Code of Ethics:

All players are expected to adhere to the following code of ethics during play.

• Follow the Forum Rules of Civilization Fanatics Center.

• Refrain from taking and sharing screenshots relating to this mafia game during the duration of the game. This includes your Role PM, posts within the thread, QuickTopic posts, etc.

• Refrain from using a double login (an additional CFC account) for any aspect of this mafia game and restrict yourself to the identity used in signing up for the game for all communication relating to this game. Double logins are against the Forum Rules anyways, and they can be gamebreaking in a mafia game.

• If you have additional abilities as a moderator or administrator on the forum, please endeavor not to use those abilities to your advantage as part of your participation in a mafia game, save where asked to do so in response to a valid moderator-related question or function. I recognize that you can't turn off those features, and I don't think this has ever been a problem anyways.

• You are NOT allowed to privately communicate with your fellow players about this game, unless specifically told otherwise by the host.

• You are strictly forbidden from quoting any private communications from me. Paraphrase. (Yes, this includes Role PMs, too.)

• Follow the rules laid out by the host for this game.

• If you believe that yourself or a fellow player have accidentally (or purposely) contravened this code and/or broken one of the rules laid out by the host, report it to the host, attaching any relevant support information.

• Have fun. Winning is certainly an important objective, but the larger purpose of these games is to have fun. It's possible to have fun and lose. It's possible to have fun and win. It's possible to not have fun and win (etc.). Fun and victory are two different objectives. Try to achieve them both!

• Be active. I designed this game for a full roster of active players. Inactive players could upset the game's balance. Besides, what is the point of signing up for a game if you do not intend to participate?

Game Rules

Note: Due to the nature of this game, anything anyone tells you -- including and perhaps especially myself -- is unreliable and cannot necessarily be trusted. HOWEVER, I promise everything in the rules is reliable and trustworthy.

Setting:

Spoiler :
The Community.

This ambiguously located town is, once again, the setting of the game.

Story up to this point:

Zack Mafia I - Zack used the foreign invasion of the Community to deflect attention and suspicion onto the invading foreigners, while secretly killing off the Council members one by one. At the end of the game, all of the other Council members were dead, allowing Zack to seize dictatorial power.

Zack Mafia II - Zack re-establishes the Council, placing two of his minions within. Zack is soon killed, and his minions rooted out shortly thereafter. The Community returns to its pre-dictatorship state.

Zack Mafia III - A powerful necromancer brings Zack back from the dead and gives him a box. Zack goes back to the Council to once again seize power. However, he sees the errors of his ways when he looks into the box, and the necromancer kills Zack for his refusal to further the nefarious cause. The necromancer slaughters everyone else, then leaves.

Zack Mafia IV - This game is an alternate history, where Zack survived Zack Mafia III and succeeded in his quest to re-claim his dictatorial seat of power. Now, Zack has invited a bunch of people to his birthday celebration, for some festivities...

Team Victory Conditions:

Spoiler :
The game ends when one of the following conditions are met:

1. All enemies of the town are dead. This constitutes a Town Victory.

2. A faction achieves its goal of wiping out the town and any other enemies. This constitutes a Mafia Victory for that faction.

3. There may or may not be third-parties with their own victory conditions individual of those of #1 and #2.

Individual Victory Conditions:

Spoiler :
Now, a team's victory is easy to grade, but how are all of the individuals ranked? Well, I'm glad that I pretended you asked. Here's the breakdown (0 - 100 point scale):

Faction Victory: 60 points. Check the above spoiler. It is possible that some players may receive a percentage of a faction victory.

Rounds of Survival: 10 points. You gain more points towards a higher ranking for each round you live ("round" = 1 Day Phase or 1 Night Phase). You are counted as surviving the phase you die (e.g. the game starts on Day 1; if you are killed Night 1, that counts as 2 rounds of survival). [(rounds survived/total rounds)*10]

Participation: 10 points. You gain more points for voting in the thread. [(rounds voted / day phases of survival) * 10]

Bonus: 20 points. Each bonus award has a differing point value. There is no set limit to how many bonus awards an individual player can receive, but there is a limit of 20 points. The bonus awards are listed below (depending on how the game plays out, some may not be applicable):

Spoiler :
To the Bitter End, Level II: 15 points. Awarded to the player who was the sole survivor of the game.

Town MVP: 10 points. Awarded to the player belonging to the town who contributed the most to the town's efforts.

Non-Town MVP: 10 points. Awarded to the player not belonging to the town who contributed the most to their faction's efforts (mafia or third-party).

Outstanding Non-Town Effort: 7 points. Awarded to the player(s) not belonging to the town who contributed greatly to the their faction's efforts (mafia or third-party).

Outstanding Town Effort: 7 points. Awarded to the player(s) belonging to the town who contributed greatly to the town's efforts.

Dedicated Participant: 5 points. Awarded to the player(s) who voted every Day phase and sent in a night order every Night phase (if they had a night action) they were alive (minimum 5 phases survived).

Bane of the Scum: 5 points. Awarded to the player who kills the most non-town players (whether at night, or by the lynch, or both).

