The Nobles' Club series started out as a way for Noble-level (and below) players to improve their game. Most of the original participants now play at much higher levels, so this has become a way for advanced players to help others learn to play better. You can play your own game at any level and with any mod, but it would be nice to comment on the games of other players and give them advice.

Our next leader is Qin Shi Huang of China, whom we last played in NC XLII. We last played the Chinese in NC XCIII. The Chinese start with Agriculture and Mining.

IND means 50% wonder production -- wonderspam time! PRO means archers and gunpowder units start with CG I and Drill I, so you can protect yourself while wonderspamming.

His UB: the Pavilion, a Theatre that gives an extra 25%:culture:.

His UU: the Cho-Ko-Nu, a souped-up crossbow with a second first strike that does collateral damage like seige engines. If you have iron and get to Machinery fast enough, drill-promoted Cho-Ko-Nus might make decent attack units.

Spoiler map details :
Hemispheres, 3 continents, normal islands[/URL]

Spoiler edits :
Swapped a couple of resources, added a couple of AIs so that no one should be too dominant.

Finally, a cut and paste of our standard doctrine:

The WB-saves are attached (zipped; they are bigger than standard saves). To play, simply download and unzip it into your BTS/Saves/WorldBuilder folder. Start the game, and load your favorite MOD (if you use one, if not, check out the BUG MOD), select "Play Scenario", and look for "NC number Leader Noble" (or Monarch, etc., for higher levels). You can play with your favorite MOD at the Level and Speed of your choice. From Quick-Warlord to Marathon-Deity, all are welcome! We stuck with the name "Nobles Club" because it has a cool ring to it.

Spoiler what's up with specific difficulties :
In each scenario file you can select your level of difficulty, but that doesn't give the AI the right bonus techs by itself. Use the Noble save for all levels at and below Noble. The Monarch save gives all the AI Archery. Emperor adds Hunting; Immortal adds Agriculture; Deity adds The Wheel.

For players on Monarch or above, you should add archery as a tech for the barbarians (if you don't, the AI will capture their cities very early). This cannot be done in the WB save file and must be done in Worldbuilder as follows:
Spoiler how to add techs to the barbarians :
  1. Zoom in all the way so you can't see the rest of the map.
  2. Use the CTRL-W key (or the menu) to enter the worldbuilder. Avoid looking at the mini-map in the lower right corner.
  3. By default you're in "player" mode (look in the box in the upper right; the icon that looks like a person should be selected). You'll get a drop down menu labeled with your leader's name. Barbarians are at the bottom, so cover the rest of the list with your hand if you don't want to see who else is on the map. Select "Barbarians".
  4. Select the "Technologies" tab in the box on the left.
  5. Find Archery (the arrow head icon; 8th row, 3rd column from the right) and click it.
  6. Exit the worldbuilder.
  7. Zoom out again after the map fades, and start playing.

Spoiler huts and events :
Note: The normal saves have no huts and have events turned off. If you want tribal villages and random events, choose the saves with 'Huts' in their names. If you want huts but no events, select the Huts saves and use Custom Scenario to turn on the option that suppresses events.

Holy Mandate of Heaven, Batman, that's a fantastic capital. Warrior 1W probably to see if it's worth moving inland, but SIP is pretty insane and won't slow down basically ever.

I may LP this one. Trying to setup recording on my new machine. Such a pain

I would be interested in watching that. Nice to watch other players strategies and styles. Also will play this weekend, probably SIP, nice start.

To 1050 AD, Monarch, normal everything:

Spoiler :
Not just a great capital, but some very nice land to the west as well. Production is very powerful on this map.

So I grabbed the Oracle for MC, built the 'Mids in Beijing, and got Machinery in 200 BC--which felt really slow. Should've avoided Stonehenge; my first GP was a Prophet out of Shanghai. But it didn't matter much; I still had a massive Chukonu army and put a hurtin' on Wang. Wang's booted off the continent, and Darius is down to 4 cities. For some reason, neither one has teched Feudalism (Darius is teching Civil Service right now because I guess he thinks Maces will stop me? I dunno.), so I could in theory load a bunch of 'phants onto Galleys and take the fight to Wang, but the plan is to just do it as a diversion when the intercontinental invasion begins. I should get Lib, but I don't know what to put it off for without knowing the map's real heavyweights; Steel or Astronomy would probably be best, I think. The plan is to upgrade my Drill 80 Chukos to Rifles and stomp the world.

