In the following posts I want to preserve my studies for a maximum of achievements with a minimum number of games played. I am trying to finish a game for a civ with all nation specific achievements and maybe a few extra. This is sometimes a bit tedious and sometimes I will miss some, so I am happy about any contribution, optimization and remarks.

(Achivement) shall mark an achievement that could be completed, but is not connected to the leader.

[civ5] Bismark - Germany
 • Leader: Bismark
 • enemies: Fewer opponents and city states favour a barbarian achievement.
 • Maptype: land region scripted map (Explorer Pack) - Amazon, Great Plains, Lakes
 • size: ?
 • Victory: Conquest
 • Units to Train: Landsknecht, Panzer
 • Speed: Slower speeds might help
The German unique Ability is to assimilate barbarian land units into their army. If you enter a barbarian camp there is a 50% chance that the last unit present will spawn on your side at full health with no experience.

Thus a land focused combat strategy does favour the Germans, therefore a huge landmass with lots of fog of war is recommended. Next select honor as social policy to track down camps.

Selecting slower speeds like marathon does favour you, since you do not have to built any units. The downside is that each civ can supply a limited number units based on difficulty, city number and population. Too many units will slow down production up to -70% meaning about triple production time.

 • Blood and Iron Win as Otto Von Bismarck (Germany)
 • Barbarian Warlord Convert 10 barbarian camps. Germany has a 50% chance of converting barbarians and having them join the German army.
 • work towards Here Ends the Noble Savage - Disperse 100 barbarian camps over any number of games.
 • (Exterminate! Exterminate!) - Win a Domination Victory

remarks:
If you want Barbarian Warlord in a single game, your much better off on a land region scripted map (several of them in explorers package)

Barb camp spawning rate on flat region is much higher on those than Pangaea because its based on land tiles within fog of war.
And yes, raging barbs hurts since it only increases unit spawning and not camp spawning.
[...]playing with fewer AIs & city states than default will also increase camp rate from fewer players fog busting.

This is a placeholder for setting up the map. / as there are some hindrances and annoyances and undocumented things out there.

Play now and advanced Settings
[civ5]Play now will reset most advanced options
Advanced settings: Vanilla doesn't save them, but G&K saves almost all of them. (The one it doesn't is number of major AI opponents)

[GandK]Play now will reset some advanced options
Play now will preserve the check boxes in the advanced screen - e.g. "Allow Policy Saving". It will reset Resources to "Standard" - most likely the others as well. To check select non-defaults. enter the game - exit - choose play now - exit and once again enter the advanced setup screen and it will show the last options used by play now.

Map Scripts
 • PangeaAll Civs start on the same landmass - City states can be on islands
 • ContinentsOn a standard map size this is usually but not always 2. More often than not, you'll need Astronomy to make contact with civs on the other continent. (Or if you suck at science, one of the AIs on the other continent sends a Caraval itself to "discover" your land mass.) Note that it is possible to have a totally isolated start on this map.
 • ArchipelagoOn a normal map size, this will either get you your own landmass or one shared with one other AI. (On larger maps you might still find yourself sharing the land mass with 2 AIs.) But unlike Continents, there are routes to make contact with most of the AIs pre Astronomy.
 • Earth mapThese are NOT scripts and so starting bias does not function. There is only one Natural Wonder on this map (Mt Fuji in the expected location). On normal size (and smaller), the map suffers from it having been designed when cities were allowed to be founded closer together than they are now.
Additional Maps with the Explorer DLC
 • Map PlusThe "+" versions of above maps with Explorers DLC. The most noticeable difference is they attach more small islands and as a side effect relocate most of the city states off the mainland and onto them.
 • Ring mapLocked to 5 city states, all in islands in the middle; it's often the case you'll need Astronomy to reach them. Note that sometimes the map generator is unable to find five suitable locations for city states, when that is the case, you'll start with even fewer city states. (You pick primary terrain, it's locked to strategic balance) This is nice for players who want contacts with everybody early while only having two borders to defend (it's also clear early on which border you need to defend first)
 • Large islands Similar to Archipelago, only your more likely to be the only player on your starting landmass. (But watch out for other AIs wanting to colonize it if you've left a city spot open)
 • Tiny islandsEven fewer tiles per land mass, in fact normally you hope that the city state did NOT spawn on your starting landmass and that they are instead on the next island over to allow founding a second city before Optics.
 • Small ContinentsOn a standard map size, I'd expect to see 3 or 4 Continents. You'll probably need Astronomy to make contact with at least one of the other continents. You'll sometimes have an isolated start, but its more common for there to be another AI or two on your landmass.
 • Duel mapBy default 2 starting player and NO city states. Very few water tiles. You pick the primary terrain. (You can also choose the opponent or as an alternative leave it random) Very suitable for early Domination Victories. Barb camp spawn rate normally much higher than in most maps which a human can take further advantage of by turning raging barbs on to increase barb unit spawn rate.
 • Great plains region mapIn Civ IV, I loved this map type. And in isolation I still do; the problem in Civ V is that the AI loves this terrain as much as I do. This terrain is so good all the AIs will DOW you early and often and so it degrades into a slug-fest.
 • Donut map Everybody on one landmass which is an oval; you pick both the primary terrain and the secondary terrain in the middle that's difficult to cross.