Takhisis Award, Level II: 3 points. Awarded to the player who finishes the game with the most non-spam posts.

johnhughthom Award, Level II: 3 points. Awarded to the most entertaining player, by the host's discretion.

johnhughthom Award: 1 point. Awarded to other entertaining players, by the host's discretion.

To the Bitter End: 1 point. Awarded to the players who survived to the end of the game.

Takhisis Award: 1 point. Awarded to the player(s) who finished the game with a notably high number of posts and/or more posts than the host.

I reserve the right to create more bonus awards after the game has ended.

Game Phases and Basic Gameplay:

Spoiler :
Before play begins, roles will be randomly assigned to all players. Then, each player will receive a Role PM detailing the specifics of their role. Most players will be vanilla townies.

Phase Rotation: For the most part, the usual sequence of 48-hour days and 24-hour nights will be followed. Unless otherwise noted, the deadline for all phases is at 3:00 PM US Central Standard Time.

The host reserves the right to extend the deadline of a phase for any reason, whether it be personal or due to a lack of player activity. There are no abilities with the capability of affecting deadlines.

Day Phase: Each day, every player is expected to vote for a suspect from among the list of players. Each player can cast one vote (see below for procedure). There may or may not be players with tally/lynch-affecting capabilities. The host will write up the results of these votes and post them for general consumption, along with any juicy particulars about any executions. The game then proceeds to the night phase.

Certain traits or roles may allow for a specific daytime action. Any such abilities will be explained accordingly in the individual's Role PM.

Night Phase: Some players have night actions they can perform some or every night. These players are expected to send a PM to the host detailing which action(s) they wish to take. The game host will calculate these actions, then write the update in the thread, then send individual night results to players.

If a player dies during any phase, their role name, if any, and faction will be revealed immediately therafter.

Lynch Voting:

Spoiler :
During the Day phase, players are expected to vote to lynch another player. You may vote or not vote at your discretion; however, there is a penalty for not doing so.*

*Failing to vote four rounds total will result in that player suffering the Wrath of God. I may replace inactive players at my own discretion.

Lynch Choices:

1. Voting for a fellow player - alive, dead, the host, whatever. This indicates your desire for that player to die that day.
2. Voting "Abstain". This indicates you have no official preference for the outcome of the day's lynch (or lack thereof).
3. Voting "No Lynch". This indicates your desire for no players to die that day.

To be counted, a vote MUST be posted in bold typeface. Anything else, such as dressing it up with a "Vote:" preface or styling it in an accusation, is unnecessary.

If you desire to change your vote, simply vote for another player or choice.

A retraction without a re-vote will count as an "abstain" by default, as will any invalid vote (such as editing a post containing a vote).

If you abbreviate the name of the person for whom you are voting, please do so in a clear and consistent fashion. If I can't figure it out, I will count it as invalid.

These votes are, of course, part of the public discussion in the thread and available for all to evaluate. However, there is a possibility for apparent discrepancies in the public tally and the "real" tally.

Playing While Dead:

Spoiler :
You are encouraged to keep playing and participating once your character has died, whether you desire to try and contribute to your faction's victory in any way you can, or just be silly and mess with people.

Restrictions:

1. The dead may post in the public game thread; however, they are cannot vote, select, or carry out any night actions of any kind, unless the host specifies otherwise.

2. Dead players may not reveal any specifics concerning their role, family, or faction at any time, unless the host specifies otherwise.

3. Dead players may not quote or reference any host-sanctioned private communications they had with the host or with other players, unless the host specifies otherwise.

4. Dead players may not reveal, recount or allude to their previous night actions (or results thereof in the case of investigations) publicly or privately – even to confirm a previously made public or private reveal, unless the host specifies otherwise.

5. Dead players may not communicate privately with any living players, unless (you guessed it) the host specifies otherwise.

PLEASE BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS! :)

This will serve as the master set of rules for this game. If you have any questions or comments, ask away.

My first game of Zack Mafia, but looking forward to playing it. Read the last 3 and they all were very well done. Can't wait to start!

Night 0

Zack strode into the room to meet all 34 of his guests. "Hello, everyone! Welcome to my fabulous party! I sincerely hope you are alive by the end of it. Before we get started, I have some good news, and some bad news.

"First, the bad news. I just lost a bunch of money due to copyright infringement for stealing Geico's joke.

"The good news. *mumblemumble* died last night! GASP! Now all of you have to try and find the murderer!"

The party guests were confused.

"Wait, how do we know there's only one murderer?"

"Who died? I didn't catch that."

Before we deal with that, let's start with a more lighthearted matter. Today, vote for someone to eat this delicious, freshly baked pie in purple. Vote for someone else to eat this disgusting old cabbage in green.

Verarde can have the Cabbage.
I'll take the pie. :smug:

Voting Zack early? Seriously?

Even if he is scum, wouldn't it be better to wait and see the plot unfold.

Xenoneb can have the cabbage. BSmith1068 can have the pie.

atheotes gets pie, while Joecoolyo gets the cabbage

That was trippy. For a minute there I thought it said 18 days. :mischief:

This cabbage must be healthy, so I, topsecret, will take it.
BSmith can have that pie, it must be a lie. (Along with any cake... :mischief:)
