Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 40
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the fortieth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of new features in Civilization 5 Gods & Kings to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these new features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

In this game, the designated VC is Science. You may win by any VC you wish, as all VC's are enabled, but the results will be posted with fastest finish by Science victory and then all other VC listed below by fastest time.

In this game you will play as Boudicca and lead The Celtic civilization to victory. It's a standard-sized Arborea mystery map played at King difficulty and at standard pace. Science victory is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until August 15th to complete the game and submit.

Very happy to have out Mac players with us, hope you enjoy the game. :)

Please note that you are only allowed to build Oxford University one time. :nono:

Civ V G&K - TSG40 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: Boudicca - Celts
Number of AI Opponents: 9
Number of City-States: 16
Map type: Arborea Mystery
Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: King
Game pace: Standard
Game options: Promotion saving is enabled. Quick Combat is disabled (You may now turn it on using the game options menu.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Gods & Kings version 1.0.1.705.

In this game, you will be playing as Boudicca, you possess Druidic Lore. You receive +1 Faith per city with an adjacent unimproved Forest. Bonus increases to +2 Faith in Cities with 3 or more adjacent unimproved Forest tiles.

You can train the Pictish Warrior, which replaces the Spearman. The Pictish Warrior is perfectly suited to early rushes as it can lay waste to an opponents' lands by quickly pillaging and moving within the same turn. Additionally, they earn Faith for each unit they kill, constantly advancing your religious goals while at war. You must discover the technology of Bronze Working and you do not need a resource to build it.

You can build the Ceilidh Hall, which replaces the Opera House. The Ceilidh Hall provides 3 Happiness and 4 Culture for your civilization. You must discover the technology of Acoustics and you need a Amphitheater in the city to build it.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Game In Progress thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play.

After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! , We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the two week period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after two weeks, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature)

This game runs for a month and ends Wednesday, 15 August 2012.

The Save can be found here.

Nice starting location, settle in place I suppose (though obviously move the warrior first).

I had been working at a king-level science victory game earlier. I wasn't quite finished (but I grew bored), but I had by far the tech lead in the game and wasn't running the risk of getting trampled by the AI anytime soon (Siamese elephants aren't very effective against bombers and modern infantry units...), so I have had some practice :) That was with koreans though, a much more obvious choice for a science victory.

I've been on a long Civ hiatus. I actually haven't played Civ 4 ever, I 'skipped' directly from Civ 3 to Civ 5 a while ago. I used to play the civ 3 GOTMS, good times :)

Welcome back, and good luck. :)

standard-sized Arborea mystery map

Arborea? What's that?

With the faith related bonuses, we should be able to found a religion pretty early and grab the good science attributes. The Ceilidh Hall is a bit interesting - it's quite a good UB, but a bit odd for a science game, where you wouldn't usually build opera houses. On the other hand, you need a lot more culture now to get to the 2 free techs, so it might be worth going for.

Arborea is one of the new map types with G&K. It is a world mostly covered in forests and can be Pangaea, Large Continents, Small Continents or Islands. Mystery just means the type of land mass is set to random, so we don't know which of the four types it will be. When the description says mostly covered in forests, basically it just means that where there would normally be a grassland or plains tile it now has a forest on it. It does have all the other types of tiles.

On this map type, you will need a scout fairly early because scouting with a warrior will be a lot slower due to all the forests.

I think I'll move the warrior to the wheat then the forested hill west of the wheat. Depending on what I see over there. Then I'll decide if I should settle in place or move.

With the wheat and deer it a granary will be needed asap if we want the city to grow.

One note about the Celtic UA. The unimproved forest tiles that gives the +1 or +2 faith per city have to be in the first ring.

If we settle in place, our UA will give us a pantheon in 5 turns.

I'm pretty sure I'll be picking "Goddess of the Hunt" (+1 food with camps), especially since Arborea maps have lots of deer. With the early granary Monthar mentioned, and three camp sites already in view, that means fast growth for Edinburgh. Perfect for a Tradition / Tall start.

:woohoo:

Thank you Leif :goodjob:

This.

Yes it does. I'm thinking Settle in place as well. I mean Wheat Plains and a Deer Forest is a great start. Combine this with Fur nearby and a hill. Seems like a solid capital start. Ill move to the Hill first to see whats over there.

Hmm, nice, I just started a game with Boudicca on a Arborea map on Prince. I always focus on science, but I wanted to explore religion more. I went with Goddess of the hunt, but looks like it will be even better on this map, for the capital at least.

This will be my first GotM. Can't wait to start playing it! Unfortunately steam is being a pain and is not updating my Civ V files with DLC I picked up from the sale this morning so I can't even start up the game yet.

I'm in! This will be literally my first true game of Civ 5, as my total experience consists of three demo playthroughs and the tutorial. Luckily the Celts are the demo civ, so I have at least a little understanding of how to play. I'm not really concerned with speed, as I think just surviving would be a personal accomplishment. Should be fun!

Welcome to CivFanatics and GOTM. :wavey:

Have fun and good luck.

I have been looking forward to this! It will be my first attempt at GOTM/TGS, so I am happy it's played at King, which is what I am most comfortable with :)

I have only tried the Celts once before, and then I ended the game with a truly ridiculous amount of faith/turn, so we'll see if it'll turn out the same way this time.

How can I open the file after it is downloaded, I have a mac.

While I don't have a mac, I Imagine its the same; you don't open the file, you drop it into your save location and load it from CiV.

As to the game, I am looking for to it, it looks pretty sweet. Trying to think if explosively expansion is good, it just seems hard to beat happiness early on.

One lux visible though is somewhat worrisome.
