The Nobles' Club Series started out as a way for Noble-level (and below) players to improve their game. Most of the original participants now play at much higher levels, so this has become a way for advanced players to help others learn to play better. You can play your own game at any level and with any mod, but it would be nice to comment on the games of other players and give them advice.

Our next leader is Tokugawa Ieyasu of Japan, whom we last played in NC LXXXIV. The Japanese start with Fishing and The Wheel.

  • Traits: Tokugawa is Aggressive and Protective.
  • The UB: The Shale Plant, a Coal Plant with AMAZING +10% hammers to the city where its built. It also causes -2 health but for that you can get power in the city. Howerever, many players think that its the worst UB in the whole game. .

  • The UU: The Samurai, a Maceman which is THE COOLEST UU IN ENTIRE GAME!!! It brings Japanise history in your mind! SAMURAAAIII!!! Umm.. Sorry I mean that its maceman with 2 first strikes and Drill I promotion. It doesn't lose any abilities of maceman and its maybe the best Maceman UU in Civ4. .

And the start:

Spoiler map details :
2 Continents on Continents map script..
Spoiler edits :
Fishes added in coast, Shaka brought to the game!
Finally, a cut and paste of our standard doctrine:The WB-saves are attached (zipped; they are bigger than standard saves). To play, simply download and unzip it into your BTS/Saves/WorldBuilder folder. Start the game, and load your favorite MOD (if you use one, if not, check out the BUG MOD), select "Play Scenario", and look for "NC CXX Tokugawa Noble" (or Monarch, etc., for higher levels). You can play with your favorite MOD at the Level and Speed of your choice. From Quick-Warlord to Marathon-Deity, all are welcome! We stuck with the name "Nobles Club" because it has a cool ring to it.
Spoiler what's up with specific difficulties :
In each scenario file you can select your level of difficulty, but that doesn't give the AI the right bonus techs by itself. Use the Noble save for all levels at and below Noble. The Monarch save gives all the AI Archery. Emperor adds Hunting; Immortal adds Agriculture; Deity adds The Wheel.

For players on Monarch or above, you should add archery as a tech for the barbarians (if you don't, the AI will capture their cities very early). This cannot be done in the WB save file and must be done in Worldbuilder as follows:
Spoiler how to add techs to the barbarians :

  1. Zoom in all the way so you can't see the rest of the map.
  2. Use the CTRL-W key (or the menu) to enter the worldbuilder. Avoid looking at the mini-map in the lower right corner.
  3. By default you're in "player" mode (look in the box in the upper right; the icon that looks like a person should be selected). You'll get a drop down menu labeled with your leader's name. Barbarians are at the bottom, so cover the rest of the list with your hand if you don't want to see who else is on the map. Select "Barbarians".
  4. Select the "Technologies" tab in the box on the left.
  5. Find Archery (the arrow head icon; 8th row, 3rd column from the right) and click it.
  6. Exit the worldbuilder.
  7. Zoom out again after the map fades, and start playing.
Spoiler huts and events :
Note: The standard saves have no huts and have events turned off. If you want tribal villages and random events, choose the saves with "Huts" in their names. If you want huts but no events, select the Huts saves and use Custom Scenario to turn on the option that suppresses events.

Excellent! Been looking forward to this game.
I would move the warrior NE to learn more about the north before settling.
To bad the warrior isn't at the East side of the settler as that side looks far more temping.
Maybe SIP or move settler 1NE, but we need to find at least om more hill for that to pay off.

I don't see any reason to not SIP unless there are non-jungled gems up in that jungle that we can possibly get in the BFC. Even so, it looks like we would lose fresh water and the FPs, so that would be a questionable move. Warrior 1NE i guess, and then most likely SIP.

SIP if warrior doesn't reveal anything, I think warrior 1NE is the only real move that makes sense. Good job Robert FIN! :goodjob:

Edit: Just opened the Monarch no huts save and the warrior is in a different position. I opened the file in MS Word and found there is no "BeginUnit" or "EndUnit" lines. Whenever I make games for IU I leave the "BeginUnit" and "EndUnit" for are own team. This is done by deleting all the "BeginUnit" and "EndUnit" lines EXCEPT the ones associated with "UnitOwner=0" that identifies us.

Qoute from NC bullpen dalamb's message #4:

"Delete all BeginUnit/EndUnit blocks except those with "UnitOwner=0". This is critical to allow AIs to get their appropriate units at higher difficulties while leaving the player's units in the same spots as the initial screen shots."

Its not a big deal Robert, I just wanted to explain so you can correct for the future!

P.S. Otherwise good job!

Oh dear... I knew that it can't be totally ok... Well, maybe its possible to fix the problem but I'll check it out tomorrow. Sorry for the mistake. By the way; I have to tell you that an accident happened while editing. I deleted the huts and saved without copying. However I manually added the huts and they're working fine. MS Word still can't find the huts line but don't worry, they still exist. I'm happy that after all these troubles and mistakes we still have managed to host my 1st NC game and I'm able to help Dalamb when he wants to :)!

I am probably among the few people who enjoy playing Tokugawa. I got a soft spot for the guy since my isolationist game as him. :)

I think I will move the warrior SW and get the warrior exploring early as 1NE won't reveal anything we won't see by settling in place and since it's not a hill, we won't reveal much. At least nothing that will influence our settling decision away from SIP.

1NE should reveal a couple of tiles outside of the current BFC.

1NE should reveal a couple of tiles outside of the current BFC.

2N, 3N1E, 3N2E. We know 3N2E is a Jungle tile based on the screenshot. (Looks like Jungle, maybe forest, need to open the actual save to be sure). The other two look like unforested tiles.

