Okay, this time it's the Vikings. To add something different to this challenge, I picked Ice Age as a map type. It might get crowded on those few good spots to settle ;) Tried to choose a map where you can use Denmark's special abilities, hope you enjoy it :)

Here's what the Danes have:

Viking Fury - Embarked units have +1 movement, moving from sea to land only costs 1 movement point, melee units pay no movement cost to pillage.
Berserker - Replaces longswordsman, +1 movement, free Amphibious promotion.
Norwegian Ski Infantry - Replaces rifleman, double movement in snow, tundra, or hill; increased combat score in snow, tundra, or hill without forests or jungles.

The game settings are all default, standard except Quick Movement and Quick Combat are enabled (you can disable them).

I've all the DLC so it might require you to have them.

Is there any rules I should be aware of for these Deity challenges? I've never played on Deity before, but I do fine on Immortal. Time for me to make the leap. Sounds fun.

I am at turn 114. This map is very hard, but certainly much easier than the Arabia one.

It is in a way the opposite of the Arabia map. In the Arabia map you could have a huge leverage in your empire, enormous amounts of gold, science and great cities. But a insanly tough time in the war against the 5-pack. :) In this map it is very hard to have any leverage anywere. But you have no 5-pack to fight against ;) and it is a smaller map with weaker opponents and you have spies and there are more city states. :)

Seems like you're doing well on this map too :) Where did you settle your cities and did you get DoW'd at the early turns of the game?

So I've given this 4 attempts. Very tough. Here's some problems I've ran into.

Spoiler :
Using the standard 4 city tradition opener, I'm having trouble deciding between going for sailing first or masonry or trapping. I've been starting in the original position, do you guys think there's a better spot to start? All 3 of these techs are really required and I'm not sure the order to go in. I've also found that even once I get a luxury, nobody has any money!

I think it's pretty clear that it is a race to the southeast spot. It's an amazing position for a 2nd base, but getting there before everyone else is very tough with nobody having any money to sell luxuries to. Of the 4 times I only made it there once and Napoleon immediately DoW'd me and I didn't have enough to defend.

Any Ideas?

I'm also a late entry to these, too but I think that Trade & DoW is banned or at least highly encouraged but other than that it seems appropriate that other rules (if such exist) are mentioned in the OP. So far haven't seen any such rules.

This challenge seems something like a peace negotiator will have a handful of work all through the game even though I only managed to meet 3 opponents so far (T50) and I'm in war with 67% of them. Tradition & 2 city NC seems like my immediate future mainly planned by the loving neighbours.

Too bad the day is so badly planned that vast majority of each must be consumed by doing something else than playing - it's a serious set back to all these challenges besides I'd occasionally woild like to play something else, too.

Nah, I am not doing to well. I have 312 score vs the leaders 782 hehe.

But my science is ok for being this map I guess, 119 at turn 123.

I managed to settle in the SE spot. But had to sacrifice a lot to do it - later NC. Paying other civs for wars etc..

I only have 3 cities btw. No religion to have, so I did plant my prophet :(.

ICE spots really really suck btw. :)

Your game sounds identical to mine, except I couldn't bribe other civs for wars and I'm not doing as well in science. Had to sell luxes in order to buy/upgrade units so I could survive so my cities are way too small. I settled my cities a bit different spots though.

No real set of rules... more just a place to share the same Deity map and talk strategy.

I read somewhere that you shouldn't improve all the tiles around your base right away, only the ones you will use. Is this true? If so how come? Do you pay gold for tile improvements?

No but u pay for workers, so if you are improving things u don't need it means you have too many workers or they should be employed somewhere else. Ideally stay one tile ahead so new citizens work improved tiles. It's also nice to have few extra high hammer spots to work when u can't grow. So it's actually bad advice you read somewhere. ;)

One reason would be to not give your enemy free health from tile pillaging if you're not even working those tiles. Not usually an issue on Immortal or lower but on Deity every little bit can make a difference, although the AI still doesn't consistently pillage when they should.

Turn 181. Great war with Suleiman. I just can not find any horses from any source (I want cavalry!!).

I managed to build leaning tower, took a GE, rushed Brandenburg, making 60 xp units now :). Bought 2 artillery, made 2 of them. Suleiman making Sipahis mostly luckely :)

I am trying the ski infantry out now also. Hehe, they are not good really. Maybe Harald overall has the worst civilization balance wise? :)
