I tried Romans, with Rome 1E, and greeks, with capital on marble (Korinthos). And both of them grow not too fast. What civilization did you play as? France has both a great growth and GP modifier.
"cereal" capped on 20 food. I suppose with "sushi" the same. It is only 10 pop unfortunately. At least in svn451Your country becomes a maw for every last cereal and seafood there is.

I suppose few world wonders was built in Mykenai and few specialist settled before France spawned? In one fine day I will try the same ;D

Exactly.

Again Mykenai on Amiens spot, not easy to found better place in Europe. Coastal, a lot of food, few grasslands for cottages, which are useflul right after flipping. Research rate was just amazing, also as production - 1knight each 2 turns.
All classical wonders, except Pyramids and Sphinx was built there.
Every single GP settled in city, including great generals, as a result, after I adopted city states (~in 1730y), city had 150~ food!
But ufortunately, only 14 merchats settled in city, and about 30 another specialists, if all of them were merchants, it is would be +30 food! And "cereal" only +11 ;[
2.000.000.000+ population in one city ;D
A bit early. City states - expensive civic, besides, hurts stability. I preferred at first to build National Park and eliminate Germans.1400 AD, right after building the Blue Mosque
