I'm quite into this game, and I've had success with two of the three conditions for the Genoan UHV--the colonies and the banks/corporations. I cannot quite get to the "largest amount of imports and exports in 1640" though.

When I look at the victory screen, it tells who is leader (Justinian early on, Christian (Norse) in late game), but I have no way of knowing how far behind I am. Can this be figured out from the demographics screen? Somewhere else? Confused.

And I'm buying and selling like an idiot, taking my science down to zero so I can import anything another civ will sell me, even things I had in my borders, but traded to other civs for a song. So I'm trading a ton of stuff, but the Norse, a vassal of Germany is in the lead? I don't get it.

Thanks for any tips

You can check your rank in the Demographics screen.

Norse (and Genoa, and Venice) AI will OB with everyone which makes their Import/Export larger. But Norse should not have survived for that long. It's not difficult to make sure they're dead - their inherent Stability is pretty bad in the late game, and you can destabilize them further by making them switch Civics using either diplomacy or Espionage. You can also gift units to Sweden upon their spawn - they will spawn at war with the Norse.

Incidentally I think this UHV needs to be changed precisely because it encourages the player to make completely redundant trade deals.

A better UHV would be "Produce the largest Commerce output in Europe while having no more than 10 cities in year X".

The victory text is somewhat misleading
You need the biggest commerce from trade routes IIRC

EDIT: obviously, only foreign trade routes count
Total Export: the sum of all commerce from foreign city trade routes in your own cities (so checks all your cities for foreign trade routes)
Total Import: the sum of all commerce from your cities in trade routes of foreign cities (so checks all foreign cities for trade routes to any of your cities)

Umm, it has nothing to do with trade deals
(at least if I understand the code correctly)

So it's already something very similar to this
IMO it's a rather interesting UHV the way it is
Also keep in mind, that coastal cities have increased commerce from trade routes
With a reasonable number of coastal cities, as many trade route increasing wonders and buildings as possible, and the right civics, the UHV shouldn't be too difficult
You should able to complete it in most games even without harming your enemies too much

Speaking of Genoese UHV, what will going to happen with the 2nd UHV, when we incorporate the company system. Obviously the "found 2 corporations" part will be redundant. And IMO, only "build 8 banks" is a bit lame.

Something tied to companies does indeed sound good. But as you "can't" control companies, we should make the UHV not too much luck-based.

Well, then the Demographics screen is useless because its Import/Export entry counts Resource trades.

Some of the companies could still have buildable headquarters. Less overpowered versions. I feel that if the Genoan game does not involve "founding" the Bank of St. George somehow, it is not complete.

I think it should go like this:

(1) For the military orders, as well as Hanseatic League, Headquarters can be *built*, as a World Wonder, in any city where the corporation has already spread to. This Headquarter will disappear if the city changes ownership (due to conquest, flip, or trade), and the Headquarter becomes available again as a World Wonder. This will reflect, for example, the relocation of the Knights Hospitallers from Rhodes to Malta.

These Headquarters should only give moderate percentage bonuses (and are relatively cheap to build), instead of additive bonuses. This will encourage players to build these Headquarters in large cities. For example:

- Teutonic Knights Headquarters: +20% :hammers:, +50% military production;

- Knights Templar Headquarters: +25% :espionage:, +10% :science:, +50% military production;

- Knights Hospitaller Headquarters: +50% Defense, +25% military production, +50% production of Naval units;

- Hanseatic League Headquarters: +25% :gold:, +25% Trade Route yield, +50% production of Naval units;

(2) For the Renaissance banks (St. George, Medici, and Augusburg), they should only spread after being founded (by a GP, and they can only be founded in certain parts of the map). Again, the headquarters should give bonuses which are not dependent on how much the corporation has spread.

That's an example of a successful Genoese Empire in the first release of RFCE 1.1:

My vassals were Austria, Lithuania and Muscovy. I'm sure my conquests in Ukraine and the baltic city that Germany gave me were useless to complete the UHV. The bulk of my TRs were Italy, Greece and North Africa. I don't remember everything I've done, but I'm sure I must have focused on TR/Merchant Wonders, so this may have helped as well.

I still think you should only be able to found a headquarter by sacrificing a great person in a city which the corp has spread to.

It's possible to complete the UHV with about half the number of your cities here

At that time I thought Exports/Imports was the number I needed high to win, and besides that Germany was competing with me in both values (UHV checker and Exp/Imp, which made me really be sure they were almost the same values), so I expanded a lot (mostly on coastal cities) to compete with them. Germany conquered Denmark, Poland, Scotland and was conquering Sweden when the game ended, so they were a real threat to me.
