Greetings, Immortals and would-be Immortals (and indeed any other players of any level), and welcome to the Immortal University.

Here is our Leader:

Here's the opening scene:

The following settings were used to create this map

And the Demographics for people to spot any info they can

Before we start, here's the copy & paste bit where I get to pretend that I'm TMIT:

To play, just extract the WB save file into your worldbuilder saves directory, then play it. Use custom scenario if you want some extra settings to tickle your fancy. This series was designed for people learning immortal, so most people here will be at that level or trying to attain it, although deity players are welcome also. Hell, if you want to play this on NOBLE. The intention of this and any other game thread I post is to get better. Play whatever level you need in order to improve.

If you are aspiring IMM+, try to remember to add archery back to the barbs in WB. Every time you don't, a deity AI will kill a kitten, although there are a lot of kittens so it's not the end of the world if you prefer easymode barbs .

I do request people to list their difficulty and speed. In terms of updates, well nobody follows that anyway. Post in the manner you feel comfortable. Typical comparison dates are 1 AD, liberalism, and victory/defeat, as well as any major events. If in doubt, go with that.

We also have an initial Immortal/Normal autosave which is much more convenient since you can avoid all the worldbuilder shenanigans. It comes with my personal seal of approval (not least as my worldbuilder edits may contain hideous game-destroying errors that could cause your computer to explode ).

Highlands was suggested as a map script and I decided to go with it. I've only played it once or twice so this should be interesting.

Spoiler the start :
Don't let the starting position fool you, food is around!

Spoiler one in game AI :
Looking at the 26000 soldiers in the demographics tells me something... my tech whore buddy Mansa Musa is in the game with his Skirmishers!

No edits were made to the map. Have fun and happy civing! ;)

woo hoo!

looks like we're in the non-northern part of highlands, so its already good. looks like a good beuro capital.

These scripts are always amusing; more land per civ on average but same difficulty = more actual difficulty :).

There are some tricks though. Let's see how people do.

Yea, big map makes things more problematic on Immortal. Some random AI could easily have nearly 20 cities by 1000AD with more room to expand lol.

Well for me, on this map, Qin is gonna try and grab TGW, Mids, and TGL. Not really any hurry to expand on this script. Get lots of CHs and throw all espionage points on Musa (if close enough) or another close neighbor who techs nicely. Should make for a nice combo of your own research and some thievery.

Farms, farms, and more farms with lots of whipping. Theaters/Colosseums with culture slider should work nice. I would imagine the start will be extremely slow but eventually the power of REP specialist and PS should be the game winner.

That's gonna be my plan anyways, lol.

Regarding the big map, I was very tempted to add another AI. I just wasn't sure how much bigger this map is. I took a quick glance, but tried not to look too much since I'm playing it. I'm playing Emperor, about 1 AD so far:

Spoiler :
Expanded to 8 cities, to the north by Wang, and west towards Percicles. I just hit machinery, have a few pult's ready, and were gonna go smash some AI with Cho ko no, whatever's! :p

Haven't decided if I will declare on Wang or Perc, but I'm thinking for the overall game to grab Mining Inc, (little experience with corps here) and before that grab more land from warring and peacefully expanding. Eventually will make it too space, hopefully before another AI hits a VC!

Just a general question for peeps with Highland map experience: Is mounted wars usually the way to go? It seems with land units it could take a long time to play through. I usually spend about eight hours a game and don't want this to last 20! Probably the reason I'm thinking space...

Low sea level??? How many AI did you add? 6? 7-8?

immortal up to 725bc

Spoiler :
went with BW -> AH - wheel - pottery - writing. I stalled for quite a while between pottery and writing, because i pushed for a 4th city to block wang, and didn't get the cottages up fast enough. There was a small barbarian horde at the beginning i had to deal with as well. i met greeks much later than korea, and just now met HRE. I will open borders with HRE and meet the others (hopefully).

we have tons of land. building a settler now to grab the rice / cow spot in the west along the greek border. spamming cottages like crazy. happiness is a real issue. I have built up some money and going for aesthetics to trade around, especially for monarchy.

Ppl are saying everyone will be getting a ton of land.. I can see that already and perhaps Im a bit too greedy, but i can easily see 15+ cities all on nice grassland.

going for late war or (depending on how many cities other civs have) even a peaceful round.

For all out war you should probably finish the map with mouted but I can't see any harm in taking one or two neighbors with Choko's first. But yea, it definitely takes a lot more time. I'm thinking about an AP win myself for 2 reasons; 1st - my cpu is ancient an crashes via memory leak on anything over small maps (and even then a lot too)....albeit, not usually till around 1AD but at that point the bigger maps eat me up and I have to reboot/shift load every 5-8 turns. 2nd - big map and I play slow ^^.

Ugh, perfect AI map. Lots of land and no commerce to help your expansion.
Which won't stop the AI from expanding as they pay a fraction of the maintenance.
Never seen so few resources before. And I mean any resource.

Do you think, really?
Ugh... I confess, until turn 35 I thought the same as you. That's when I discovered: to each problem its solution. Let's mine!

Haha, T35:
Spoiler :

If ever there's a forum game that demands you build the mids....I think cseanny has the right idea here. With a financial leader cottage spam would be the more obvious answer, with Qin it's early rep.

Actually on maps like this the easiest way to win is to stay small, buddy up to large super AI, and win culture before the AI can possibly switch over to that because it will spend longer building cities. GG. Well, technically AP is even easier but w/e.

If you want to slog the old bulb + capture will still work, but it's a lot of effort on maps like this.

Which is why I dislike these maps. Culture and diplo often feels like cheesing the game :)

Interesting start. If there's some Ag food I will likely go BW first

820 AD immortal
Spoiler :
peaceful expansion is going according to plan. blocked korea and greece and im sitting on 15 cities with 3 / 4 potential sites left. Mansa Musa was by far the runaway AI so I bribed charly on him. he is still running away though. he will be a problem, as he is almost surely going for cultural victory. he has founded nearly all religions, got music first, but haven't yet built sistine. mongols are really backwards. charly is the winner in the sweepstakes for loads of potential land.

my plan is still to peacefully expand and develop my cities and strike in the early modern era.

AP is glitchy and doesn't work properly. UN and Culture are legit VCs though. Especially culture, which is the #1 most common way for the AI to win. If it's allowed as a VC, the human player is perfectly acceptable to win it. Ban it and winning other ways becomes easier.
