Ok, so here's the challenge.

I'm tearing my hair out due to my inability to post pictures on CFC. I appreciate the attempts by Camikaze and Formaldehyde to teach me but I simply can't do it. (you guys are welcome to enter of course)

First person to come up with instructions that work gets a case of beer (I feel this is a universal enough currency to kick start proceedings, if you don't drink beer I'm flexible).

I want to be able to post pictures from the net, e-mails etc

I have an i pad, that's it. It's an old one.

You will need to seriously dumb it down to take the prize. See how seriously is bolded? That was a big achievement for me, just learning how to put stuff in bold. You're gonna have to earn your beer.

How will you get paid? I dunno yet, but you'll get paid I assure you. Judges decision (me) is final but this is a legitimate offer. I look forward to your answers.

HERP DERP nevermind.

Hmm. Haven't used an iPad much before, but I'm guessing it works similarly to an iPod (which I don't have, but can kinda remember how to use). Might be easiest to work backwards.

To post a picture on CFC, you use the [img][/img] tags, and put the URL of the image between the
. Alternatively, when you're in the reply box (that is, the box at the bottom of the page in which you type your reply, six buttons to the right of the bold button), you can click the yellowish button with what looks like two mountains in it, and paste the URL directly into that.

As an example, let's use your avatar. The URL is http://forums.civfanatics.com/image.php?u=177619 and you just have to put that inside the aforementioned tags.

[img]http://forums.civfanatics.com/image.php?u=177619[/img]

This gives the following:
image.php

But how do you get the URL? From a computer this is pretty easy. You right click on an image and select 'open image in new tab', or whatever similar option your browser gives you (I think in Firefox on Windows you might have to just select 'copy this link' or something). Then the image will be in a new tab, and you just have to copy what's in the address bar.

If you're on an iPad, I'm fairly sure you emulate this by tapping and holding (assuming you're using Safari, which would be the default browser). That is, you tap on the picture, and hold until a menu comes up, and one of the options should be to open the image in a new window or tab. The URL will again be in the address bar, and you can copy this by again tapping and holding (I think). You might want to try this with your avatar.

The main point to remember is that you need the image URL, not the URL of the page that the image is on. So if you're looking at a news article that has a picture you want to post, don't take the URL of the news article, but rather open up the image in a tab of its own and take its individual URL.

I'll get to email in a minute, but I'm a little busy at the moment getting slightly drunk on the Laphroaig you sent me.

See it's technical questions like this that are destined to leave you very thirsty my friend. However a quick google of what "browser" means leads me to suspect the answer is Safari?

Yes it is and I really should have guessed that from reading the iPad bit. :wallbash: Anyway, I think Cami has got it.

Ok Cami I'm with you until the tapping and holding to get the menu offering to open the image in a new tab. I'm not getting that option. If I hold my finger down I get "copy" or " save" as options while tapping does nothing. You realize though that you can be usurped by another poster filling in the last piece of the puzzle and claiming the prize?

Your parents are gonna think I'm the worlds worst bloke corrupting their educated son with whiskey and beer if you win this. This ones going registered post care of the post office.

Use copy, that should copy the URL. Then do what Cami said with the copied URL.

Firt thing you need to do is get and image hosting site. There are plenty out there. I am currently using photobucket, but before that I was using imageshack, that is not terrible due to a policy change. Once you have uploaded any image to an image hosting site, just get the code of the picture, since they provide them and use the appropriate one for our image code here. Look at these pictures.

I clicked the image code, but you can get it directly and then use the image button here, but either way is fine.
And this is what I get from clicking the image code. [IMG]http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q485/classical_hero/tardthegrumpycat.png[/IMG]

With email, how you would post an image that has been emailed to you would depend on whether or not you're using an email app or a browser. Using a browser would mean opening up Safari and then going to the email sign in page, and then signing in. Using an email app would mean you click on the 'Mail' thing, rather than 'Safari', which would take you directly to your mail box. If you have an image in an email, you can tap on it (you might have to hold, I'm not sure), and select 'save'. This page would be worth a read on how to do that.

The photos will be saved in the 'Photos' app, which should be right near where you select to enter Mail or Safari in the first place.