The only tile gems could be in that will need us to move and revealed by the warrior move is 3N1E. We need to burn a turn for them as the only way to get that tile without losing a turn is to settle on the corn. Gems might make for a faster start, but they will also mean moving off what's looking like a very good Bur cap. I am not sure I would make that move. Especially since Jungle might spread to them. Of course, the move to 1NE will also reveal an hill tiles in 2 tile radius, but I don't see a point to moving for hills with this start.

The more interesting question for me with this start is what the tech order should be. Agri -> Pottery and then go for BW while laying down cottages so the worker would have something to do instead of just spamming roads?

I think it's unlikely that there's anything to warrant moving as well, but i would still like to reveal those tiles before settling.

As for tech order, it's always more interesting when you start with something useless like Fishing on an inland start. Ag is obviously first. Early Pottery is really tempting when you have numerous FPs like this, and that would speed up subsequent techs. The only issue here is that to get any production it looks like going all the way to BW will be necessary unless Hunting is teched first. That plus the happiness boost actually makes Hunting look a little appealing. That one will require a little more thought.

Since you spoiler the choice of map script I'll spoiler my question.
Spoiler :
Does "2 Continents" mean the Custom Continents map script, or the normal Continents map script where you just counted 2 continents? Custom Continents spawns so much land that your expansion phase continues into the late Medieval Era. If you intend to grab it all, prioritizing Currency or at least Alpha -> Research for Currency can help. I never played a game on Custom Continents where I could start a profitable war before Feudalism (and capitulation) were widespread.

@Ben:
Spoiler :
Sorry, I meant continent map script with 2 continents. Will be fixed soon..

This start highlights Toku's one saving grace - fast Pottery

  • Please spoiler your reply about the map script.
It would be nice to fix the warrior location, but don't feel to bad; bear in mind that the first half-dozen or so NC maps had moving warriors until someone told Bleys how to get them to stick in the same spot.

Totally. Even with no commerce tiles in sight you can fly through techs pretty well on this opening by getting all those floodplains cottaged early and worked by helper cities.

Spoiler :
Shaka is ripe for the picking with those elephants in the BFC. And there`s no hurry, really, he`s just so so slow tech-wise.

Monarch, 790 AD
Spoiler :

From where my warrior was, I was able to move him to the hill NE of settler and saw the three hills on the coast. So i ended up settling there (on that hill NE of settler). In retrospect it was a bad move because I only gained one hill out of it and I never set up a strong helper city for the FPs because west of capitol is just craplands

Initial tech was agri > pottery > BW. After seeing all the jungle to the north I went IW after BW. Then begun the march to construction.

City 2 was founded SE of cap to get pigs, fish and at least one of the flood plains from capital. City 3 was marble/iron/fish. City 5 was Gems/Gold/Rice and city 4 was a city in between that and the cap. SB took my city 6 site NE of capital

I suck at war and have never done a proper Elepult rush. Well, I still dont know if Ive done a proper one, but shortly after 1 AD I DOWed Shaka with a stack of 4 Swrodsmen, a half dozen pults and a half dozen elephants with more on the way.
I picked off his last city at 790 AD.

Ive picked up Currency and Code of Laws and am almost done with Civil Service so my economy isnt in terrible shape. I only took 3 of Shaka's cities so I have some expanding still to do.

I have a feeling that the other continent is going to be in much better shape tech wise, and SB isnt helping things:

Spoiler :
AMCW9P0.jpg

He has 11 cities so taking him out before he gets to Longbowmen probably isnt happening. And Samuaris just arent going to cut it with his protective totem nonsense.

So I guess its strengthen economy, expand, tech, and hope Im not too far behind the other continent

All the problems should be fixed now. There is now zip. file with no moving units if I managed to do it right. :)

Will give it a try on Monarch/Normal/No Huts/No Events

Was planning to try out the mighty Samurai in action. Until the Ivory in the vicinity spoiled the plans :( It may be offering an Elepult rush. But let's see first where and who the AI opponents are.

But there is hope :) What has been non-existent in all of my Monarch games, is the GP farm. If I could get this operational, maybe then I would be able to bulb through the early tree to medieval techs before the Samurai gets obsoleted by Rifling.

I haven't played too far, but some early observations (Imm, normal):

Spoiler :
I'm not really concerned about Shaka. We have Ivory and plenty of early research potential, so Shaka should inevitably be trampled under the hooves of elephants.

I'm much more worried about the big picture. It looks like we are on the smaller continent with just Shaka and SB. Both of these guys are terrible techers, neither are likely to found a religion for us, and neither are likely to build wonders for us to capture. Shaka pretty much has to be killed which leaves just SB as a potential trading partner, and he will likely be all but useless in that role. Wiping him out would probably be better, but he's going to have Prot LBs by the time Shaka is killed off, so a Construction war won't be the solution.

It's very easy to envision the other continent getting way ahead with tech trading and all of the wonders. My only hope is that the 6 or 7 religions they found over there get split up and there's no 3 AI love fest going on. Different religions and war would be awesome, so i hope to see GG spawning on the other continent.

Izuul

Spoiler :
SB can be a competent techer with good land, which he definitely gets on this map. The thing that really hurts him in most games is how he's the default target of the warmongers. In my game he founded Taoism and (i think) confucianism as well. Now this might have happened because the other continent is advancing very slowly. Just judging from the slow wonders, the Oracle wasn't built until 625BC  now don't I feel silly for self teching construction. One just has to follow events in a distant land carefully. What I'm wondering is if this is a game in which it makes sense to try to lib Astronomy.
