Has anyone else got to a point in the game where you just gave up

Right now playing William of Orange - simple game, keep the cities around 4

Problem is I have Monty to the north and he's declared war so many times and I have beaten him every-time (plus taken all his cities except his capital)

Then I have Boudi to the Northeast and every-time I Monty gets halfway beat down, she jumps in and attacks - then there is Alex to the Southeast who settles right next to one of my cities then complaints that I am expanding too much, who also jumps in when one of the others is in the middle of the 10 cycle peace time.

Then there is the barbarians that keep popping up because my people are unhappy that I am fighting everyone.

I just got to the point where this has become way too much - just too frustrating.

Can not build anything, can not really play the game, can not do anything -

Do not know what the game designers are thinking when they design a game that so unwinnable and so frustrating that just want to give-up playing Civ. Very close to dumping this game completely off my computer.

Looks like you just had bad luck with the AI's in the game and with the placements of civilizations.

Montezuma and Alexander are two of the most aggressive warmongers in the game. Boudicca also falls on that end of the spectrum.

It would probably be quite different if it was Gandhi, Theodora, and Sejong instead.

There must be additional factors you are not listing. Simple game, keep cities at four... why do you have all of Monty's cities and happiness/barbarian issues as a result? Alexander will continue to be a pain the whole game, just the way he is, but if you beat Monty and Boudica into submission, they should stay idle (perhaps pissed, but idle) for the rest of the game.

I used to war and not be able to build nessecary things also like tech buildings etc . It should slow u down a bit I guess but it should not totally . Key is to always stay ahead of the game . Literally lol . Always have big enough army to be defensive . That way in war time you can rotate cities to build and buy more military units while also rotate cities to build regular buildings . Quit Civ because it sucks . Not because its challenging . I don 't think it sucks but saying . Let that be your reason . But this game is all about planning and doing a better job of it . Keep learning !

Started out with a decent army - cities can keep up with the attacks - it just has become so bloody frustrating that you end one war and an ai starts back in and attacks after just ten turns. Needed a breather...

IF you found you in this situation just go for domination capture montezuma's capital and leave him with a few crap cities defend his capital and take the offensive at boudica

Just don't sit there as a sitting duck and hoping for a space victory or something else ..

The reason why they made france a warmongering civ in civ 5 is not because they love war but because everyone wanted to conquer them so...

Ignore scientific theory and go straight to artillery by the time you hit this you will destroy the AI

That is what I am thinking of doing with a backstep - total war - totally destroy monty and use the units against Boudicca.

Of all the civs, I think Boudicca is the worse.

I also think Alex is a fruitcake - declares war sends a bunch of units in then after 5 rounds gives up..... Alex just likes being a spoiler and has no real intent on capturing.

Funny thing Is you will not be called a warmonger because every other civ will hate alexander , boudicca and monthy for backstabbing you making peace adn dowing you again... SO if you dow them and take cities nobody cares

Make sure you denounce them. Pretty sure some other Ai will be like Yeah I hate that prick to

This is how I deal with all my war problems. And I share the OP's distaste for Boudicca and Alexander...

 they never leave me alone

Don't annex cities if you can't afford it... either raze them or keep them as puppets... it will help with happiness... send workers to these cities and convert everything to trading posts -> this will increase your gps (which you can use to buy more units/happiness buildings), and will also slow down their growth, which will keep these cities from costing too much happiness..

make sure you are trading with the civs you aren't at war... if you push hard enough, when they declare peace, these civs should give you stuff too...
wittle monty down to just 1 city... take his capital if you can...
that will mean he will no longer be a threat for the rest of the game and you can focus on the other two...
also, monty is the only civ in my 60+ games that actually has the 'afraid' status if you bring him down enough. has happened more than once with him, but never with any other...weird.

if all else fails.... try an easier difficulty? or to manually choose your opponents in the startup screen...

That is exactly what I did - took out Monty, killed all of his cities and hunted down everyone one of his units.....

Took out Boudicca - was a real pain because of Alex - even though she had only one city (not her capital) she kept churning out units like hotcakes, so I pillaged everything to slow her down. Did I mention that I tracked down everyone one of her units and killed them (yeah, I was a little upset being blindsided by these three)

Alex, poor Alex - stationed a whole bunch of archers in the one city he was fixated on and just let his unit kill themselves.....

Took out several CS because they thought being allied with Boudicca / Alex was a good idea.

I find it funny that all three when their last cities were about to die, were throwing everything at me to make peace - but I went with total destruction.

It's always frustrating to start surrounded by civs with strong "warmonger" flavors. I remember my first GnK game, where I figured I'd play for a peaceful culture victory while learning the new mechanics. Of course, I then learned that my closest neighbors where Ghenghis Kahn and Attila the Hun.

The best thing to do when starting near multiple warmongers is to neutralize one of them early. If you know you're bordering someone who will try to conquer you, beeline archery and take them out with an archer rush.

In almost all cases like this, I take their capital and leave them with just a few small cities. Kick them where it hurts, they will cry like a baby for the rest of the game but so what ? They are all going to hate you anyway so are you bothered about the diplo hit ?

I have a scenario in my current game where, believe it or not, Nebby and Gahndi both settled cities right up to mine, almost as if they planned it together to stop me growing, and then both denounced me. I only had 3 cities and they said I was growing to quickly.

I just took one capital after the other. They now whine a lot but can't do anything about it :D
