Welcome to the 74th edition of the Lonely Hearts Club for BTS. In the Lonely Hearts Club we explore strategies to cope with one of the most dreaded situations in Civ IV ( possibly the main reason for reloads after the military collapse one ): starting in isolation....

Our next leader is Hammurabi of Babylon.
Spoiler :

Traits: Aggressive & Organized
Aggressive is what it is. Use it to go play with the barbs. Oh, don't forget about half priced Drydocks.

Organized is really really nice here. Cheap Lighthouses, Courts, and Factories.

Techs: Agriculture & The Wheel
Awesome techs, both of which will be immediately useful.

Unique Building
The Garden
A Colosseum replacement which provides two healthiness. While not great, far from useless. This thing is, in essence, an eighty hammer Aqueduct which also happens to provide a happy. Not too shabby.

Unique Unit
Bowmen
Archers with a 50% bonus against melee. Meh, I wouldn't even consider this unless one is compelled to tech Hunting for whatever reasons :mischief:

The Start
Spoiler :
PptKM.jpg

I hope this isn't too easy. Alas, you never know, maybe the enemy has Gems too :mischief:

For those who are new to total isolation, you may want to take a peek at r_rolo1's guide, You, Yourself and your shadow : Some lessons on isolated starts

You will find the zipped saves below. Choose your level then choose your level (more precisely) then choose your speed and get underway. For Monarch+, don't forget to add Archery to the barbs. No huts & no events are selected.

Suggestions for updates are:

Checkpoint 1 - when we have explored the island and are aware of what resources it has. Its not so important when this is, but this is a time to discuss city sites etc. Don't look into a checkpoint 1 spoiler until you have reached this point yourself.

Checkpoint 2 - first contact - when we have met all the other AIs. At this point we can discuss our strategy to get to this point and our plans for dealing with them.

Checkpoint 3 - when we are committed to a victory condition (or at least think we are).

Checkpoint 4 - Victory (or defeat).

Finally, a thank you to r_rolo1 and all those that came before him in this series' initial run and to TheMeInTeam for the map creation guides, and to everyone else who co-hosted this series. Enjoy!

Checkpoint 1(2360BC)
Spoiler :
Settled in place, then did a Worker > Warrior >Worker(@pop2) > Warriors till pop 4ish(spawn busters) > Settler. I try to pick the closest now > later city, with the intent of getting it up and running faster than any other city in the world.

Techs went - Mining > Bronze > Pottery > Animal Husbandry > Mysticism

CYbDJ.jpg

The current plan is for no wonders, and to fill this mamber jamber out ASAP, the SW Clam site is next.

Now that is a juicy start...

Is the rest of the island a desert to compensate? =)
Can't wait to play this out tonight!

Warrior SW to peak? Maybee if there is two more gems there we won't SiP?

If we SiP, techpath should be mining first paired with building a worker.
Seeing that there is allready a forested plains hill in the BFC, and that we have a extra hammer from the city, BW can be postponed.

Exploration will determine if this is viable.

I would want to go pottery quick, and set up a minor town close to the capital to get cottages up to speed as soon as possible.

Emperor/Normal, Played to 1 AD.

Spoiler :
Slow expansion to 7 cities. A bit worker-short, but as you can see, I'm building 2.

Land is fairly production-poor, there's no way we're gonna win without Universal Suffrage.

I was first to Confu, probably first to Taoism as well. If I can get first to Islam, might be a fairly cut-and-dry Cultural affair since everyone on the main continent probably despises each other.

Checkpoint 1 2760 BC.
Spoiler :

I settled in place, started to build a worker and tech mining.

At this stage, I decided to tech AH, both cows and sheep are near me.
Spoiler :
BwoXn.jpg

First warrior I built was sent on a mission to scout the north-east region. he went this path to end up in a forest (I saw a lion up there earlier).
At the end of the third warrior, I swapped a city citizen to work a plains hill, instead of a forested grassland, to get the warrior out one turn earlier, and to start work on the second worker as soon as possible at pop 3.

Spoiler :

yjAM3.jpg

When the horses popped up in BFC, I decided I would have enough production, and quick enough teching, so that I could afford to go pottery before BW.
I built a second worker at population 3, and decided to hook up the horses before I started to build a cottage, to be able to build a barb-defense chariot.

Spoiler :

Dotmap:
I color coded blue for commerce cities, red for production citys (The island has low production I think. Might change when copper/iron shows up.)
And one white city, that will have almost no tiles.

Thoughts about the land:

We are on a quite small island, or at least it feels that way.
We can glimpse a island to the NW, should explore that area soon.

We have alot of callendar happy-resources around, so I think that we should go fishing->saling pretty soon, to open up for calendar.

I think that calendar, CoL, civil service and optics are the things we should go for.

Cottage capital, and help it to pre-work some cottages that will get available after calendar.
Work two scientist specialists, build a academy with the first or second.
Use the others for bulbing.

Endgame..?
Stage some invasion on a weak AI to get more land?
Get internet, and then re-fit island to suit production?

I get to the spoilers now that I'm at checkpoint too and I'm seeing some silly things :p.

Anyway, checkpoint 1 (1 AD):

Spoiler :

checkpoint1.png

In place is obvious, as is setting up bur capitol on this kind of start. I did a few unorthodox things here:

1. Teched BW ---> mysticism to get stonehenge. BW was part of the opening anyway, but I moved mysticism up after seeing multiple ocean seafoods and other sites that benefit from the wonder. SH is the only wonder I pursued, however.

2. After mysticism I went to pottery ----> calendar on a beeline. Yes, straight hard-teched fish/sail/writing/math/calender like such with only a minor detour for AH, followed immediately by iron working. This is because of the number of different calendar resources we have. At +3 from that and +1 from gems, this is a strong opening.

