Welcome to Sons of Monarchy: Round III

Our third round will feature Gilgamesh of Sumeria
civ4screenshot0001j.jpg

Gilgamesh is:
Protective: Archery & Gunpowder Units start with Drill I & City Garrison I, and Double Production of Walls & Castles
Creative: +2 :culture: per city, and Double Production of Library, Theatre, and Colosseum

Quick border pops and cheap libraries are very nice. Protective is pretty poor, but it has its uses.

Sumeria's Starting Techs & Uniques:
Agriculture & The Wheel
Ziggurat: A courthouse that is accessible at Priesthood (rather than Code of Laws) and costs 90 :hammers: (as opposed to 120 normally)
Vulture: A 6 :strength: Axeman that has a +25% melee bonus (rather than 5 :strength: and +50% melee)

Good uniques, with the Ziggurat being both cheaper and earlier. The vulture is a very nice unit that can make axerushing more enticing. One note on the vulture: because of CIV's goofy combat mechanics, an unpromoted Vulture will actually have losing odds against an unpromoted Axe when the defending unit is on unforested flatland. For mechanics see here.

Hemispheres Map, One Extra AI, No Huts, No Events, All Other Settings Standard
Spoiler Map Details :
First map rolled! Two full continents with some minor islands/landmasses. Extra AI was added so that each continent would have 4 civilizations.

To play: I am using the same process as the Noble's Club so those familiar with that excellent series just do the same thing. Download the attached zip files & unzip into your BTS/Saves/Worldbuilder folder. Go to Custom Scenarios, select the SoM Save corresponding to your desired difficulty level, and customize game settings as desired. You will need to add techs to barbs. To do so:
Spoiler :
zoom all the way in, open worldbuilder, and add the appropriate techs to the barbarian civilization. This means archery at monarch or higher, hunting at emperor or higher, agriculture at immortal or deity, and the wheel at deity.

Posters are encouraged to include: Thoughts on start/where to settle first and what initial tech path. Later saves can include position at 1 AD, liberalism race as a midgame checkpoint, and the final result. Players are encouraged to post as much as they desire, though screenshots/saves make receiving help easier. Spoiler details about the map and your playing for all details except regarding the opening screenshot.

Good luck, and happy civving!

I like settling 1E for the extra gold (give up 1 clam but still settle on PH). Upon settling
Spoiler :
a wet corn is revealed. Meaning open Mining-> BW ->Fishing and Worker->warriors until fishing is in then a work boat or two? Or build a worker while teching fishing first, then building a wb or two for the clams once the worker is done (delaying mining/BW so our worker is doing nothing but roading until mining is in). Thoughts?

Very strong start. Unfortunately I managed to play myself into a corner. (Immortal)

Spoiler :
Settled 1E. Blocked Hammy off into his appendix of the continent, and Izzy to the NE. Unfortunately Sury claimed the jungle to the south.

I teched like mad (no wonder with four cities with gold) and took out Izzy with catapults and vultures. I vassaled her as she had two off-shore cities. Then I elepulted Hammy. Won Lib along the way, but only for PP. The Hammy war nerfed my tech to hell, and I'm in fairly meh spot. I've got rifling and steel, but steel is well known, and rifling can be researched by everyone.

The one truly bad thing is however Mr. Friendly Sury. He's grown huge (though only has like 16 cities to my 23), and spammed out an immense army. He's twice the power of anyone else in the world. My 60-unit stack that I've got left from Hammy's wipeout is not even 0.4 of his power. Madness. I hope he declares on SB and takes his army offshore, so I can backstab him with cannons, but... ugh.

Woof.

Spoiler :
I spun my wheels big time on this one, squandering a great start. Three cities got double-gold and Izzy got Vulture rushed into oblivion, but by the time I was ready to invade the other continent Tokugawa and Pacal were both ridiculous. Declared on Brennus anyway, and he peacevassaled to Tokugawa mid-war, at which point Tokugawa shut the war down with the AP. Decided to go space... and Pacal decided to go culture, and with his uber-start he came very, very close. Declared at the last minute, ICBM'd him until he couldn't feel feelings anymore, and then took the cheap space win. Blech. This is a really, really nice start, and I blew it bad.

Space win around 1850AD, lost literally 10 units the entire game

Spoiler :
Play Monarch/Marathon. This is one of the easiest games I've played. I peacefully expanded to about 10 cities, boxing Izzy in and stealing all the good city sites. She ended up having to expand to the south taking a bunch of crap jungle spots. All early religions founded on the eastern continent so when I Oracle'd CoL I founded Conf and it spread all through my continent, creating kind of a love-fest. Except for Babylon who declared on me and I crushed him with elepults before feud so I got all but 1 of his cities. Built Forbidden Palace on his little area down there to control maintenance. My tech pace was blistering, hitting over 3k beakers at 100%/building research trying to get to the spaceship techs. Ridiculously boring hitting end turn over and over again.