Now if you want to post your picture as an image, it needs a URL (you can post it as an attachment, but that's not really what you want, so let's not go into that). Which means you need to upload it to the internet. When you're on a computer, imgur is a good site to do this with. But on an iPad, you can use an app specifically designed for the iPad. If you know how to download apps for your iPad, try this one (note: I haven't used it, so am only assuming it works well). Once you've got that app on your iPad, it seems that you simply go into it, 'choose photo', which ought to take you to your photo album, where you saved the picture, and then select that picture. Then select to upload it, which will then create a URL for the image. There will be an option to copy the URL, which you can then do, and repeat the process of posting on CFC outlined previously. :)

Note that if there's more than one link available for you to copy, always select the 'direct link'.

Edit: oi classical_hero, you don't even drink beer. :p

If you don't get the 'open in new page' or 'open in new tab' option, you can either 'copy', and see if that works (I assume it copies the URL?), or 'save' and go through the process outlined in this post.

When I say 'tapping and holding', I pretty much just mean pressing down and holding as one action, rather than tapping, releasing your finger, and then pressing the screen again and holding.

EDIT: Ninja'd. This is in regards to posting with the iPad.

Cami's instructions simplified:

1) Hit the picture you want to copy to CFC, and keep your finger on that picture until a small menu comes up. If no menu comes up, try doing it again.

2) The menu should have a button which says Copy. Hit that.

3) Repeat step 1.

4) Hit the button that says to Open in a New Window.
5) There should be a button which looks a bit like this:

on the screen. Hit it.

6) Scroll to the page which just shows the picture

7) Memorize or write down the URL (The writing in the white bar at the top, e.g. http://forums.civfanatics.com/image.php?u=177619&dateline=1312293928)

8) Go to where you want to post the image.

9) Click the textbox (The box near the bottom of the page where you type to make a post)

10) Type (Your link that you memorized/copied) [/ IMG], but without the spaces, e.g.

[IMG]http://i.imgur.com/BrHNF.png

11) Click on the textbox (from Step 9) again, and finish off the rest of your post.

Ok, I'm literally in a sweat now and I've gotta crash. I declare the competition suspended until all (most awesome) contributors methods are assessed. I thought I had it by simply pressing "copy" and then pasting that after pressing thelittle yellow mountain button (ninjacow's suggestion) But it pasted a zillion bloody numbers, I thought I was looking at the matrix. It wasn't a simple URL.

I cannot get the "open in new window box" to come up....but I remember I've done it before. I had to in order to do my avatar right?

What about going to the local pub yourself, drink a few beers and meet some wizards?

They are everywhere.

There should be a button that looks a bit like that on Safari on the bottom right hand side of the screen. Click it. Then the "New Window" button will appear on the bottom right hand of the screen.

If you want to use the photobucket app (the one classical_hero was using), this might be a useful video (particularly at the 1:40 mark).

Link to video.

Sometimes URLs are very long, so it might be fine so long as it's in the http://something format.

Are you cool with downloading apps (e.g. the imgur app)?

No cigar but really appreciate it (everyone). Got a tech guru at work, gonna hit him up tomorrow. If he comes through, you and Cam will be drinking on me fellas. Sorry CH :( but your instructions seemed like a "how to build your own space shuttle" to me, but appreciate the thought :)

What NinjaCow is describing is how you go to a different window. If you're in Safari, what you are seeing on your screen is one window. But there might be others open as well, just as there might be multiple pages in a book. You can flick through the pages in a book, just as you can flick through the various windows in Safari. That's what the button referred to allow you to do. When you click on it, it'll let you flick through all the windows you have, and then select the one you want to look at. So if you do have an image opened in another window, that's the button that'll let you go and look at that window, so you can copy the URL.

The problem you're having, though, is that the image isn't actually opening in another window at all. You don't have the option to look at the image in another window, because it's simply not coming up when you're pressing and holding. So in that case, don't worry about the new window stuff at all. It's only ever going to be useful when you are getting the 'open in a new window' option. Instead, just follow the instructions for the 'copy' option, and if that doesn't work, try the more involved instructions for the 'save' option.