Advanced Settings

Certain Settings are not explained what they actually do. Some answers I found e.g. "less"/"more" are not really satisfying. I would prefer approximates like +/- xx%.

Check Boxes
 • Raging Barbarians behaviour altered - spawn rate increased by
 • No Barbarians, Removes barbarians from the game - unescorted settlers and workers - Can be fun. Though the AI won´t gift their settlers and workers to the barbarians either.
 • No Ruins no good-huts
 • Allow Promotion / Policy saving You are not forced to choose those and can dismiss the choice with a right-click on the circle. This can be useful if a goodie hut or other event messes up your :c5culture: aquisition. For example you want to save Legalism "Provides a free culture building in your first 4 cities." until you built a certain cultural building and then the policy pops 2 turns too early

References

[civ5]Montezuma - Aztec
 • Leader: Montezuma
 • Maptype: Lake
 • size: maybe tiny for a fast game
 • Victory: Conquest
 • Units to Train: Jaguar
 • Advanced Settings: Strategic Balance
The Aztecs unique ability Sacrificial Captives: "Gains 20xCulture5 culture from every enemy unit killed " will favour a combat focused game. This is supported by their UU Jaguar with " 50% combat bonus in jungle",
"Heals 2 damage if it kills a unit (25 HP in G&K)".

Iron is quite important in this game if you go upgrade the Jaguars that work nearly as good as scouts and are great barb. hunters. So at least open the honor social policy. Strategic balance will ensure iron in your capital.

For the floating gardens you need to built a city right next to a lake - make sure in that the tooltip says lake and not costal and research The Wheel and built Floating gardens.
 • Montezuma's Revenge… Win as Montezuma (Aztec)
 • Gardens of Lake Texcoco Build a floating gardens building in a city near a lake.
 • (Exterminate! Exterminate!) - Win a Domination Victory

To build their UB, the city must either touch a lake or be on a river. For the achievement I recommend it touch a lake.
Their UA is also very well suited for barb hunting.

[GandK]Empress Theodora - Byzantine
 • Leader: Empress Theodora
 • Enemy: Alexander - Greek
 • Maptype: Archilepago
 • size:
 • Victory:
 • Units to Train: Dromon
 • Speed:
 • additional:
In the game you want to go religious: Patriarchate of Constantinople
"Choose one more Belief than normal when you found a Religion". I could be Papal primacy "+15 to Influence resting point with City-States following this religion", as that belief does not return any gold nor happiness and could hinder other games. - Most other achievements will be given by just playing as a religious leader - founding a pantheon, a religion, spreading the religion. Holier Than Thou will require a Prophet to bomb another civilizations holy city - capital, which will result in diplomatic unhappiness.

For Greek Fire you need to research Sailing and get a ranged naval unit. Archilepago makes sure that you can reach your opponents and that most cities will be on the coast line, thus vulnerable to your ships. Now find 10 Greek ships and defloat them.

