As if you didn't have enough to do, I've conceived another poll, 'cuz they're so fun to watch and debate about. I organized this one by country (in some cases countries) which a city state could come from, and in parentheses I have listed a few potential city states. The list is BY NO MEANS exhaustive, and I would like to hear some suggestions in the 'Other' category.

A couple of things... You neglected a lot of Europe

And 2. Guatemala City is already in game as the city Kaminaljuyu in the Maya city list. Mexico city list as well, etc.

I just feel like this poll isn't needed and a little too messy really. IE I don't want certain city states from certain eras in certain areas but want them from specifically other times

You just list a ton of modern options

Arawak (Maritime)

Wabanaki (Maritime)

Mapuche (Militaristic)

Muscogee (Militaristic)

Muisca (Cultured)

Yanomami (Cultured)

Hopi

Seminole

Algonquin

Cherokee

Lakota

hmmm...

A lot of those are already in the game either as cities under a Civ (Arabia-Baghdad) or as city-states (Yerevan)

I want all of Yugoslavian, Hungary, Czech, Transylvania and Slovak cities appear as City states.

so Sarajevo, Zagreb, and others on top of Prague, Belgrade, etc.

So Austria, starting as Wien and Salzburg can buy city-states to form their pre WWI border exactly on huge Earth map.

Yerevan is already a city-state

Would have loved to see Tiwanaku and Teotihuacan as ones but its unlikely due to Tiwanaku being an Incan city and Teotihuacan as an Aztec city.

Cahuachi, Huari/Wari, Chan Chan, Marajo, Monte Alban, Mohenjo-Daro, Tula, Powhatan (can't remember the specific settlement name), Abomey, Thimphu, Dhaka, Nan Madol are ones that I think are good as well.

I think something like a Cancun has a particulary good shot if they are going to be adding in tourism city-states

Where's the option to keep the Italian City States?

Damascus, Nairobi, Zagreb, Antananarivo, Kingston, Panama City, Meroe, Gaza (won't happen, I know), Vancouver, Kabul

I was thinking about new "yields" BNW will introduce and wondering whether that would mean some new types of city-states could be introduced.
In the end I decided we probably won't see "tourism city-states", for two reasons I can think of off hand, make that three reasons:

- too many CS types. Same reason why I don't think we'll see religious, economic, or happiness victory conditions any time soon. It ultimately trivialises those things if you create something for everything (wow, I just realized that I do NOT know how to explain that)

- how do you export "tourism"? Or in other words, how does civ A get better tourism by getting "tourism" as a yield from a CS? I mean in terms of... how do you explain that in a real world scenario? (OMG, sorry, I'm having real difficulty explaining myself)

- alright last attempt... oh no I just realized the last reason I was gonna bring up is not relevant. Don't worry :(

I get what you're saying, and I'd probably agree that having tourism based CSs would be a bit much actually. What we'll probably see is those mercantile CSs play a bigger role through trade and the cultured CSs play a bigger role as well.

I get a feeling we will be able to turn faith into tourism (pilgrimages!) and that religion will be one way to go for in a culture victory (it'll depend on where you lay the focus yourself). In this way, religious city states would become important for cultural victories in the late game which is better than the insignifance* Religious City State become later on. I do agree that straight tourism city states would be bad though.

*if we exclude the exploits of buying Great People..

Agree that the poll is not particularly useful, I'm not sure you can poll that topic at all even.

Some suggestions for City States:

Palmyra (mercantile or militaristic, really want to see this one)
Najaf, Isfahan, Lourdes, Pataliputra (all religious)
Samarkand, Bukhara (mercantile, are they on the Mongol or Persian City Lists?)
Daccar, Lagos, Khartoum, Nairobi, Dar-es-Salam, (whatever's needed ;))
Dubai/Abu Dhabi/Muscat (I know, on Arab list, but they would pe prime examples for City States, no?)
Teheran, Karachi, Kabul (militaristic, cultural?)
Vilnius, Kiev, Zagreb, Riga, ... (what would we do if we run out of European city states )
Cahokia, "native names of mesoamerican city states, not the current spanish name of the excavation site" (looking at you, La Venta!).

huh, didn't think about Tourism-based city-states, then maybe Phuket and Bermuda.

How would that work? Tourism is a resource generated by that which attracts tourists. If Cancun generates Tourism, that means tourists are going to Cancun. If Cancun is giving Tourism to America (for instance), that would represent the people of Cancun flocking to the beaches of Denver or something.

The mechanic I am thinking of is:

If you are an ally with a tourism city-state, you get tourism bonus for every friends the tourism city-states have. America is an "ally" of a tourism city-state Guam, and Guam is friend of Japan, Korea and China, you get tourism bonus because as an ally, the city state is considered your sphere of influence and its friends are sending some tourists there.

This is on top of resource bonus as an ally. The friends will get +2 happiness bonus or something.

That sounds needlessly complicated? And what would Tourism city states do before the Industrial Era? I really prefer the indirect way with religious city states (giving faith which can be put into Tourism OR Great Persons in the late game).

Or rather, your system should apply to all City State Types. If I understand it correctly, the tourism each allied city state generates should count towards your "pressure" as well. That sounds reasonable.