After that, the normal currency/monarchy/code/civil service path ensues, and we're at the tail end of that by 1 AD. Barbs have been 100% spawnbusted (including galleys) for some time. I have encountered 0 barb galleys this game and never will on home continent.

Checkpoint 2

Spoiler :

Runaway tech lead for...me?

libastro.png

check2empire.png

check2tech.png

Well, ok game. After civil service I got the astro pre-reqs (though sal map demand let him beat me to circumnavigation grr) and then bulbed education once to take astro with lib.

BTW, GPP went 1st=Gprophet (settled in cap), 2nd = Gsci (academy in cap) 3rd = Gsci bulb philo and found taoism and 4th = Gsci bulb education.

The tech pace in this is pretty slow and I have a good research base that will only improve with observatories and oxford. I'm thinking I'll forgo my more typical bio + rep route in favor of drafting aggressive rifles to tear the AI up. If I get 1-2 vassals on the main continent it will be a snowball death fest. Draft AGG rifles are nasty and I have the amount + kinds of cities to sustain TONS of draft easily w/o suffering much unhappiness even.

Still, the religious hate in my game makes the AI very slow in tech. 1000 AD and most immortal AI lack guilds? You don't see this often.

Checkpoint2
Spoiler :
Runaway tech lead for...me?

Spoiler :
Yeah, the commerce here is redonkulous. I had both CS and Astro by 700AD, then ended up Libbing Rep Parts. This was with only three GS - Academy, one bulb for Astro, then another for Printing Press. The rest of my GP are slated to be Merchants for trade missions.

Nice call on Drafting. I'm having trouble deciding between that and SpaceVC.

Still checkpoint 1.
Spoiler :
I had around 3 sea/cost tiles left to explore, and ofcourse there is seafood hidning in them!
I moved one of the production cities 1 tile south, to get the clams.

Spoiler :
Don't chop all of your trees. Replaceable Parts may be a godsend here.

Spoiler :
Yeah, now that you mention it I'll probably save Sippar for a semi-production city and have it use the food surplus for a few specialists for lategame Corps.

My other plan is to use the food surplus in my other Cottaged cities to parallelize GA production for a Cultural Win.

Eh, if this works it will have been a pretty boring game, and a waste of Hammurabi's traits. But whatever.

Cultural Victory, 1908 AD

Spoiler :
With a Warrior-defended civilization all the way! I had a diplomatic nightmare to deal with, given that I had to stay in Pacifism for the Great Artist production bonus. But though a lot of giving in to demands, I managed to even get Isabella to Pleased despite a different religion.

The actual Cultural Victory was pretty poorly done. Isabella was done with her ship except for Casings. I picked a fairly poor 3rd city, and had to bomb it heavily to get it to Legendary. I should have settled my cities with Culture in mind.

Pretty much the first game I've seen where Isabella went into beastmode.

Well, that's a loss but I learnt how UNO works ...

Spoiler :

I settled really slowly. 3 cities when I hit CoL :D
Then I settled 10 cities on my island. Since I hate watter wars and I had 10 cities (and I'm lazy), I told myself, "Let's go for a diplo win".

I went spec/setlled spec in my capitole, one cottaged citie for gold and workshop all the land. I founded Sushi and grown my cities.

civ4screenshot0010k.jpg

civ4screenshot0011e.jpg

Cathy was going for culture, but I was able to win before her. Then, I took my lesson. I wasn't eligible for the UNO although I was first in pop in the demo screen. Well it seems that the vote number is calculated according to your cities population (15, 16, 17, ...) and not the "demo" population. I have few big cities but Isa has more small ones. I didn't konw that, so between tow UNO secretary election, I chain-revolted Cathy's citie. But there was nothing to do, I wasn't able to be elected.

I would really konw why they designed that this way... I mean, the "demo pop" is an exponantial of the "cities pop" beacause pop30 to pop31 costs more than pop5 to pop6. But then, for the UNO it's the other way again. Seriously ?!

I stopped 2 or 3 turns before Cathy wins. Can't find the courage to do it again :(

EDIT : Oh yes, and in my game all the IAs went for Buddhism. So, not so many wars. Though one. Isolation + unique religion :(

I uploaded my 1 AD save, Any hinters about what I might to sub-par is appreciated.
Not really much I can say except keep up the good work. The closest save I have is 50AD, and is attached.

350 AD astronomy

Teching Alphabet was a big mistake. With better decisions, astronomy probably would have been out 5 turns earlier. Only one of my cities produced a lot of hammers, so I could have just dumped it into buildings/warriors/workers/settlers.

Checkpoint 2
Spoiler :

I met everybody, then traded around a little bit whilst trying not to make anyone too pissy. Now the final Lib push is in full effect. I notice that I have a GS about to come out a few turns prior to Lib. Meaning, bulb Printing Press + a turn or two of teching, then Lib Rep Parts.

Thank you barbs, for the hamlets, pasture, fishing boat, and worker. Four C1/CR1 Swords and didn't loose a single one. Illinois was up in no time. Me thinks Moai is going here.

Maybe I cheated a lil bit because I know the map, but I couldn't resist this.

After Libbing Rep Parts, the plan is to go straight for Econ > Corp. In the middle of that, there will be a big civic switch - Free Religion, Representation, & Free Market all in one fell swoop.

Spoiler :
I have a tough time understanding how that would have happend as well.
For me it was cathy with hindu in one end of the island, saladin with confushianism in the other, and izzy with buddism in the middle.

nappy+hannibal joined buddism, and memed joined confushianism.
