Girl Faces Jail Time for Naming Rapists

Frustrated by what she felt was a lenient plea bargain for two teens who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting her and circulating pictures of the incident, a Louisville 17-year-old lashed out on Twitter.

“There you go, lock me up,” Savannah Dietrich tweeted, as she named the boys who she said sexually assaulted her. “I’m not protecting anyone that made my life a living Hell.”

Now, Dietrich is facing a potential jail sentence, as the attorneys for the boys have asked a Jefferson District Court judge to hold her in contempt because they say that in naming her attackers, she violated the confidentiality of a juvenile hearing and the court’s order not to speak of it.

However, as of Monday afternoon, the contempt request had been withdrawn after Dietrich's story was read around the world.

A contempt charge carries a potential sentence of up to 180 days in jail and a $500 fine.

So now the rights of rapists matter more than their victims? If they didn't want to be named, they shouldn't have raped her. Simple as that.

Either way, I thought juvenile rights ended after 16?
 
While it is a tragedy she was sexually assaulted, what she did was illegal. Minors have certain rights in court, notably confidentiality. By violating that she commited an illegal act, simple as that.

So you are in favor of violating court orders and confidentially when handling juvenile criminals?

The assaulters already plead guilty and would be punished, that she didn't feel satisfied does not mean it is legal for her to violate a court order.

In the absense of evidence suggesting the court mishandled the case, how is violating court orders with regards to juvenile confidentialy 'empowering women'?
Even if the court did mishandle the case and they were overly lenient, seek a redress through the courts. Not going public and violating court order. Unless the court order was criminal or there was a compelling public intrest to violate it, I don't see why one should be allowed to violate it on the grounds of disagreeing with a ruling.

NOTE: I would like to make it absolutely clear I am not defending the sexual assaulters, merely pointing out how the actions of the court is not as egregious or unfair as some of you seem to think.

1) Nobody claims that it is legal for someone to violate a court order
2) It hasn't been proved that she violated the court order
3) I don't care if it's legal or illegal, she should be allowed to tell her friends on twitter the names of the rapists who raped her

In these circumstances yes (but change the law brah). The criminal justice should remember that their priority is protecting the rights of the victims and not the rights of the criminals. Anyway these guys are adolescents not 7 year old boys, they knew what they were doing.

By posting it on Twitter she is publicly announcing it, which can be viewed as violating court order. I'm not sure how the UK juvenile justice system works, but in America, unless the juvenile is being tried as an adult the court proceedings remains confidential.

And? Under the Juvenile Justice system they are still entitled to confidentiality in the proceedings.
 
I don't really have enough information here to form an adequate opinion. Do we, collectively, believe the reformation of criminals, particularly young ones, is possible? If not, do we seek to incapacitate them for the remainder of their lives? If convicted as an adult of a sex crime, in the states at least, the sex offender database and registration system doesn't really go away.
 
Why do juvenile criminal have these rights to confidentiality? What purpose do they serve?

A balance? Your either for anonyminity or against it.
I'm not concerned with the legal aspects of this. "Violating the court order" means nothing to me. In fact i'm glad she is doing it, she has the right to tell the world about the scumbags who abused her.
