishes to play, share what they find in their game and discuss ways to improve their game. The ultimate goal is improved play for the entire community. :)

Thanks :)
I was wondering if these were for beginners, more experienced players, people that want to show off, people that want to learn, etc.
I guess what you are saying is that they are for all audiences then.
I might give one of these a shot...

Ah, sorry, I understand now.

We are currently running two games per month. One that is in the difficulty level of Warlord through King and the second that is in the difficulty level of Emperor through Deity. If you are learning, we encourage you to try all the games on your own and then read the In-Progress thread and After Action thread to see where you can improve.

While you may only submit your first, unassisted attempt, we do encourage you to replay the game using the knowledge you gain from other players. Some of the videos are excellent resources to help you improve. If you have questions, please post them in the appropriate thread (In-Progress or After Action) and generally other players will be glad to offer tips and advice.

Good Luck. :)

Thank you!
I normally play King, but am working my way up to Emperor.

Turn 80.
Have 4 cities...
cap on east hill.
2nd SE on coast near mountain for obs and picking up the gold.
3rd NE for dye (bit crappy - not much prod)
4th North river - put this here for the jungles and an obs.
Not sure about positions for 3 and 4.

GLib, HS, PT start. Popped astronomy with PT scientist and exploring with my units.
2 out of 3 citites have universities. other 2 working on it.

have just signed 1 RA with monty; short of cash now - not sure how to get further agreements set up.

Just started into rationalism.
Tyre only ally at the mo.

leif - i had a bit of a cock up and had to reload. Pressed f12 for a screnshot then pressed shift-tab to go to community overlay... for some reason it quick-loaded an indian game I have so I lost my game. No idea why. anyway, rolled back from turn 48 to last auto save which was turn 40. i did the same steps from there.

edit - and submit. :)

It is turn 65, and the Hagia Sophia in New York just gave us our first Great Scientist. We could bulb for Astronomy next turn, but we'll probably research that by hand as it'll still arrive in time to choose Renaissance as our next social policy.

We have five cities: four on our continent, and one on the Silver near Arabia. That made them hostile, but for now the local barbarian activity prevents any thoughts of war. So, for the moment, our military consists of the original Warrior who, with the assistance of a Scout, was brave enough to deal with all camps on our own patch.

I'm not sure what is optimal in this setting - ordinarily it's either 4 cities or 7+, but there doesn't seem time for another overseas city to develop properly. The Silver city has the advantage of lots of production, and hopefully some strategic resource will pop up later in all those hills. Also, this looks like a nice environment to test the abilities of the Minuteman. :mischief:

We resisted the temptation of that ruins and the mountain next to it, and settled the capital on the hill southeast of the starting tile. Both hammers and food are readily available, which beats the possibility of building an Observatory. This choice was rewarded with access to stone, two tiles that we bought - with the reduced price for being America - as soon as we could.

In fact our Warrior popped another ruins first, as it circled Washington, which brought us the wonderful gift of an early 13 culture on turn 3 (thereby missing the survivors that could be claimed on turn 1 from the initial ruins, as some testing showed later). The other ruins - we found 6 in total, 2 of them off-continent - gave us gold, Calendar (nicely timed but not really needed, science goes way faster than a builder can keep up with on Prince), more culture (by then insignificant), and survivors for Boston.

We made good profit form the early culture boost by settling New York on turn 11, south of Washington on a river hill, working the Gold. New York has limited growth potential but it will have an Observatory. Boston (north on the coast) and Philadelphia (on the Silk to the east, with 3 fish) followed quickly, and then we built another Settler for Philadelphia on the Silver. It would have been nice to have a city over at the Krakatoa, but other than the 5 science points it would have virtually nothing.

We're doing well in the wonder department. Missed Stonehenge, but a monastery in Washington is nearly as good. Once the Pyramids were completed, the backlog in groundwork soon emptied. And New York's Hagia Sophia was finished on the same turn as the University in Washington.

Happiness is a big issue though. We rushed Notre Dame with a Great Engineer from the Liberty Tree, but within a few turns those extra 10 happy faces are already melting away.

Besides Arabia, our exploring Workboat met a lot of City States, but no other AI. We seem to cover a lot of space between the two of us. The remaining four rivals must have had a rawer deal.

Soon, we'll see! :)

A funny thing happened when our Scout (with the scouting1 promotion) returned to shore after plunging into the eastern waters. In the water, it could not see any further than on land, but back on the beach it was suddenly able to detect the Great Barrier Reef.
