Hey,

I've just started building railways between some cities and the "3-yellow-dots" road trade route sign under the cities' name changed to a "3-white-dots" railway trade route sign.
The problem is, the change occurs BEFORE the railway is complete (just started) AND in cities that are only connected via road to a city that will be connected via railway.
(Hope I made it clear)

EDIT: okay, now 1 and additional turn(s) later, the trade route signs vary from city to city...?

@Thalassicus
The modifier of +25% is indeed shown in these cities although there is NO railway connection established.
The 4 cities are 2 conquered from russia and 2 founded on my own (but not the newest). All of them have ocean access but other harbour cities have normal road trade routes.

Harbors are supposed to grant an instant railroad connection - are you saying all four cities have harbors and road connections but only two have a railroad connection? If so, open up strategic view and put up the "trade routes" overlay, there might be geographical features or enemy units preventing the oversea TR from connecting. Perhaps a screenshot could make your situation clearer.:)

I've added a screenshot to make things more clear.
As you can see, Nagasaki, Moscow and Novgorod believe they have a railroad connection - probably via their harbours, but that would make no sense when it says "railroad trade route".
Osaka, Nara, Kagoshima have harbours too and no railroad connection.

EDIT: another strange behaviour occured: the "railroad trade route" icon appears now in all my cities if I change the production from gold to buildings! The only city now without this icon is on another island with no ocean access.

Okay, I see what's going on here: When building "wealth" or "science" .25*:c5production: production is added to gold or beaker income. However, production modifiers (such as a railroad connection) are not applied - it's .25*base :c5production: production, so the RR connection is there, but the icon isn't being displayed because it's not being applied. That's why it appears when you begin production on a building or unit.

This is a vanilla thing in the game core only Firaxis has access to. The railroad icon checks if that modifier is present in the city. VEM just makes the vanilla thing more visible. It's not practical to change this with mods.

But does a railroad trade route make sense anyway if a city has only harbour connection to the capital? Where do those trains roll logically? :confused::)

In fact that means you don't have to build 1 tile of railroad if all your cities have a harbour AND you don't need the extra speed for land units.

Yes, this is correct. It has been this way since vanilla release. You do not need to build railroads to gain the railroad bonus if all your cities are coastal.
