We've all had 'em...

You know, those moments where bad fortune awaits you and you civ life is over as you know it; those "oh sh*t!" moments where your inner-most civ fears are realized...

Let's share stories shall we?

My first is where I saw the first armor unit of the game and it was NOT on my side. I was playing the Mac (windows) version and I saw that scarey unit appraching my cities. It didn't help that I still had phalanxes. Even now (11 years later) the armor unit is the most intimidating unit of any game and it still sends shivers up my spine when I see one that's a different color than mine.

Well I would say a nuke with a different colour attacks one of your cities should be the scariest moment fortunately I develop so fast that in none of my games the AI ever get close to the nukes :D
I always freak out when artillery or tanks different nations moves to my cities while my army is elsewhere conquering. I hate when I get caught unprepared well I think this is the difficulty real generals have to fight with: get attacked at time while your army is somewhere else.

Mine is similar. Playing on earth as the Chinese. Spent ages and ages fighting all the other mainland civs, finally had them subdued if not defeated, and had built many forts stacked with my wonderful new knight units in the west as a sort of great wall to keep out the barbarians.

...then the first transport full of Aztec armor appeared from the darkness of the eastern sea...

Well, my beautiful capital looked out into the ocean, and if I remember, the Colossus and a couple of othere wonders looked over the harbor.

The Apollo spacecraft sat on its launchpad, waiting for its last part.

All of a sudden, a Babylonian transport appeared on the horizon.
"No problem," thought Irish Caesar, "My city is so well defended that nothing can defeat it."

Sadly, out of the sky came a single nuclear missile.

I think you know the rest of this story.

Well yes I would also imagine a nuke flying to your cities would be the most scaring moment BUT there is an easy solution:
Nuke them before they nuke you. In my games the Civs aren't so much advanced and often I fight with armors and planes against musketeers and cannons, hey it's really funny to race from one victory to another.
I think the AI have more to fear from me than I from them :)

My scariest moment ever was the first time I ever played any version of Civ, and it happened to be 1 on my Nintendo. My spaceship had almost reached Alpha Centauri when the Mongols nuked my capitol city and landed cavalry from a transport right beside it, sacking the city.

Several turns later, I was able to retaliate with a few of my own nukes, but many many more flew back towards me...

Some very scary moments used to happen rather late in the game:

"Gosh! It's 4 AM!"

when i was Babylon and i still had warriors fortified inside and barbarian musketeers landed on the Arabian Coast.... and all i had to do was conquer the Aztecs...

One time I was playing on the Earth map, I had founded my first city, built a Barracks, and was about to finish a Phalanx when out of the regions of the unknown came a lone barbarian Cavalry unit...

I had a game on Earth... my first time playing King I think, and I had taken control N. and S. America.

I was sitting pretty, being nice and isolated... staying out of the rest of the world... when transports full of armors started landing in S. America!

Ok, I though it was all over.

Fortunetly, I was able to recapture a city, steal mobile warfare and counter with some tanks of my own. It was a LONG hard fight, but I was able to get 'em off my territory and establish a nice defensive force.

Then I proceeded to conquer Asia, just for revenge. :)

But yeah, armors were the scariest thing in the whole world... esspecially if you didn't have one.

Oh, I also lost a vet battleship to a settler unit... DARN the days before hitpoints! :)

My scariest civ moment was the first time the AI nuked me. I was fighting an exhausting war against the French. Finally I was getting an upper hand because of my new:blush: military technologies, cannons and musketeers. Then suddenly some Aztec tanks appeared out of nowhere and then Montezuma nuked my most productive city:eek:. I didn't even know that the AI was able to use nukes before then. Montezuma demanded an outrageous amount of money. Knowing how efficient I use nukes, I was too terrified to refuse.

One of the first few games, I was plsying as the Aztecs, had beaten up the americans and set myself up a nice little empire in the Americas. Even getting to pounce on the French when they got defeated in Euorpe and kicked to SAmerica (scored the Hanging Gardens too!) So there I am doing well (so I thought) and was replacing my phalanxes w/musketeers and what happenes next? 2 full transports (and more reinforcements later) of Zulu tanks who crush my badly defended cites

Common theme in this thread, isn't it? THat started my Zulu grudge - if they were around I'd gun right for them first in wars, just so it wouldn't happen again! But I've made peace with my inner Zulu in Civ3 - the highest score in my hall of fame is a conquest victory with good ol' Shaka @ 7777 points :crazyeye:

I love how most of these posts have something to do with armors and nukes.

Another one for me was fighting the Spanish... I was moving along nicely, then they started raining nukes down on the front lines.

Oh man, that grinded my assult to a halt in a big hurry. Sigh.

I'm always so afraid of nukes, it's the massive destruction and pollution... I just couldn't bring myself to do it!

one of my first game I stop research wiith gunpowder and Thought I did not need to research Philosophy. most of my town were on the coast .I was playing the french have defeted the mongol and american and rome was far away .untill they came with cruser and kiled all the solder in the city .all the city were in disorder . I did not use temple or wonder or enterteneur or luxury rate just a lot of soldier in depostism . after some time I Capture there capital and the roman split to 2

I have 2 candidates

Number one was when a bomber came and attacked my capital, one unit killed, no big problem. But then due to a game glitch 20 (yes I counted) 20 diplomats came out from under the bomber and sabotage almost every building in my captial city. One of those throw the PC out the window moments!

Number two I was on the west side of a continent with maybe 4 other civs. We proceeded to pummel each other taking and retaking cities. I'd just completed the conquest of one section and was resting. When out of the west came the French with aircraft carriers, tanks, artillery you name it. My poor musketeers were toast!

Well, I was fighting a war on two fronts, against the Romans and the Zulu, (I was German) and I had taken every guy out of one city except a Mech. Inf. and put them on a transport, and the Romans landed their 'attack' force of two chariots right next to my city. I wasn't scared, but somehow, I don't know how, they defeated my Mech. Inf. with the second chariot and stole Automobile from the science list.

Guess what happened next? Romans give it to Zulu, and they start building the good ol armors.

I always seem to flub a few times early in the game. When the barbarians crashing down my door, angels weep.

When they take a city. That's the worst.
