MickNES: Comfortably Numb

“Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone, I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown, The dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb”
Comfortably Numb, The Wall, Pink Floyd

Prologue

It is the year 2099. As time moves towards the 22nd Century, humans struggle for survival. Mankind’s constant consumption of resources drove them towards extinction. The constant growth of factories, cars, fossil fuel burning and littering heated the Earth up. Most of the world that you know is either desert, full of radiation or abandoned. There is barely any place to live. Natural disasters destroy what we called home. The world you know no longer exists. This is a completely different world. Let me talk you through the past 87 years.

By 2035 the average temperature on the Earth was 35°C. The whole of North Africa was uninhabitable, as temperature soared over 45°C. Places like Egypt, Algeria and Morocco were just sand. Thousands of years of war, wonders, stories, and history – all lost because mankind was ignorant to his actions. However, this international disaster did not stop the warmongering men of the world. India, once famed for its poverty, was now the superpower of the world. The richest country in the world, with the highest population, it was the envy of the world. Just behind India, was an old friend - China.

China was the most technological advanced country in the world. Feeling threatened by India’s attempt of unifying Asia, after taking Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and eventually Kazakhstan, China declared war on India. Using their latest invention, robotic droids to fight, they attacked India. World War Three had begun.
After 4 years of fighting, India was annexed by China, and China was the superpower of the world. Controlling all of the Far East, including Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and many of the smaller states in between, China was the strongest nation in the world. They continued their technological advances in their droids, and looked to put organic parts to make it more viscous. Just 10 years later, 2049, the world went through another World War. It was China, against the world.

An alliance of USA, Russia, UK, France, Germany, Brazil, Italy and Australia was formed. Even with their combined army, it was only half the size of China’s. China had evolved their robotic army and had made a Robotic controlled soldier with organic features of scorpions and snakes. It started to tear through the defences of the Alliance. In a last ditch attempt, the Alliance launched 25 nukes across China’s borders. China did the same, and Eurasia was a radiation filled wasteland.

World War Four ended, but so had many countries. About 40 million people went on a trek to the only habitable place on Earth, South Africa. Along the coast of South Africa, cities were set-up. Spes, Stor, Stella, Terra were the biggest. Humans began to live in peace once more…for about a year.

The robotic army that China made had no commander. And whilst the robotic side had no control, the organic side’s cells developed. It grew Nerve Cells, and eventually a brain. A small brain that only knows – kill to survive.

The Creatures, which is what they called them, ran rampant across the earth looking for food. Eventually they made it to the new cities. First it was Terra, 10 million people slaughtered without anyone’s knowledge. The whole city covered in blood. The creatures moved to the next cities, Stor and Stella. Mankind tried their best to defend themselves, but were slaughtered like pigs. Over 20 million people were killed. The creatures were strong, quick and showed no mercy. They spread over the last cities like wild fire. They went after mankind’s last hope – Spes.

In a last ditch attempt, 2 million men marched towards battle. Armed with the only weapons they could find, Plasma Pistols, or if you were lucky, a Laser Rifle, they awaited the Creatures. The Creatures came in massive numbers, some say about 4 million of them. Even with all their weapons and the odd Tank, the Creatures slaughtered the men. In just 2 days, 1 million men died. It looked as if the human race would be wiped out forever. However, as the Cape winter came, with the South Eastern wind, the Creatures grew sick. A virus, now called the K2C2 started weakening the Creatures. It attacked their lungs, and they struggled to breathe. They slowed down, became weak and became agitated. The humans quickly took advantage of this. Using their weapons, they started a massacre of the Creatures. The Creatures ran away, looking for shelter. They wiped out almost 8 million Creatures in 2 weeks. Over a year, not a single Creature was spotted. Scientists later discovered the virus that affected the Creatures. Known as H7N3, or more commonly, a type of Influenza. The War for Survival was over, and humans live in peace.

Spes was safe once more, but it was no longer the same city. Crime rates are at an all-time high, the police force is corrupt and the standard of living is very low. Food is not scares, but it is running low. Farms do not grow as they once did, and humans cannot leave by sea, as a constant storm looms across the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. The population of Spes is currently 4 million, but is dropping every day due to famine. While the middle class survives, anyone below is sure to die. Weapons are also very rare, only a few plasma pistols. Only the army has rifles and machine guns. The army seems to run the city, as many politicians have little control due to the corrupt police force.

Spes is on the verge of complete anarchy and collapse, and the city seems to be divided by those who are with the army and those who are against it. But Spes may face an even greater threat than civil war…

Welcome to MickNES! This is my first time as a mod of a NES so if I do make mistakes, take it easy on me please. I hope that you will enjoy this one like other NESes.