As you can attack land units a point in the Social Policy Honor will give you an additional culture income from barbarian kills and experience. Note that you need Bobardment II or Targeting II for the range +1 promotion which will enable your ships to stay out of city range - with the exception of English longbows, artillery and submarines.
 • Dancer, Actress, Empress, Victor Win the game as Empress Theodora (Byzantine)
 • Greek Fire As Byzantines, sink 10 Greek ships with a Dromon. (in a single game)
 • (Island Hopping) Win on an Archipelago Map
 • (Holy Father) Select the Papal Primacy Belief and Ally with 12 City-States
 • (Gad Zeus!) Found a Pantheon.
 • (Holier Than Thou) Become the dominant religion in an opponent's Holy City.
 • (Missionary Man) Spread your religion to an opponenet with a Missionary.
 • (Propheteering) Found a religion.

From memory you need the UU to sink the alex's ships, so don't upgrade them.
Also having multiple Alexanders helps but it does get confusing, when your asked to join in an attack, you think which one, is he asking about.
Of course if your going for all the achievements it's going to take a 100 wins anyhow, so maybe it's not so important to ram as many generic achievements in one game, if it comes at the expence of enjoyment or delaying victory.

[civ5]Elisabeth - England
 • Leader: Elisabeth
 • Enemy:
 • Maptype: Tiny islands
 • size:
 • Victory:
 • Units to Train: Longbowman, Ship of the Line
 • Speed:
 • Advanced Settings: Raging Barbarians
Sun Never Sets"+2 moves for all naval units", also receives an additional spy.

Ship of the line and Sun Never sets call for a naval combat. If you grab the Great Lighthouse you get +3 movement bonus.

The Achievement Ruler of the Seas will be a tough nut to crack and it will most probably take more than one game. I would prioritize Sailing for the Great Lighthouse and .. for Galeas, that can later be upgraded into Ship of the Line.

Iron working is another key technology since you will need one Iron per Ship of the Line - later one oil per battle ship. So research early and settle or ally accordingly.

Last but not least - do not sink your opponent ships after you researched Navigation - Use the privateers price ship promotion and assimilate them. This is based on attack strength. So tiremes have a higher chance than submarines - Look for the tooltip Upgrading a Privateer to a destroyer is another good move.
 • Video et Taceo Win as Elizabeth I (England)
 • Ruler of the Seas Use the English navy to sink 357 ships over any number of games.
 • Death Before Shame Fully unlock Honor.
For Ruler of the Seas, your much best off on a water based map than continents; I prefer Tiny Islands for this since it will ensure even on the biggest map size that just about every land tile is coastal (so that all camps can build ships)
Have ragging barbs on.
Now, to maximize the number of barb camps on it (as water tiles is working against spawn rate), play on standard but downsize the number of AI opponents to 1 and eliminate all city states) to get fog of war and opponent clearing of camps down to the minimum.
Have your first policy be opener of Honor for barb notifications. Park naval ships near the camps; kill the ships as they spawn.

Barb camp spawning rate on flat region is much higher on those than Pangaea because its based on land tiles within fog of war.

As to map size: If you stick with default number of AIs & default number of city states; it doesn't matter. But playing with fewer AIs & city states than default will also increase camp rate from fewer players fog busting.

Aztecs: To build their UB, the city must either touch a lake or be on a river. For the achievement I recommend it touch a lake.
Their UA is also very well suited for barb hunting.

Several of the achievements listed under Byzantine are appropriate for your first G&K game as anybody. Several other civs are in fact likely to reach these faster.
(Gad Zeus: You can reach that turn 5 as Celts
Propheteering: Fastest is luck driven more than anything else, but Celts, Ethophia, and Maya all have faster times)

England:

[GandK]Isabella - Spain

 • size: at least standard for a higher number of natural wonders.

Welcome to the big lottery. Seven Cities of Gold "Gold bonus for discovering a Natural Wonder (bonus enhanced if first to discover it). :c5culture: culture, :c5happy:happiness and tie yields doubled." This is the only bonus that scales with difficulty up to prince. There a natural wonder first discovered yields 500 :c5gold: equal to a settler on standard speed. There can be games where you find one or two first, but you might be out of luck and find none.

