Sarah Silverman PSA

Who is this woman?

Is that her real voice or did they pump helium in? If you close your eyes, you'd think this was a PSA from that grody baby in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

ID is required here to vote, and I imagine the same is true for virtually every nation. Does someone who fails to produce an ID deserve to vote?

Yes, they do.

In my barrio it was only $25 to get one at the state DMV.

Definitely.

I don't need ID to vote. In the last election, I even turned up without my polling card and was able to vote without a hitch. (Then again, you do need to be on the electoral register to be legally able to vote in the first place.)

Yes, they do.

Yes they do

Definitely.

To each his own I guess. I'm perfectly fine with my country requiring ID to vote, and nobody here would even dream of abolishing this common sense requirement.

And lo and behold, this requirement has not resulted in disenfranchisement, and is a total non-issue. This woman seems to be implying that blacks, old people and students are all imbeciles. The Brazilian ones seem perfectly capable of producing an ID to vote.

And that my friend is a poll tax. Kinda unconstitutional.
Look, if you are on government welfare it's only $7 and it's good for six years. The ID isn't for voting, it's a general purpose ID.

A $7 poll tax is still illegal.

That's the most total bullcrap lie in this entire issue. Not one person who is opposing voter suppression thinks these people are too dumb to get an ID. They know that it simply isn't as easy as people like to claim that it is.

It's not easy?
Isn't a drivers license accepted? Or some other form of multi-purpose ID?

But it's only mildly unconstitutional!

11 million people who are legal to vote do not have those IDs, have no reason to have those IDs other than the voting law, and those IDs are not that easy to get.

In most places, it is the fact that you are on the voting roll that allows you to vote. You give your name, they check it off - mission accomplished. Why fix something that isn't broken?

A drivers license is ridiculously easy to get in the US. Seems like a non-issue, really.

Seems easy to fraud. If someone knows your name and voting zone and go vote before you, what's preventing that?
Maybe you could take a middle route like some countries, where a personal notification is sent before the vote, and person can present either that or the ID.
In most countries an ID is required, though.

But as I said, to each his own. If fraud incidence is very low, good. I just don't see the outrage, and I think the message that this would disproportionately affect some groups a bit insulting towards those groups. Voter ID requirement is a good thing, and if too many people don't have IDs maybe it should be implemented slowly, but it's fundamentally good.
