Second attempt, tweaked a few settings (Revs are on). Also being brave and trying huge map, hoping the turn time improvements for v29 are noticeable..

Also realized my first go was a bit...dry...so, will work on that

First, the settings:

I couldnt resist the 4 hammer tile. Gave up the coast for it (but at least on a river)

Meet Bob, and his brother Doug
Dont get to attached to them.
Spoiler :

While Bob had a few glorious victories, Doug did not fare so well
Spoiler :

But Bob's lifespan was not much longer, luckily he had a son
Meet Bob Jr, raised by a friendly herd of wild elephants
Spoiler :

As for Doug Jr, well...like father like son
Spoiler :

But the family would get its revenge
Spoiler :
SHXk6hu.jpg

Tragically, Doug the third met his demise one turn later, via a hawk.

100 turns in.
Went scientific as first trait.
No other civs met. That nasty Moa kept getting in the way.
That 4 hammer tile really speeds things up, and I needed it because my chasers had a low life expectancy. Finally got the master hunter building on turn 99.
Something is off about playing as Canada vs. Emus and Kangaroos

Doug: Turn 1-Turn 28. death by Moa
Bob: Turn 1-Turn 39. death by Viper
Nameless Wanderer: Turn 12-Turn 14. death by Jaguar
Chasers:
Bob Jr: Turn 51-Turn 54. death by red Kangaroo
Bob III: Turn 62-Turn 79. death by neanderthal
Doug Jr: Turn 65-Turn 78. death by Moa
Doug III: Turn 80-Turn 100. death by Hawk
Bob IV: Turn 85-Turn 89. death by Haast's eagle
Bob V: Turn 95-???

Turn 101-200 update:

Not a whole lot to report this time around.

Explored my entire landmass, and I am in isolation. Once i found city 2 I will definitely send some canoes out in hopes of finding other signs of semi-intelligent life out there.

Bob VI did find a friend
Spoiler :
kOHJ3Cm.jpg

However, the fellow had some serious hygiene issues so Bob didn't want to escort him back to town. Sadly, he became emu food.

Was curious to see this new mechanic too, my own stupidity for not escorting him

Bob V: Turn 95-Turn 110. death by Neanderthal
Trackers:
Doug IV: Turn 106-Turn 126. death by....Moa...again. The family is cursed.
Bob VI: Turn 116-???
Doug V: Turn 146-Turn 185. death by Neanderthal

Bob VI has turned out to be quite the tracker. Currently level 7. Sixth time's the charm?

which will go extinct first, Doug's bloodline or the Moa? stay tuned

Maybe it would be better to send out your Dougs and Bobs in groups of 2 so one can defend while the other one heals...

They tell me they work better alone though. I think they arent being truthful.

I think a good strategy if there are a lot of Neanderthals is to send out a chaser/tracker stacked with a spiked clubman. Most of the deaths were before they were available though.

Turn 201-300

Not much to report early on, until the discovery of tribalism at turn 257. Finally the Canadians were showing some signs of becoming civilized.

Want to know where the second city is? Just follow the trail of animal poop
Spoiler :

Its a good thing C2C focuses less on the terrain and more on the city itself because the surrounding area has nothing but horrible spots. At least this city should eventually grow into a nice production center.

At turn 274 Shamanism was founded, and thus was born the first priest of the temples of Syrinx

The Canadian rafters found a bunch of villagers treading water off the coast and received
Spoiler :

Which saved a total of one research turn as Chiefdom was already almost fully researched...

Many of the Canadians turned to Bob VI as their chief, but he had bigger ambitions. Waving goodbye to Doug VI, he stepped onto a brave new world

Spoiler :
xQOZfRI.jpg

And finally on turn 299, Bob VI made contact with another civ.
Spoiler :
qvuEogq.jpg

Of course this chap just stared confusedly at Bob. Bob contemplated killing him, but felt pity on the lesser creature and moved on.

Bob VI: Turn 116-???
Doug VI: Turn 254-???

Onward to turn 400!

Bob VI found another neighbor, however he didnt try to strike up a conversation. When you see someone squatting in the words, they probably dont want to talk to you. Unless they need you to hand them a leaf.

Spoiler :

The Canadians were presented with an option to begin burning their garbage. After some deliberation they decided that doing so would mean they would have to actually gather the garbage together, so laziness won the day.
(that and I dont think the early pollution is worth it)

At one point I was number 2 in tech, but I still was the first to the ancient era

My civilization is WONDERful

Barbarians are quickly becoming a pain in the ass, putting cities up everywhere. i had to destroy two of them to get city IV where I wanted it, however there was a bonus to that:

Spoiler :
Q6UnVjv.jpg

Thats a pretty powerful perk, to be able to go right to size 2 this early. Most of the captured people are military though, which without worldview slavery dont seem that useful. they can rush buildings, contribute some food (39) or be sold for a measly 13 gold. Or upgrade to a military unit, but thats costly.

Bob VI and Doug VI are both alive and well, with bob VI up to level 17

Next up: expansion and barbarian eradication. stay tuned...

 Love the humor in these posts! The Bob and Doug show should get syndicated. ;)

Turns 401-500

When we last left those lovable Canadians, their lands were being settled by Barbarian scum. General Geddy Lee led a small squad of a few stone macemen and a couple atlatlists too solve the issue, even claiming one of their cites for our own.

And it was about this time where the pissy Canadian workforce cried STRIKE and the economic collapse was upon us. however a shift into the caste civic (grumble grumble -50% great people) put an end to the collapse.