Comfortably Numb is a story driven NES. It is like Core. Take a look at it for an example of what I want this NES to be like. Unlike most NES’s, you ARE required to write RP. It survives on RP and would die if you don’t write it. Whether they are as good as Lord of the Rings or as bad as an English assignment that got an F, it does not matter. As long as you write them. The number of stories you write does not matter. Minimal is one per update. You can write as much as you want. The point is to write stories! Why you ask?
Well, because it is a Never Ending Story…duh.

Players will take control of a character that lives in Spes. You can do anything with this character. Kill a Creature, a human, steal things, live by yourself, become a general…anything! Obviously as GM, I will tell you if get out of hand. Rules for character creation is below.

This is just a pre-NES for sign-up and to make your characters. There are also a few questions I need to ask you. Okay, so let me explain the rules to you!

When you sign-up, you are required to create a character.

Character Creation

The following is required when you sign-up:

Spoiler :
Character Name:

Description (with age):

Job/Role : Can be anything. A list is below for various jobs. You may make your own.

History/Background:

Please keep it as original as possible. Do not be offensive to other ethnic groups, cultures, religions etc. Exact replicas of real characters will not be allowed. Names however can be the same.

You are also required to allocate stats for your character. You have:

25 points for 18+ years old
20 points for 13-17 years old
15 points for under 12 years old

And must allocate it between the following:

Spoiler :
• Strength: The physical strength of your character.

• Combat: How good your character is in combat, with or without weapons. Things like Martials Arts etc.

• Intelligence: How well your character thinks in tight or combat-oriented situations.

• Reflexes: How quickly your character reacts in tight or combat-oriented situations.

• These stats affect your characters ability in combat, and survival against a Creature.

10 points is the highest for any single stat. All your points must be spent when you create your character. Stats can improve through various actions.

For example, fighting a lot will improve combat and strength. This can also be done in RP. Example, training with the army.

Possible Jobs

Here is a list of possible jobs, but you can make up your own (be realistic please)

Spoiler :
• General of Army (Only one)
• Mayor (Only one)
• Head of Police (Only One)
• Rebel
• Private Detective
• Assassin
• Soldier for SDF (the army)
• Shopkeeper
• Janitor
• Teacher
• Orphanage Owner

Those are just a few options, but you can make up your own. I do require a general, Mayor and Head of Police for the story to make sense, but they can be NPC'd.

Player Interaction

Is possible and encouraged. Anything can be done. Talking and moving to locations can go on and on without the GM online. Physical actions, like fighting, killing etc. may be done, but results will be decided by me with a RNG roll, depending in various conditions. It is best that you tell me you are going to kill someone via a PM or VM, as posting it in the main thread will give other players the ability to run away or fight back.

If you are talking to an NPC, i shall respond as that NPC. You are free to make up your own NPC. Just give them a name, age and job.

Updates

Updates will be done once a week, which will recap past events and move the story line towards a certain direction. You are encouraged to take part in the story line but may have no involvement if you would like.

The City of Spes

Spes is the only known city in the world that contains humans. Located by the Cape of Good Hope, it is divided into five sections. There is the Western Farms, Suburbia, Southern Tip the Military Complex and Central Spes.

The Western Farms is basically…farms. There is a small bit of urban areas next to it, but it is mostly farms.

The Southern Tip is by the Cape Peninsula, which has a small agricultural area above it and a run down harbour below it. This is a very poor area. There are many slums and shacks. The crime rate is so high the police do not even bother setting up a station. If you do not get robbed, you are the luckiest man alive.

Suburbia is north of this farm. It is fairly large, and the middle class population lives here. North east of Suburbia is another small farming area.

In the centre of Spes, is Central Spes. This is the high-rise area of Spes. Many businesses and companies resound here. In the very middle of Central Spes is The Axl
Tower, the tallest building in Spes reaching 150m high. This is the mayor's office.

North of Central Spes is the Military Complex. The army of Spes lives and trains here.

A map shall be created.

The Population of Spes

A mix of Europeans, Spanish and Zulu. Some Asians live in Spes but are heavily discriminated against.

Main language is English, Afrikaans and Spanish. Some speak Zulu and Mandarin.

Average age is 25 years old. Very few over 55 years old.

All energy is produce by wind turbines because of the high wind speeds of the Cape. There are few cars, and even fewer with petrol. Bikes are usual form of transport though motorbikes are quite common using vegetable oil as fuel.

Weapons

The only population of Spes with Assault Rifles, Sub-Machine guns or anything big is the Spes Defence Force (SDF) which is the army.

However, there are a few smugglers, so if you are lucky you may get your hands on one.

Most weapons available to the public are Plasma Pistols, a bullet which burns through your skin instantly. A Laser rifle is the only major gun you can get legally, but you might as well go to a smuggler.

Old School weapons like Revolvers still exist but are dying out especially since bullets are not being manufactured regularly.