Above prince the chance to find one first greatly diminishes with huge bonus on AI combat units at start.

See Spoiler for the number of natural wonders and the discovery bonus. I will be happy if someone can supply the second discovery bonus. Not sure if that does differ on difficulty level.

 • Nobody Expects the Spanish Inquisition Win as Isabella (Spain)
 • Nobody expects... As Spain, use an inquisitor to remove another religion.
Deep Sea Rift: While it's extremely often in the game for Vanilla, its often not in G&K. You can generally tell the first time you discover a natural wonder if its in the game or not based on number of remaining natural wonders. (It will be one higher if in the game than not)

It appears that number is only map size dependent and not map type dependent; other than real earth is locked to 1 for all sizes (Mt Fuji).

As I recall Spain gets 100 gold if someone else found the natural wonder first.

Conquistador can also found cities, but only on a different landmass than the capital.

Yes, you are right. I wanted to add those as a suggestion, that people know what is out there and what they could focus on. I have put the optional ones in brackets.

Special Games

One City Challenge (OCC)
See One City Challenge - Emperor Freedom Strategy Guide
 • One to Rule Them All Win the game using the One City Challenge option in advanced setup.
 • (City of Gold) Have a city produce 100 gold per turn.
 • (City of Lights) Have a city produce 100 culture per turn
 • (City of Science) Have a city produce 100 science per turn
City of ___ : No need to be in an OCC for this.
If you have a GA in the modern era, you'll get City of Gold
Go for science, your capital will exceed 100 per turn with Research Labs
Go for culture, your capital will exceed 100 per turn with enough wonders. (This is the only one in which being in an OCC helps)

Multiplayer
 • Last Man Standing Win a Multiplayer game.
 • We Are Family Become the dominant religion in every Capital city on a standard-size or larger map. - As this seems bugged it shall unlock in hotseat games.

Add my bit about Byzantine.

[civ5]Catherine - Russia
 • Leader: Catherine
 • Enemy: England
 • Maptype:
 • size:
 • Victory:
 • Units to Train: Cossack
 • Speed:
 • Advanced Options: Maybe Strategic Balance

Siberian Riches: "Strategic Resources provide +1 production. Horses, iron and uranium deposits are doubled."
:c5moves: Strategic Balance will result in +2:c5production: and 2 key strategic ressources. For the achievement beeline for Horseback riding - so no other opponent can beat you as it will result in having to start over.

Russia seems to be a Hammerhouse and landgrabber.
Krepost: "+15 experience for all units built in this city, Reduces :c5culture: cost of buying new tiles by 25%" with Angkor Wat ":c5culture: and :c5gold: cost of acquiring new tiles reduced by 25% in all cities" this basically doubles the land acquiring process.

If you have a tech lead From Russia with Love should happen if you station a counter-spy in your capital.

 • Star of the North Win as Catherine the Great (Russia)
 • My Little Pony Catherine (Russia) Be the first to discover Horseback Riding
 • From Russia with Love As Russia, kill an English Spy

Catherine: She doesn't need abundant; she already gets 2X resources of what there is. What's good for her are Strategic Balance to ensure there are horses & iron or else legendary to provide more camps from the near Tundra start.

For My Little Pony: I suggest just beelining to the tech to ensure getting it. It's just that unless your playing under your difficultly level, you'll then find yourself wanting to start the game over from going that path.

[GandK]Attila - The Huns
 • Leader: Attila
 • Enemy:
 • Maptype:
 • size: Huge
 • Victory:
 • Units to Train: Battering ram (replaces Spearman), Horse archer (replaces Horseman)
 • Speed:
 • Advanced Options:
Scourge of God: "Grants free Animal Husbandry tech at the start of the game, +1 Production from Pastures, Raze cities at double speed "

The Huns start out with a Battering Ram instead of Warrior. Which is rather off since you can only explore but not attack units - but Battering Rams make a formidable and only melee siege unit with a Barrage (-30% range damage) promotion. Making them fearsome sieges that once in melee range make quick work with any Ancient city.

