Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 29
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the twenty-nineth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of new features in Civilization 5 to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these new features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

In this game, the designated VC is Science. You may win by any VC you wish, as all VC's are enabled, but the results will be posted with fastest finish by Science victory and then all other VC listed below by fastest time. Good Luck!

In this game you will play as Darius I and lead the Persian civilization to victory. It's a standard-sized mystery map played at Emperor difficulty and at standard pace. Science victory is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until March 1st to complete the game and submit.

:band: Welcome back to our Mac friends who just got their patch (8 Feb) that allows them to join us again.

Please note that you are only allowed to build Oxford University one time. :nono:

You can build Satrap's Court, which replaces the Bank. Satrap's Court increases the city's output of wealth while also increasing your civilization's happiness. In order to build Satrap's Court, your city must have a Market and you must discover the technology of Banking.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Game In Progress thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play.

After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! , We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the two week period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after two weeks, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature)

This game runs for four weeks and ends Thursday, 1 March 2012.

The Save can be found here.

I think I'll move the warrior to the forest hill across the river. If what he spots looks good I might settle on that hill. Otherwise I'll settle in place and save that hill for mining. Settling in place looks like it'd give plenty of good farm and production tiles. Of the tiles we can see, moving across the river to settle on the hill would only lose 1 flatlands riverside farm, but give us an extra 1 production in the city, which can save a turn or two on those early builds. Plus the move would put 1 silver in the 1st ring which unlocks before the marble. So it'll really depend on what the warrior can see to determine if it'll be better to stay in place or move the the hill.

^^ i think far too much store is put in to moving the settler. if you move the warrior one way to see more terrian and then move the settler accordingly, how do you know there arent better tiles in the opposite direction that you might miss out on. the extra production is a fair point but the silver tile will probably pop with teh first culture expansion.

looking at that start... this is going to be another very fast game. no shortage of food, gold or production.

...and it drags me away from GOTM27, you have no idea how many times ive re-ran that.

The only move worth considering is onto the marble, so you can get the GL production bonus without researching Masonry.

But giving up watermill/garden/southern hills seems too big a price to pay. Unless the warrior move NW-W shows amazing resources or hills.

Move the warrior west to see if settling the marble is worth considering, otherwise settle in place. If it was Deity then I would probably settle the marble for faster early cash (to buy troops in case if DOWed early) and better chance to get the GL. But on Emperor it's probably not worth losing the river bonuses (as Dave McW stated).

Any move by the warrior is only to find a second city site. There's no way that I am not going to settle in place.

Agree. Settling in place seems the best choice. The GL can be easily got at emperor if you beeline writing and got no ultra lucky AI catching writing at turn 6!

This spot is epic, it gonna be a good game i think. Emperor is my favourite level too.

And no more >2 GB files!

Wait wait wait... I'm pretty sure you still need to research Masonry to get access to the marble. You just don't have to improve the tile any more.

PS: To me this looks like one of the best starting positions I've ever seen.

Yes you need to research masonry to get the marble for the happiness, however, if you settle on top of marble you do get the wonder construction bonus immediately. So in this case settling the capital on the marble would speed the construction time of any wonders before researching masonry.

I have not played these GOTMs for some time owing to game instability trying to run in a Windows 7 partition on an iMac via Parallels. At some point it became too unstable to be playable in the Windows partition so I had to wait for the Mac version to catch up.

Just tried to play #29 and could not. The system processed a Steam update, but did not apply the latest Mac patch which I think is supposed to be 1.0.1.511. That was always automatic in the past, cannot find any way to force it to update. So the current game cannot be played.

I posted a question on to the Steam support people, but have any Mac players run into the same thing and how did you deal with it? Is anyone actually playing the current game on a Mac?

Thanks.

Thank you, and by following Alan H's advice there I was able to solve it. For other Mac users just see his suggestion where you right click the Civ 5 game on the Steam page, select properties, etc. until you check and reconcile all the files. Kind of a shame the new upgrade does not do that for you or at least alert you to the problem. It worked pretty fast and then the correct Mac version was applied. I am now able to play the GOTM 29.