You can use baseball bats, or gardening tools which still do damage.

Weapons List

Spoiler :
Scorpian I (Plasma Pistol)
Paladin I (Plasma Pistol)

MP2K - (Plasma Sub-Machine Gun)
Kraken - (Plasma Sub-Machine Gun)

Thompson 3K - (Acid-Packed Shotgun)
SPS 2100 - (Plasma-Packed Shotgun)

Black Widow X - (Sniper Rifle)

Reserved

Well that is it...have fun.
You may post!
Also, would you guys like to be a Creature?

WOOHOO! Private Detective signing up, I'll fill out the rest later.

Character Name: James Defensor

Description (with age): James Defensor is a 23 year old man. He is about 5'11" tall with short brown hair. He is of an average weight, he clearly hasn't starved, but also hasn't grown fat with good food.

Job/Role : Private Detective

History/Background: James' family was a middle class American family when everything fell to pieces. His family fled the country rather than risk being involved in a world war, the likes of which had never been seen before. They hopped around from country to country in hopes of escaping the Creatures. Eventually, they arrived in South Africa and tried to continue as normally as possible. When the Creatures came, James' father went out to fight against them and retain their new home. Unfortunately, he was quickly slain by the Creatures, and James' mother died as Creatures tore through a field hospital near the front lines. James was left all alone and went into the Private Detective business to put food on the table. He learned to speak Spanish at a passable level to improve business and has made enough to get by somewhat comfortably in the city of Spes, very close to the border between Suburbia and the Southern Tip.

Strength: 5

Combat: 5

Intelligence: 8

Reflexes: 7

Name: Frederich Vendel
Description (with age): 40 year old man, seeming old for his age, with hair already gray and a long scar on his left hand. He seems to be on the border of sanity, though he is still good with weapons.

Job/Role : Shopkeeper/ weapons dealer.

History/Background: Vendel came here recently, hailing from Okahandja in former Namibia. He is a decendant of German immigrants who came to Namibia when it was still a German colony and lived here for generations since.

Namibia, what does that name mean anymore? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. His home city was overrun by creatures. He was one of the lucky ones, with an armored van and a machine gun, he fought his way here with a small convoy of survivors.

Lucky? After the world collapsed, the living envy the dead, lucky is not the proper word. Unfortunate, to live when all has died.

He devoted all his efforts to building weapons and machine guns, to fight off the creatures. He eventually suceeded in making a sucessful weapon. This was a machine gun that fired fast enough and efficiently enough to put a dent in the creatures, though without the virus, it would probably have been too little, too late. This does not stop him from (dillussionally, or as good advertising?) putting "The Gun that stopped the swarm" on his weapons when he sells them. He lives in a barbed wire compound in the millitary district, protecting himself from only-he-knows-what and comming out only to sell his guns, which take long to make and fetch a high price.

• 3 (with an injured arm, he is not very strong)

• 10 (if he knows anything, its how to work his machine guns)

• 9 (You have to have some intelegence to build a weapon like the Vendel gun, though he is borderline insane.

• 3 (His reflexes have slowed over the years)

Expressing interest, and making character. But I'll be gone for two weeks on Tuesday, so I won't be here when it starts. :(

Will be posting a Rebel character soon.. i have nothing to do till the final match starts ... :D

The weapons allowed are these i am guessing :

MW Weapons
BF3 weapons

Btw, it is possible to kill someone and take his weapons as well i think ?

@JoanK - Welcome...it's fine if you are gone when we start.
@bonegang - Welcome... yep futuristic versions of those weapons are allowed and you may take someones weapons if they are dead.

I am making a list of weapons. :D

Just remember most of those weapons are only for the Army...though a Weapons Dealer (coughcoughspacemancoughcough) might get your hands on some...

Might join this.

Character Name: Janos "Orvlövesz*" Csillag
*Means "Sniper" in Hungarian
Description (with age): A 25 year old man, with a determined look on his face. However, he is obsessed with his job, it is so bad that he was forbidden to ever have his gun outside duty.

Job/Role : Soldier

History/Background: Born into the small Hungarian community, Janos showed a rather violent nature from a very early age. He never paid much attention in the few lessons he learnt, instead preferring to spend time throwing rocks. At the age of 17, he was arrested for murder and carriage of an illegal weapon. True, accidental murder. However, a man from the SDF found that the skill of the shot rather impressive. From this day on, he was trained in the art of shooting people for a living.

5 - He's strong enough for most tasks he gets

7 - he is very good at fighting, having spent most of his life doing that.

8 - A tight situation is a combat situation. and he's good at that.

5 - his reflexes are quick enough to pull the trigger, yet in any other case, he is simply "not trained"

Weapon of choice is a modified black widow, enabled for better pinpointing.

Not too ridiculous, I hope?
