MickNES: Comfortably Numb
“Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone, I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown, The dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb”
Comfortably Numb, The Wall, Pink Floyd
Prologue
It is the year 2099. As time moves towards the 22nd Century, humans struggle for survival. Mankind’s constant consumption of resources drove them towards extinction. The constant growth of factories, cars, fossil fuel burning and littering heated the Earth up. Most of the world that you know is either desert, full of radiation or abandoned. There is barely any place to live. Natural disasters destroy what we called home. The world you know no longer exists. This is a completely different world. Let me talk you through the past 87 years.
By 2035 the average temperature on the Earth was 35°C. The whole of North Africa was uninhabitable, as temperature soared over 45°C. Places like Egypt, Algeria and Morocco were just sand. Thousands of years of war, wonders, stories, and history – all lost because mankind was ignorant to his actions. However, this international disaster did not stop the warmongering men of the world. India, once famed for its poverty, was now the superpower of the world. The richest country in the world, with the highest population, it was the envy of the world. Just behind India, was an old friend - China.
China was the most technological advanced country in the world. Feeling threatened by India’s attempt of unifying Asia, after taking Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and eventually Kazakhstan, China declared war on India. Using their latest invention, robotic droids to fight, they attacked India. World War Three had begun.
After 4 years of fighting, India was annexed by China, and China was the superpower of the world. Controlling all of the Far East, including Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and many of the smaller states in between, China was the strongest nation in the world. They continued their technological advances in their droids, and looked to put organic parts to make it more viscous. Just 10 years later, 2049, the world went through another World War. It was China, against the world.
An alliance of USA, Russia, UK, France, Germany, Brazil, Italy and Australia was formed. Even with their combined army, it was only half the size of China’s. China had evolved their robotic army and had made a Robotic controlled soldier with organic features of scorpions and snakes. It started to tear through the defences of the Alliance. In a last ditch attempt, the Alliance launched 25 nukes across China’s borders. China did the same, and Eurasia was a radiation filled wasteland.
World War Four ended, but so had many countries. About 40 million people went on a trek to the only habitable place on Earth, South Africa. Along the coast of South Africa, cities were set-up. Spes, Stor, Stella, Terra were the biggest. Humans began to live in peace once more…for about a year.
The robotic army that China made had no commander. And whilst the robotic side had no control, the organic side’s cells developed. It grew Nerve Cells, and eventually a brain. A small brain that only knows – kill to survive.
The Creatures, which is what they called them, ran rampant across the earth looking for food. Eventually they made it to the new cities. First it was Terra, 10 million people slaughtered without anyone’s knowledge. The whole city covered in blood. The creatures moved to the next cities, Stor and Stella. Mankind tried their best to defend themselves, but were slaughtered like pigs. Over 20 million people were killed. The creatures were strong, quick and showed no mercy. They spread over the last cities like wild fire. They went after mankind’s last hope – Spes.
In a last ditch attempt, 2 million men marched towards battle. Armed with the only weapons they could find, Plasma Pistols, or if you were lucky, a Laser Rifle, they awaited the Creatures. The Creatures came in massive numbers, some say about 4 million of them. Even with all their weapons and the odd Tank, the Creatures slaughtered the men. In just 2 days, 1 million men died. It looked as if the human race would be wiped out forever. However, as the Cape winter came, with the South Eastern wind, the Creatures grew sick. A virus, now called the K2C2 started weakening the Creatures. It attacked their lungs, and they struggled to breathe. They slowed down, became weak and became agitated. The humans quickly took advantage of this. Using their weapons, they started a massacre of the Creatures. The Creatures ran away, looking for shelter. They wiped out almost 8 million Creatures in 2 weeks. Over a year, not a single Creature was spotted. Scientists later discovered the virus that affected the Creatures. Known as H7N3, or more commonly, a type of Influenza. The War for Survival was over, and humans live in peace.
Spes was safe once more, but it was no longer the same city. Crime rates are at an all-time high, the police force is corrupt and the standard of living is very low. Food is not scares, but it is running low. Farms do not grow as they once did, and humans cannot leave by sea, as a constant storm looms across the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. The population of Spes is currently 4 million, but is dropping every day due to famine. While the middle class survives, anyone below is sure to die. Weapons are also very rare, only a few plasma pistols. Only the army has rifles and machine guns. The army seems to run the city, as many politicians have little control due to the corrupt police force.
Spes is on the verge of complete anarchy and collapse, and the city seems to be divided by those who are with the army and those who are against it. But Spes may face an even greater threat than civil war…
