Introduction: Hello everyone. This is my first Let's Play - and it's a pretty short one. This game is saved and I can continue it at any point, but for now, this is pretty much a 125 turn playthrough of my Ancient World mod. I've always wanted to do something like this and now that my game is pretty much in its completed phase, I can.

This game is heavily modded and almost every asset has changed. Therefore, I will attempt to guide you readers through the changes as I explain the game. I'll highlight the most glaring ones: like resource changes, tech tree changes, civilization/leader changes, and unique unit effects. Keep in mind some of the civilizations which really aren't important to this let's play haven't been discussed at all.

Before we begin the Let's Play, I posted the tech tree for the mod, just so you can quickly view the changes and see how I'm progressing through the tree. I tried to limit my screenshot taking and focus on writing so it'll be less cluttered.

Spoiler :

Also, keep in mind that this mod is more challenging than the base game (at least in my opinion) due to the increased hostility of barbarians and the lack of really powerful units until turn 200 or so. There is no beelining in this mod, the techs cost too much as you go deeper into the tree and I feel as if my tech links are balanced enough that you can't just...say, rush Metal Casting like you could Steel in the base game. Even if you did, every unit on the bottom third of the tree requires a resource (minus archers), so that would be wasting your time.

The main goal of this thread is really to have fun and spread the word of my mod at the same time. With that said, I hope you all enjoy. :D

Civilization: Sumeria
Leader: Gilgamesh
Trait: Units move faster through River tiles. Each Culture Building now also provides +1 Culture.
Map Type: Putmalk's Mediterranean (custom map from the mod)

We begin our adventure in the desert, across a long river. The land around us is unknown, but the river provides us with fertile soil, ripe for growing our cities quickly. Our civilization is in a rich location, with Gems to our left and Spices to our right. Our people feel that this land is perfect. We establish our capital, Ur, and send our warriors to explore the land to our north. Our people want to harvest the Gems, so we instruct our scientists to explore the process of Mining.

turn35.jpg

Time passes by and our civilization is growing! Our warriors discover the coast to our north. The coast is ripe with resources that will dazzle our citizens. We instruct our warriors to head south, where we discover the city-state of Emporion. They share this river with us, which may lead to some issues in the future. However, that is a worry for another time. We train scouts to help us explore our land: knowledge is key to success in this harsh environment. We discover another civilization to our west. They call themselves the "Medes". Perhaps they are a friendly people, but for now, our council has deduced them to be a threat to our civilization and to treat them with caution.

Median Civilization
Leader: Cyaxares
Trait: Triple gold for clearing Barbarian encampments and capturing cities, and when you capture a Barbarian encampment, you have a 50% chance to gain 25 gold and convert the unit to your side.

Our civilization decides that expansion is the best course of action. We send settlers to claim the coast to our north, securing the Pearls that we will use in the future to spread joy through our land.

turn58.jpg

Things have progressively slowed down and our people are no longer happy with us. The awe of the gems has died down and now our citizens demand more. Our people settle along the coast again, expanding our influence and setting us up to become a strong naval power in the future. We employ Workers to make our citizens happy. It is time to begin to harvest the Spices and let our people enjoy their allure and taste.

In the meantime, we discover a new city-state to our east, along a peninsula. They call themselves Mari. We greet them and they provide us a gift of gold. These seem like friendly people. We resolve to grant them a handsome gift of gold sometime in the future. Their alliance may prove useful to us. Meanwhile, to the north, our scouts continue to explore across the coast. We meet an emissary from a new people, who call themselves the Hittites.

Hittite Civilization
Leader: Suppiluliuma
Trait: Iron resources grant double quantity. Your Mines produce +1 Production.

Our council seems pleased with our progress so far. We have granted our people freedoms enjoyed by few others, pursuing Liberty.

Liberty changes (from adopted policies):
Opener: Cost of buying land reduced by 33%, cost of building Settlers in capital reduced by 33%
Collective Rule: Happiness buildings constructed 25% faster, and a Free Worker appears near the capital

turn81.jpg

Our people continue to expand, and our civilization seems to be much better off than it was before. Our people have discovered Gold to the south and have decided to settle near it, wondering what wealth could be shared amongst the people. Our scouts have been slaughtered to the north, but our scouts to the west remain active and useful. We have decided to call this large ocean to our north the Mediterranean. Planning has begun in order to explore these seas and discover what awaits beyond the unknown.

turn90.jpg

Something alarming has been brought the attention of our council. We are lacking powerful resources that other civilizations have secured! We are missing Copper, which the Hittites have secured, which our scouts report could have granted our civilization access to powerful units such as the Spearman and Axeman (30% vs. Melee Units)! This is troubling news, indeed. However, our civilization is rich. We can afford to buy our commodities. Our first goal is to seek an ally. We grant the Mari a powerful donation of 1000 gold to do our bidding and offer protection and resources. They happily oblige. Our empire has also secured many Spices, and it is now our goal to trade these away. Sailors are being instructed on the ways of the sea, and we should have a warship ready to scout the ocean soon!

In addition, an emissary from the Persians have arrived! We merely greet them and move on, we have no intention of trading with them.

Persian Empire
Leader: Darius
33% less Unhappiness from Cities, Golden Ages last 50% longer, and units move twice as fast during a Golden Age

turn106.jpg

Our people have noticed aggressive expansion by our neighbors, the Medes. We have decided that their people must suffer in order to learn their place. Our people are actively training warriors and catapults (do not require Iron). Our sailors have set sail across the ocean, and have discovered a new land, and a new civilization!

Phoenician Civilization
Leader: Hiram
Trait: Fishing Boats produce +2 Gold, Naval Maintenance reduced by 33%

These people are eager traders and have agreed to pay us for some of our Spices!

turn108warbackstab.jpg

What atrocity is this? The Hittites and their allies, Persia, have declared war on us! Their armies are closing in from the east, but our warriors were about to close in on the Medes! Our council has decided to pull back to defend our lands before our war on the Medes.

OOC: Lost in this declaration of war was the fact that a turn before I had paid the Hittites 220 gold for 5 Copper, and then they declared war on me, stealing my gold! That's a human move!

turn110.jpg

Further exploration reveals an extremely weak force by the attackers. Our council laughs at the incompetency of our foes, and we quickly crush the attack force. Apparently, this swift destruction of our enemies has scared them off, and they quickly sue for peace. Their land is unknown to our armies, so we decide to back off and continue plans for attack on the Medes.

turn116warmedes.jpg

Our attack plans are set. Our soldiers ready to attack the Medes. This will be a swift war, as our scouts inform us of little resistance from the Medes. Our soldiers quickly overwhelm the Median cities, burning Ruha and capturing Raga on our way to their capital.

turn125peacemedeswarhit.jpg

Our soldiers close in on Agbatana, completing our lightning war. Lasting only a few years, our soldiers suffer no casualties the Medes have been eliminated as a threat. We sign peace with the Medes with a large sum of payment in return. However, a new threat has arrived in the homeland, as enemy Hittite warriors have attacked our people! These bastards will pay for this!

Following the destruction of these Hittite warriors, our goal remains to expand across the land and construct a large navy to aid us in capturing coastal cities. Our people will be feared around the world, and our empire will be envied by all! Our great king Gilgamesh wills it so!