With both UU in the early eras this suggests early war and training lots of sieges for upgrades as they keep their ranged protection. On the other hand with the research of Satellites you will need to wait a long time and get research going.

 • Scourge of Everyone Win the game as Attila (The Huns)
 • RAM Usage Research Satellites while playing as Attila on a huge map.
 • Ruler of the Twelve Colonies Win on a Huge Map
Huns: I've not played them yet. Yes, at first glance the achievement has little to do with their UA & UUs.
But provided you remember to build science buildings, keeping science up while conquering can be done. Also, huge maps play much better with either Epic or Marathon than normal in general. In general, Marathon plays better on huge when warmongling; but if your worried about winning too early and not being able to stop yourself from capturing the last capital you can play on Epic speed to slow your conquest down.

 • Speed:
 • Advanced Options: Strategic Balance
Mongol Terror: "30% combat Bonus when fighting a city-state's units or attacking a city-state itself; all mounted units have 1 extra movement point"

Khan will also heal units in its proximity by 15 HP / turn in addition to the GG combat bonus.

Keshik will earn XP twice as fast and will contribute twice as much to the Khan generation. Thus focusing on mounted units - later landships, tanks and modern armors seems to be the optimal way to use their unique bonuses.

Strategic Balance to ensure horses are around.

The city state bonus I do not fully trust. As it will most likely earn a severe penalty towards city states and towards the protecting opponents.
 • The Golden Horde Win as Gheghis Khan (Mongolia). Requires Mongolia DLC.
 • cannot find a Mongol special achievement
Mongolia: The Mongolian DLC became free and was automatically downloaded to everybody shortly after base game came out.
Playing and winning the Mongolian scenario will give you credit for winning as Mongolia in addition to the scenario achievement. (Several of them each requiring winning on a different difficulty level) This scenario was much easier when the CD was released before a very early patch that nerfed overpowered horse units.

The Glory of Rome: "25% faster production for those buildings that have already been constructed in the capital"

Another Classical War-monger. Both UU have a higher attack than their counterpart. The Legion has the unique ability to built roads - saving workers for other tasks. So in preparation of an attack or post-war you can built supply lines or trade routes. Iron is very important for the war-fare as both UU require one iron / unit.

The building production bonus calls for national buildings like National College and others.

 • Veni, Vidi, Vici Win as Augustus Caesar (Rome)
 • All Roads Lead to Rome Build a road with a legion.
 • Zeupiter Augustus Caesar (Rome) - Conquer a city containing The Statue of Zeus. Requires Wonders of The Ancient World DLC.
Rome: Build the first copy of every building that you can in Rome. As a sword replacement; the Legion is better suited for connecting your 3rd city to your capital than the 2nd. Or you can do what its designed to and use it to road to that new city you either have conquered or are about to.

Mughal Fort replaces Castle "+2 :c5culture: Provides :c5gold: after flight is learned"

With 3 cities at max. (unsure if it is possible to raze a city later) there is only is only one direction - going up. The unique building supports defensive structures while aiding the cultural victory - additional culture will be gained with Neuschwanstein +3 :c5gold:, +2 :c5culture:, and +1 :c5happy: for every castle.but you need at least one city with a mountain in 2 range.
 • Give Peace a Chance Win as Mohandas Ghandi (India)
 • Bollywood Ghandi (India) Win a cultural victory with only three cities. You can only have three cities for the entire game.
 • (One to Rule Them All) Win the game using the One City Challenge option in advanced setup.
India's achievement: If going after it best not to capture a city at all if you already have three cities since its not until the end of the game that it unlocks. Best to either not found any cities at all or just one. Then you have room for a temporary spare city while still staying at or under 3 at all times.
As a side note, playing India in general for conquest was much easier before a patch was released shortly before G&K. Until that patch, a court house removed the city based unhappiness in addition to the expected effect.

Rome: Build the first copy of every building that you can in Rome. As a sword replacement; the Legion is better suited for connecting your 3rd city to your capital than the 2nd. Or you can do what its designed to and use it to road to that new city you either have conquered or are about to.