Probably should've went Dom much sooner with my huge tech lead.

If you play the game you'll find everything I mentioned before you even start making your 1st settler. Imo it's nothing spoiled.

simply not true...don't do it again

FFS, I got declared on by AI that was +14 friendly with me and +7 pleased with my vassal. That averaged to bloody +10.50, what the hell is this crap?

Of course this lost me the game, since I was in process of conquering an AI to vassal/grab cities and win UN (Pacal was turboing to culture and space wouldn't cut it).

Bollocks.

simply not true...don't do it again

This is completely FALSE but your entitled to your opinion, which I DO NOT agree with at all so of course I'll continue posting as I see fit ;). Simply use ignore all post if it makes you feel better.

Its a big spoiler as it changes your plans completely from the start.

This makes no sense to me either. Regardless what your plans from the start are as soon as you walk around for a small bit you gather all the info I stated and will have ANY CHOICE you wish to change your game accordingly. Nothing you do up to growing your Capital to size 3 is going to change ANY of this.

Edit:

For anyone else who thinks otherwise, if you look at my previous post I almost exclusively USE SPOIL tags with anything of importance. For those thinking I have spoiled something I DISAGREE 100% and nothing anyone can say will change my mind, period. I hate to even say something like this but IMO, the "you have spoiled" the game comments have zero merit, not at all.

Use the ignore button and problem solved. But I've probably already beat you too it :D.

So my first Monarch game ended in a learning loss; second was equal parts roflstomp and love-letter to Napoleon; third is that NC Stalin game (in progress, going well so far). This looks too good to pass up however.

First thoughts?
Spoiler :
Needs moar Gold.

I’m going to do this on Marathon; huts/events/diplo victory off.

I’m on turn 45, scouted the immediate surroundings and thrown down an initial dotmap:

My only real question at this point is regarding the North-Easternmost dot at the..
Spoiler :
sheep/gold/oasis spot. Apart from those resources it’s pretty junky and is right on Izzy’s doorstep – so will be fighting her capital’s culture. Sure Giggles is creative but that won’t be enough. Is that dot too brazen where it is? Looking at it now I think it should at least be 1W so it can share the corn too, share more FPs to help grow cottages and be a bit safer from her culture.

Certainly it seems wisest to settle somewhat aggressively towards her on those dots to block her off – then grab the 2 spots to the S/SW of Uruk.

Thoughts appreciated before I barrel on regardless. Thanks.

P.S. My tuppence on spoilergate FWIW? Yeah, while game speed will surely have an effect on how much is spotted by a certain point, personally on marathon pretty much all of cseanny’s post was uncovered by my first warrior before even my first build (worker) had popped out. Although I haven’t yet uncovered the

so scouting fail, I guess. Nothing to see here.

@cseanny:

You also do not swear towards a deaf man even though he can't hear you, do you? There are things you do not do, no matter if they have an impact or not. Besides, i disagree with you, but you do not seem to care what the rest of the world thinks so w/e. Ah, one more thing: acting in a way that the other folks aren't offended has nothing to do with taking away your freedom, but rather just with acting nice. Well, who am i talkin' to anway ~

@topic:
1E is almost out of question as you're not giving up anything and will gain one gold. Without any visible land based food resource, that'd be one of the cases where i'd tech fishing and wouldn't start on a worker - there won't be enough to do for him anyway, and if you want to grow you can't work the gold for a long time anyway. It's an odd scene where calculating the gains and losses in order to get the best opening possible is really advisable imo... as much as you want to work the gold asap, working it too soon will cost tremendous amounts of grow potential. Maybe i'll try this one out myself, just out of curiosity what the best opening might be - although i'm almost completely positive that, from what you can see, worker first isn't the best option.

@cseanny - No...what I'll do and hopefully others is simply use the Report Post button and have someone else take care of your spoiler posts. Historically, members of this forum have either put such information in spoiler tags or, if they accidentally posted such info and were called out on it, acted like a decent human being and, with humility, fixed their post immediately. Instead, you act like a stubborn dolt spouting out "you are all wrong, I'm right" despite the fact that literally everyone on this forum would disagree with you and, in fact, despite your "claims" that you cannot be convinced otherwise, you are still 100% wrong. Your "claims" don't change fact.

I'll probably get infracted anyway, so I'll just say that people like you, as well as some fairly recent visitors, bring down the quality of this exceptional forum and community.

My only real question at this point is regarding the North-Easternmost dot at the..
.

Spoiler :
I would just put it 1W and use all the specials there. The original spot can become dicey against her 2nd city in case she founds a religion and / or shows up with a wonder there. I would not be too concerned with her capital. The tiles to the east are pretty weak and you will notice early enough whether you are losing the culture battle or not. You can then still react accordingly.

I actually used that spot 1W as my 2nd city. It claims a lot of things but is a bit weak early on since you have to road through deserts and wait for a border pop. But then it quickly grows to a decent size and can pump workers and settlers.
