Charlemagne of the Holy Roman Empire

There can be only one! ....city. And this time that city will belong to Holy Roman Empire.

Welcome to the 1st edition of Even More OCC series. Here we play OCC games with varying options, one leader (and one city) at a time. Bullpen for the series is here and from there you can find previous games as well as the current one.

I promised to start with a not-so-good OCC leader so I ended up with Charly. His traits are literally trashy since PRO is something you don't want to be using and in OCC you can't build cheap IMP settlers. Holy Roman uniques are even worse as Landsknecht is only good in defending (which you usually don't want to do) and the effect of Rathaus is zero unless some corporations are involved. This leaves us with increased Great General emergence from IMP trait so I'd like to see some wars in the game. However, as this is the first game of the series, I will leave all victory conditions open and just encourage players to try a military OCC game.

To not make it too simple, I chose a map type in which you need Astro to wage war. Your rear is pretty secure but you can't just go rolling with HAs from the start here. Water level is normal and only one extra AI is added, so those Noble AIs should have plenty of room to expand.

Without further ado, below you can find the necessary information in a nutshell as well as the save file. Go and show that even one of the worst OCC leaders can conquer the world! :king:

Our leader:

Name: Charlemagne
Civilization: Holy Roman Empire
Traits: PRO/IMP
Starting techs: Hunting and Mysticism
Unique unit: Landsknecht (Pikeman with added bonus of 100% vs melee units)
Unique building: Rathaus (Courthouse with 75% reduced maintenance)

Game settings:

Difficulty: Noble
Victory conditions: Everything goes but military victory is preferred.
Map type: Continents, toroidal wrap (should give 4 continents).
Map size: Standard
Number of AIs: 7
Speed: Normal
Options: No huts or events.

For military victory in OCC continents map you obviously need coastal access. Now where could we find one?
Spoiler :
I'd follow river to find the sea but the best option here would probably be...
Spoiler :
...heading 2SW to settle on dry rice. There's one problem with that spot, though, as it lacks...
Spoiler :
...copper, horses, iron and most other strategic resources. Nevertheless, double gold with bunch of other nice tiles should compensate that. ;)

Save file:

For BUFFY users: EMO #1 - Charlemagne
Or if you're having problems with BUFFY: EMO #1 - Charlemagne (no mods)

You can download BUFFY here if you don't already have it.

Reporting guidelines:

Finally, I'd like to give some guidelines for reporting about your games:

  • What were your first 3-4 builds and techs?
  • What early wonders did you build?
  • When did you get Academy/CS/Oxford/National Park/Apollo?
  • When did you get Astro?
  • When did you start warring and what units did you use?

Remember that you can tell about your games any way you like, these are just things that usually interest other players. Please use spoiler tags when you post something spoilerish.

Happy hunting! :ar15:

Protective leader without fishing and mysticism as a starting tech made me immediately think of Crossbow rush with Oracle somewhere in there. Having to download and install BUFFY when I already use BUG + BULL for the same functionality is a PITA, though.

Umm well there is a very simple way to do this. There are these magical units called horse archers. You can conquer the world with them.

Looks like a terrible start for OCC with a terrible leader for OCC. That said, at noble it's still probably doable, right?

Leader sure is terrible but the start is actually pretty nice if you move as suggested in spoilers below the screenshot. And yes, it's very doable as noble gives you huge tech lead if you need one. ;)

Unless it's continents, triple Z :D

It doesn't matter it's Noble. You could kill off everyone on yours, and by the time you get to Astro you can go over, and finish the job. The AI on Noble has no advantage at all. Waaaiit this isn't a coastal start it has to be a pangaea. Oh man I just read the spoilers..... Wow there is no real "difficulty" in this only things to slow you down.

Can you provide a save without mods? I tried installing buffy, but this crashes, maybe because I have BUG installed in the game directory?

Sorry but I'm too lazy to provide anything more but the BUFFY save. According to BUFFY faq it should help if you rename your customassets folder. Hopefully it works as it's good to have BUFFY around to be able to enjoy all those BOTMs here. ;)

Sorry, but I personally an too lazy to bother with Buffy. Would guess I am not the only one on taht sort of laziness in this particular forum.
Well, I just happen to like it when I can just download a savefile and start to play without opening all sorts of packages to find the correct save, adding some stuff to barbs, choosing the options I like and such. I kind of like the XOTM style here. ;)

Funny thing that most people posting here seem to be more interested in mods that are used rather than the game itself. I don't see it as a too big strain to download and install BUFFY once as after that everything should be smooth and easy. Besides, once you have done that you can also take part in BOTMs and SGOTMs here in the forums.

FYI peeps, there is already an OCC club and it's fairly new http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=463843&highlight=occ+club

As far as I see, the latest post in OCCC threads is one month old already so I consider that not-so-active at the moment. There have been 3 versions of that club before and I really loved the second installment hosted by cas as it was pretty similar to what I'm trying to do here. Too bad it ended after 3 games for some reason.

This series is basically a OCC club in the way I would have done it.

I mean, that a provided (world builder) save cannot be easily altered in difficulty level because of initial AI bonuses like archers, techs, etc., so you have to go into the file to add these.

I thought that buffy might help there because of your comment:

If it doesn't help there, I really don't see the point of forcing a specific mod.

Actually it would have been nice if Civ had somehow defined "interface mods" that don't alter gameplay and don't affect savegames...

Yes, that's what my comment was about but unfortunately BUFFY doesn't help with that issue. In this series I want people to play the game on the same difficulty level for comparison purposes and that's why I want to provide only one save file instead of world builder save or such. BUFFY comes to the picture because I used to play BOTMs and it's mandatory in those games. I've never needed to use other mods. Since many people play those BOTMs and SGOTMs, I thought that it shouldn't be too uncommon to have it installed already.

OCC on noble continents seems doable. HRE and charlemagne has military traits so only ways to win will probably be by eliminating all rivals.

Conquest in 1804ad. Military OCC can take some time, even though it's on Noble. :D
Spoiler :

Settled 2SW on rice.

Starting techs: Fishing -> AH -> Wheel -> Mining -> Pottery.
Starting builds: Warrior (partly) -> WB -> Worker -> Warrior (finished) -> Warriors -> Granary.

Interesting milestones:

CS (Oracled) - 1520bc
Academy - 1120bc
Great Library - 700bc
Oxford - 125ad
Astro - 325ad

Military actions started with building some trebs, upgrading them to cannons (bought very expensive iron from Kublai for 10 turns) and heading for Monty with some grens + cannons. DoWed Monty in 1090ad which was delayed because I couldn't yet build HE. Then took out Wang Kon while starting to transfer troops to Celtic lands. Transferred some troops to Portugal while warring with Brennus and then DoWed to both Joao and Kublai around the same time. Mao and Churchill were the last AIs alive and both capitulated in 1804ad when they were down in 1-2 cities. Didn't upgrade many units because transferring them back to Aachen would have taken too much time. After grens I built rifles, then artilleries and finally infantry in the end. Lost maybe dozen units during the game and most of them were in galleons surprised by enemy caravel army.

I prefer BUG and have never got BUFFY to work with it, pity because I love OCC :-(
