Hi

Since the 131.x beta versions I've been experiencing problems with starting a game using maps/scenarios that I've created using the world builder.

Description of problem: When I start a game using only VEM, select the map and start the game the game I see the loading screen and the mouse pointer turns into the round world thingy. When the game finishes loading the mouse turns into the "triangular mouse pointer thingy" and you should be able to press "begin your journey". This button doesn't appear however when I have VEM enabled and I have no choice but to stop CiV using Task Manager...

I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out what's going on but unfortunately there's no log notifications and since I can't even start the game no fire tuner messages either. I'd like to stress that I've only got VEM in my mods folder, I clear the cache in between every try and I've also tried verifying the integrity of the game cache through Steam.

As said I'm having trouble figuring out what's going on here. Considered incompatibility with other mods (but these have been removed now), some kind of problems with my scenario settings (but it doesn't work with maps alone tither), ... It all comes down to the point that I have problems trying to load up a map created with the world builder with no scenario at all IF I have VEM enabled. If I try starting the game without VEM enabled it runs smoothly...

Also tried creating maps of similar size from ingame instead and this seems to work - the I won't be able to control a lot of map and game settings however.

Hope you/we can somehow figure out whats going on here as I can hardly imagine playing CiV without VEM and I'm really looking forward to the next public release.

A map with no scenario is attached in the post. This map causes a "crash for me".

I recently noticed this problem too. In my case, I can start the test map I use for debugging (attached), but if I click next turn the game crashes. I once encountered this half a year ago. Oddly enough, I created a completely new scenario map and it worked okay. This implies some specific setting in a scenario is combining with something in VEM to cause a crash. Crashes are very rare in Civ 5, and like you pointed out, produce nothing in the log file. This makes it difficult to isolate the problem.

But I already tried:
  • loading a map with no scenario created
  • loading a map with a scenario but not enabling the scenario
  • loading a map with a scenario and enabling the scenario

I'm experiencing problems with all three.

Do you have any suggestions on what I could do?

It loads for me as well - both with and without the scenario enabled.

This is so weird. Should I just keep trying and hope for the best..?

PS: Unavailable for couple of days - leaving for Amsterdam in 30 minuttes :-)

I do agree with you that there's some problems going on here, they're just hard to track down. I haven't put much work (yet) into solving the issue since it affects few players.

I couldn't see the Continents + map before loading this past game. Had to play on Continents. Also I couldn't see the icon for Workshop playing as Elizabeth on the startup screen.

I mentioned earlier I was having the same problems that skodkim is talking about, I just didn't word the problem nearly as well as what he has.
I noticed someone else posted a question somewhere else in a thread about if it mattered if in a scenario you have or don't have policy saving turned on or off matters (and or other settings available in a scenario) since you have put that into the MOD is about the time I started having problems playing with scenarios??? I don't remember seeing a response to that question is the reason I was asking again.

edit: I can load and play a game with a world builder map, I just can't play a game with the same map and the scenario button checked. It will load, but after you click on next turn the game locks up.

The policy saving change was made a year ago, and I only started having trouble with my test map in the past few weeks, so I'm relatively certain that's not it.

Thal - just thought I would bring this topic up again - ( Sorry ) - but the ability to play a game with a scenario is still not possible with v137. I can drop back down to v131 and everything works fine. So, I was wondering if this was still on some back burner somewhere still trying to get resolved??

Thanks!!

I intend to fix this, but it's a lower priority than other bugs because it doesn't affect everyone, and might take a very long time to identify. I haven't ever encountered a problem like this before, so it will require some trial and error, which might take one hour or twenty.

D... Just had an idea. Deleted all mods and loaded the scenario. I then saved the map as a new file, redownloaded VEM and tried loading the newly saved map.

Same result :-(

FYI I just tried loading the scenario with 137.3. Still doesn't work.

As a little test I also tried deleting the "Terrain" library of VEM. Unfortunately this doesnt solve the problem either.

After this I tried starting a new map with 137.3 alone (terrain library moved back in before) but now I can't even get that to work. Will try verifying game cache again - sigh...

Actually I'm experiencing a lot right now with non worldbuilder maps. Every time it happens CiV is corrupted and I have to download part of it again. Double sigh...

i'm also having problems loading scenarios with 138.10 loaded. i get to turn 12 or 13 and it crashes, doesn't matter which civ i've selected. the same map/scenario worked fine before with 131 (but now i don't have a copy of 131 to use!).

wanted to make sure skodkim and Core Xii don't feel alone... hoping that VEM can support scenarios in the future (at least by the time G&K comes out)

It worked a few weeks ago, so it can work again. I've just gotta figure out what changed. I've spent a few hours searching for the problem without success so far.

Sooooo frustrating. Really felt like starting playing again but all I've done for the last week or so is trying to get the d... thing to start...

Well, guess Thal will find out what's wring here.. :-)

just by way of FYI:

same issue with loaded scenarios in v139.2 (crashes after 6-12 turns). i haven't tried it with v140.1 yet, but i DID just test 139.2's CIVUP only and got 100 turns in with no problems. so the bug is definitely on the VEM balance side (i always clear cache/moduserdata before starting a new game).

i only use civwillard + infoaddict (plus ingame editor sometimes), all up-to-date. i've never had issues with those three and scenarios before.

I will also note how much of a difference it is playing with the (unbalanced) vanilla settings... hat's off to VEM
