Black tiles fix

Some quick things that fix the problem for some people.
1) Delete the contents of C:\Users\<your name here>\AppData\Local\My Games\Beyond the Sword\cache

2) Deleting the contents of C\Users\<your name here>\Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\CustomAssets.
Note: "Documents" may be "My Documents" on some versions of windows. On my machine it is "Documents\My Documents".

Final thing to try when all else fails
1) Get the program PakBuild.

2) use PakBuild to extract all the art from the FPK files in the Caveman2Cosmos/Assets
Click PAK in the menu area and select Unpack... from the resulting drop down menu

Select/Go to the Caveman2Cosmos/Assets folder in the folder area. See image 1 attached

Select the the file C2C FPK file

Again select the Caveman2Cosmos/Assets in the new window and press OK.

A fuel gauge will come up and quickly indicate that it has finished. Don't be fooled it takes awhile. Wait for it to disappear. When it does the art that was in the FPK file is now in your art folder.

Do this for each of the FPK files in turn.
3) remove the FPK files from the assets folder.

4) Your loading of C2C will be much slower but you should not have black tiles any more.

Note. If you were using the alternate terrains you will need to reinstall them after doing this.

I fear I don't get that.

OK before everyone said, so that NO duplicates you need to get all the FPK and folder COMBINED so that there should NOT be any (duplicates/black titles). I tried it, BUT it came back at the attached amount. I tried it ingame and POOF, STILL Black Tiles, even more so. So i deleted all that. I still say its OUR Units.FPK that is messing things up, badly.

You can't avoid the loading of the base Civ4 FPKs (unless you messed around in that folder) so if you combined those in you would have even more duplicates.

Not if you do Standard Civ 4 1st, then Warlords, then BtS, then C2C, Overriding all (in order).

So you installed everything on top of each other, unpacked everything and then made a single FPK file from everything ?

Correct, if you want to learn more or ask questions, lets not clutter this thread, so pls use PM thx.

I've just found another solution that may work for some people. There is an option in the graphics settings of Civ4 called High Resolution Textures (or something to that effect). I always kept it enabled for other mods but got black textures with this mod. Turning it off fixed the problem for me.

For me nothing works.
First i tried to clean cache and the custom assets, then unpacked the FPK (only C2C ones) one by one, ina attempt to determine which was causing the trouble. Obviously restarting the game and cleaning the cache between every operation. No way.

I just add that it's not only a problem of see FoWed tiles even in your own territory, but the game behaves like those tiles were unclaimed. I've found animals inside my borders.

Pity, it's an interesting mod. Maybe a bit excessive in buildings and techs. Some cut here and there would make it better, IMO.

First off, sorry about the BT problem, try this, this is what i do now, its alot better this way:
Start regular BtS in the Plat Now and just pic any map, any civ tiny map, and get it to the starting point, DONT play.
Then start C2C from the shortcut provided in the game, you might need to re-do the properties of it to be correct.

You should NOW be able to play.

Just FYI this mod is HUGE and WILL stay that way, we are a "Bigger is Better" mod and WILL remain that way.:)

Thanks for the himt, i'll give it a try. Do you mean that i don't need to unpack the FPK with tha trick?

BTW, i experienced the same problem in RoM-AnD, so i think it's something related to the base RoM mod. Sometimes clearing a forest solve the problem for the areas close to it, sometimes using the unreveal/reveal tile in WB does something.

About my comments to your mod, basically i like it, otherwise i won't bother to report problems. While i like "builder mods" because i am a builder, i still think it's a bit excessive. I modded some XML to better suit my taste, but i can't do much. In any case your work is very accurate and historically interesting.

He means that if the trick (i.e. just start a vanilla BTS game, get to the first turn/map shows up screen, close game, start c2c (via a shortcut)) works and BT are gone then you don't have to worry about unpacking the FPK files.

Also, if the trick works (FYI, I get BT whenever my Nvidia video drivers updates and it's what I do to fix it), there are instructions on modifying your c2c shortcut so that it won't screw up the settings. Look at the 3rd link in the first post of the Player How To Documentation thread Here.

I gave another try to C2C to see how black tiles work.
I followed your instructions on how to make a shortcut with profile and so on.
I've also tried to change the graphics settings, but the FoWed tiles are still there, covering about an half of my territory, even some city center.
To see an improvement made in those tiles i need to open WB, fog/unfog that tile.

Unplayable!

I don't wanna unpack the FPK, too much space and too much files. In any case i've tried in a temporary setup without results.

Did you solved the problem with newer versions?
I'm currently running 1.76 beta 3, should be of May 2013. I see there's v.32 now... differencies? improvements?

I posted time ago that this problem was present in AND too, so i think it's something well deep in RoM.

I've found a workaround.
I saved a WB save on turn 400 or so, then opened as a scenario.

The black tiles disappeared.
The problem is that it starts on turn 0 and that any counter is resetted.

Thus i guess it's something happening during the game but not retained in WB.

Another question: how are those infesting crocodiles supposed to be submitted? There're many buildings related to them, i killed hundreds of them, but never subdued one. I WBed some to have those buildings.

Other than the FPK unpacking instructions, there hasn't been any work done (nor would I expect any) on the Black Tiles. However, the files are modified often (clean-ups/new units added) so whatever is triggering the problem with your computer may/may not continue between version changes (or heck maybe between video driver updates).

Crocs... I've subdued them in past versions, haven't seen any in v32 (I'm in the wrong climate zone I think, I get nothing but deer, moose, bear, lynx, an occasional eagle, hawk, skunk, wolverine, viper and rarely an ibex or an elephant... as there is an elephant map resource). Anyway I can't imagine it being anything other than bad luck. Try increasing your subdual % with the highest hunter promotion.