Fun map! I've never really used Chukos much and certainly haven't tried a bulb like this, so I was surprised at how powerful their collateral damage is. Very, very neat.

Glad you are enjoying it, I regenerated quite a few times until I got a good start as I wanted a map where people could turtle and build Wonders if they wanted (seems logical for IND / PRO). Looks like that's not the route you're going

A culture victory would've been super-easy, but I just did that with SoM's latest game with Asoka. Rollicking repeating crossbow fury is so much more fun. I'm actually looking forward to the inevitable intercontinental invasion with this force at my back. ;)

Like tommah said, the immortal no huts save still has events. Something about this seems a little too rigged

Spoiler :
such a good capital with both stone and marble nearby for an industrious leader? I'm snoozing my way to a culture win and the same SSE capital would have also made crushing the continent fairly mindless (i just hate having to do large scale naval invasions to get a military victory, hence culture).

Apologies - fixed the Immortal No Huts save and uploaded new file.

The marble was one of the edits I did to move it closer, wanted people to make be able to make good use of Qin's traits but perhaps that was too much??

on the start: [edit: haven't opened the start yet] if the warrior doesn't reveal anything, do we want to settle 1E to enable ocean trade routes and the buildings/wonders, or better to SIP for only 2 water tiles? Will be a while before the city outgrows its land tiles+clam.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say here. SIP is already coastal. Settling 1E really makes no sense. If anything, settling 1W might be good for a bonkers production city with 7 hills, but SIP is probably the best option here as it is still very solid and has the center tile bonus. Also, I see Fishing as a low priority early unless hellbent on GLH.

I guess 'too much' is subjective, but for anybody who wants to abuse it, things become pretty easy.

Spoiler :
Considering that there is a second source of marble on an island that also has seafood within the BFC, it might have been more interesting to force the player to use that one. Then you have to either sacrifice expansion towards your neighbours for early access, or wait longer. In any case even on immortal I got the marble wonders I wanted while still waiting for a second border pop just to get the one on the continent. Maybe that was RNG luck, but with a religious lovefest going on my continent it made this game feel like emperor or lower on immortal.

First game on emperor! I know I've made a number of mistakes already while going for the CKN rush.

1AD status report, looking for feedback

Spoiler :

SIP. Research went AH->BW->Mas->Wheel->Pottery->Myst->Writing->IW->MC
Builds went Worker->some warriors to size 4->settler->worker->MIDS. Yes, super early mids, which I got in 1720 BC (before stonehenge was even built lol). That gave me early GE GPP. I ended up building Great Wall for fail gold in the meantime, and expanded out to 5 cities. I messed up by avoiding fishing while trying to grab the GE, thinking that I had to avoid it to be able to bulb machinery (That's the case if you want to use a GS, not a GE). I did get a GE in 425 BC, and bulbed machinery in 350BC. Made my way to alpha, where I've since made some trades. I'm working to currency to help keep the economy afloat.

I really rushed to Machinery, and Darius is already at 8 cities, so I feel like I'm committed to a CKN rush. Additionally, I'm starting to get cottages online to fund things, and with currency coming in soon, my economy should be ok.

I'm putting a hold on peaceful expansion for the time being. The only exception would be one city up north to grab the crabs and beavers, but to be honest I'm not used to the maintenance issues, so not sure. I also know that my cities are very spaced out, which I think is contributing to me feeling a crunch due to the increased city maintenance

Feedback appreciated. I think it may have been a mistake to rush to masonry and build the mids as quickly as I did. Also, slowteching IW & MC took forrrevverr. On the other hand, I do have CKN available at a good date. Thoughts?
