One reason the issue is so thorny is that not everyone agrees on what might be considered offensive. That is the case even within Morality in Media, where Ms. Hawkins said people should also be careful with public viewings of violent content.

Some people choose to act as their own censor. “There’s a woman jogging behind me on the treadmill and I don’t want her to fall off,” he said. “I’m bringing my media into a public space, and it’s part of my responsibility in a civil society.”

Others fiercely defend the rights of people to watch whatever they want in public. “People said, ‘Just look away,’ ” she recalled. “Their argument is that people can do what they want. This is America.”

should watching porn in public be legal ?

I was in a Swiss Chalet (Canadian rotisserie chicken chain) with my mother last year and some old dude was watching porn on a laptop at the table next to us. I didn't do anything, but it was pretty damn gross. I was hoping the staff would notice but I don't think they did.

I would feel like a total failure if you didn't know my answer.

Illegal, but the penalties need to be proportionate to the content and situation. Bare breasts on a handheld device at the gym? Slap on the wrist. Explicit sex on a laptop in a public park with children all round? Jail time and a big fine.

My fear is that any time we criminalize some aspect of human sexuality we end up with hysterical overreactions like making 17-year-old boys register as sex offenders for streaking at a football game. (It happened at our high school last year.)

Define "in public." If it's on a library-supplied computer, definitely illegal. Peoples' tax money is partially funding such computers and should not be used for pornography. Of course, this is sometimes a difficult call to make if it's (for example) a university student doing a research project. However, in that case the student would be better advised to use a computer at the university, which is less accessible to the general public and underage children.

Reading or viewing in a public park? Tacky, but not illegal to my knowledge. In a restaurant? Should have brought it to the staff's attention; maybe the restaurant has rules about such things.

Of course, child pornography should be illegal EVERYWHERE.

This. Anybody who is watching explicit stuff on a laptop in a cafe, as shadowplay mentioned earlier, needs a good slap aroudn the face.

You really shouldn't have pornography in public, particularly not where children and prudes are likely to notice. Nudity is not pornography.

Really? Being predictable to CFCOT is that important?

People who watch porn have mental problems. Yes I have watched it in the past, and I consider that a mental problem that I was watching it. I was weak in my younger years.

It's better to go out and get the real thing. Watching fake intimacy is unhealthy. Getting social contact and getting the real thing is far more healthy (provided you use protection).

Just because porn screwed you up doesn't mean nobody can keep it in its place.

It didn't screw me up. I don't watch it, and I get more enjoyment out of sex because of it. Porn creates unrealistic expectations. There are men out there who can't have sex with their wives because of their porn habits.

I'm sorry to get a little off topic. But the fact that people even feel the need to watch porn in public shows what a problem it is.

Why would anyone need to watch porn in public? I don't get it.

If somebody feels the overbearing need to look at some Brazzers in a park, they're probably having some problems up in the head that should be checked out.

Illegal. People always scream that sex should be kept in the bedroom and the government should stay out, well god damn go do that then. The public park is not your bedroom. The plane is not your bedroom. The library is not your bedroom, etc.

Not to mention that people usually masturbate or get aroused when looking at porn. I don't think that there are many people out there who look at porn for the intellectually stimulating plotlines.

I was once in a library and as I was leaving, I saw this guy's laptop with ANAL SEX VIDEOS on the screen. It was weird but I don't see why that should be illegal.

Just because you're a nutter doesn't mean other people have the same problems.

I'm not one for censorship, but it seems like it should be illegal to me, less for the offensiveness of it and more for the fact that it is just not classy to watch it in public.

Jail time though? Really? You want tax dollars to go to housing these people?

Porn doesn't screw people's expectations up either, no more than seeing the bodies of underwear models or athletes, or listening to a talented singer or comedian. Anyone that is intimidated by porn is just intimidated by life.

No, that shows what a problem it is for them. The vast majority of porn-watchers are not screwed up.

A lot of commercial porn screws up virgins' expectations. It's not perfectly harmless.

Okay, fine. I see I only get insulted in this forum. I will not post here anymore.

I'm not crazy, but you guys see me as crazy so I will not post in off-topic anymore. But I may still post in other forums.

All you people do is insult me.

I'm not trying to insult you, I'm telling you to stop projecting your problems on other people.

That's what happens when you speak of personal opinions or personal truths as if they're universal truths. You might feel insulted, but I feel insulted when you said that watching porn means I have mental problems.

Nay. There are a raft of things that are legal they I simply don't do due to the inherent douchiness of it. I'm more than happy to generally attempt to function within the whole "society thing" we having going on, and selfishly offending others sensibilities is, in most cases, unnecessarily antisocial.
