Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 49
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the forty-ninth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of new features in Civilization 5 Gods & Kings to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these new features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

In this game, the designated VC is Culture. You may win by any VC you wish, as all VC's are enabled, but the results will be posted with fastest finish by Culture victory and then all other VC listed below by fastest time.

In this game you will play as Gustavus Adolphus and lead The Swedish Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized mystery map played at Emperor difficulty and at standard pace. Culture victory is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until January 1st to complete the game and submit.

Sorry to say that our Mac players are a patch behind again. :(

Please note that you are only allowed to build Oxford University one time. In addition, once you receive your two free techs from Rationalism, and should you switch to Piety, you may not switch back to Rationalism to gain an additional two free techs. :nono:

Civ V G&K - TSG49 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: Gustavus Adolphus - Sweden
Number of AI Opponents: 5
Number of City-States: 20
Map type: Mystery
Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: Emperor
Game pace: Standard
Game options: Promotion saving is enabled. Quick Combat is disabled (You may now turn it on using the game options menu.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Gods & Kings version 1.0.2.21. There is no dlc in this game.

In this game, you will be playing as Gustavus Adolphus, you possess Nobel Prize. You gain 90 Influence with a Great Person gift to a City-State. When declaring friendship, Sweden and their friend gain a +10% boost to Great Person generation.

You can train the Hakkapeliitta, which replaces the Lancer. The Hakkapeliitta specializes in working with Great Generals. If it starts a turn stacked with a Great General, the Great General receives the movement allowance of the Hakkapeliitta. In addition, the Hakkapeliitta receives a 15% combat bonus when stacked with a Great General. You need to discover the technology of Metallurgy and you need a Horse resource to build it.

You can also train the Carolean, which replaces the Rifleman. The Carolean is a strong, front-line unit that specializes in long marches, even far from home. Caroleans are the backbone of the Industrial era Swedish army. They start with the March promotion that allows it to heal every turn, even when performing an action. You need to discover the technology of Rifling and you do not need a resource to build it.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Game In Progress thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots and videos.

After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! , We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the two week period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after two weeks, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature)

This game runs for a month and ends Tuesday, 1 January 2013.

The Save can be found here.

I will play this.
However for sweden, diplo would be more fitting.
He do not have many advantage for Cult VC.

Setting to the wine seems obvious, but scouting with the warr may change it.

Perhaps more fitting, should we always set up games that play to a civ's strengths? Seems more can be learned by playing the game in another, less obvious, direction?

with only 5 AI players on a standard map, there is probably enough room to make a lot of friends and produce great artists in a rate similar to Babylons for GSs.
i will send the warrior to the flood plains in the south to check if the area would make for a nice petra city and, if not, move the settler to the east to grab more land tiles

Can't see Gustav spending his GPs on alliances during a diplo game either. His trait is probably war.

Hm, generating GA faster is good for CV, for some reason, I always forget that.
And yes, I think Civ should be able to play their strentgh in GOTMs, like Isabella was.

I was looking forward to a Swedish Cultural game! (I think Diplomacy VC would have been too predictable).

It's a shame there are so few AI's on this map though. Would have been nice to utilize Gustavus' special more. Then again, it does mean that the other AI's have more room to expand (while you have the issue of staying small to decrease SP cost) so maybe that will make things more challenging?

Guess we disagree here. Sometimes, we should play away from the strengths imnsho. Next time we can make Sweden a diplo game. :)

oh the humanity.. cultural VC with such wonderful UU.. :p
i just finished an epic large game with Gustav.. the Caroleans are beastly.

I will play this, although I have never played on Emperor and only once on King. I won't worry too much about time and hope only to win.

Gifting GPs to cultural CSs and 10% GP generation boost per DOF. I can see doing Sweden for cultural.

I never worry too much about time and just play to win. Thanks for the game, looking forward to it.

You make war on land and sea for max GPs then you gift them to the CS you want to ally with. You can make culture this way.

Sure, it works. Question is: how many artists are you ready to sacrifice for that cause. If you get 5 extra generals you won't get 5 extra artists you could get otherwise. Which sounds like a terribly slow progression. Extra % from DoF seems really strong though.

How about 1 per Cultural CS to start with? 1GP = 1 alliance pretty much. Are Generals and Admirals on the same schedule as regular GP? I didnt think generating a general made your next artist take longer.

There are free generals and admirals in the policy tree and in Brandenburg Gate if you need them at that point.

Papal primacy + pledge to protect + the second cuture policy in patronage= 45 base interest with citystates! It only takes 60 to be allies. A few gifted great generals and great admirals really go a long way with a head start in interest. A long, drawn out war with one civ should help gametime a lot. Probably no real reason to take cities o make peace though.