At this point the scientists are extremely confused and honestly have no idea what they should research. Pottery, Divination, and then Trade are what they decided upon.

Im a sucker for the Oracle. However, not everyone agreed with the decision:
Spoiler :

Even if they do swim over to join the Holy Roman Empire, ill probably just conquer them and they will be my citizens again anyway, jokes on them.

Oh and tough to be a 'Holy" Empire without religion. Because I used oracle for Shinto while Im researching Mesopotamism.

A glance at the mighty Canadian empire at turn 500 for the history books:

As for Bob and Doug VI, I decided to turn auto hunt on. But then Bob VI got naughty and killed a scout of Madagascar's so I had to put em back on manual. Canadians should have manners, it doesnt seem polite killing a man before you tell their leader you want his head on a pole.

Maybe soon we will be able to say more to the other civs than grunts and 'eh's. Stay tuned...

funny to read but if you get the early wonders you know you play one or more difficulty levels too low. i mean whats the point being in the lead from the beginning? you still can adjust difficulty by bug menu, I suggest you try several levels higher than vanilla civ, as C2C recommends it.

I started on Monarch and set it to flexible difficulty and Ive been at immortal almost the entire game now.

To me, there are a couple things wrong with this picture:

In fact, i put that city there to see what the AI would do. their city was there first and they could wipe me fast. they havent even bothered to swipe a worker even when they had a unit on the border. Its still fairly early, so well see what they do

The other big issue is those two barb cities in the north, they have eben there for a long time. On higher difficulties the AI should be ruthless on those barbs to get some captured people. Granted the mechanic is brand new, but perhaps to help the AI, turn up its aggression vs barb cities.

Another big advantage is my isolated start, I havent touched my military at all. Ive been going religion with a dash of commerce and science (recently beelined seafaring and am building GLH), and the best offensive unit I can train is the camel rider.

The more advanced AIs however have been after boosting military. Someone built a while ago, kind of intrigued to see where they are when i meet them

Turn 601-700

Not a very exciting period. I wish I could send spies in to foreign cities and plant Writing tech on em.

The Barbs are getting restless in the world. Bob VI happened to wonder by the emergence of the Zulu empire

Goals for this time around were: Great Lighthouse, Literature, More religions

I believe it was Judaism that triggered this
Spoiler :
WXS2mCl.jpg

General Geddy Lee was dispatched to the western continent to pick off some barbs that Madagascar was too lazy to deal with and pick up some slaves to for cheap labor (Ive been using them for hammers mainly, not a fan of the unhealthy/unhappy for settling them).

This city was an acceptable location though
Spoiler :
Ri34jAo.jpg

While this city is in a decent enough location, Im getting close to the point of over expansion with 10 cities so after taking some prisoners it was burned to the ground.
Spoiler :

A general dislike of bathing has taken its toll, as disease is starting to run rampant. And these sick, smelly people are committing lots of crimes. So healers and town watchmen have been stationed in most cities.

Mission accomplished!

And here is a look at the Temples of Syrinx. Note the top right corner

Unfortunately, Gold is nowhere to be found to make Sweaty Papaya or w/e its called. Would be nice to have access to all the religion civics. Both Free Church and Secular would have their uses. There is some gold near the HRE, perhaps hes connected by now. Now if they would just research writing....

Will I FINALLY get to talk to someone? Will they make fun of my accent? Stay tuned....

Game Analysis (warning, possibly boring content ahead!)

Divine Prophets are overpowered, I think. With the amount of religions I have founded my people should be getting pissy, but they arent because Ive founded them all in my capital (which i am trying to turn into a Great Prophet farm to get all the buildings)

As i mentioned earlier, AIs need to be more aggressive with barb cities. the captured people is a nice mechanic, but the AI should pursue it better. Maybe they are and im just seeing wussy civs around me though, its obviously not a big sample size.

Scientific trait is just blatantly overpowered.

Id be curious to know the number crunching behind building the -gold +science buildings, as to if its better to build libraries everywhere and just reduce the commerce slider to compensate.

Perhaps to make it so civs talk sooner, allow the creation of some embassy type of unit to be able to establish communication with minor civs, maybe give a +diplomacy for using it to reward first to writing.

Just wanted to say again that i dig the new capturing mechanic. I havent played with the slave markets at all, but even without it does make me want to go around and kill barbs. Its like hunting for the ancient era and beyond.

Divine Prophets certainly enhances the difficulty or ease of the game difficulty setting. On Immortal I'm finding it difficult to get many religions so it isn't showing to be too overpowered in that way. Plus, if playing on the religious disabling (which is a really rough mod and won't be perfected for some time yet according to current priorities) this hoarding of religions would not help a player much unless other sacrifices are made (or at least that's the goal... right now its just that it wouldn't help a player much at all.)

Im admittedly doing it more for fun than anything, but all those monasteries really add up. It seems the big early game benefit (science from monasteries) will go away around the modern era, but when i start infecting the world with the religions having all those holy shrines in the same city will put up ridiculous gold and culture.

I do have a feeling though after the classical era I wont get much newer religions, because now that the AI has gotten its city count up their tech pace is quickly growing.

Turn 701-800 (3689 BC)

After waiting over 45000 years to talk to someone, it turns out we waited all that time just to speak to an ass
Spoiler :

Finally a little bit of conflict
Spoiler :

However, the Malagasy army is an interesting lot. And by interesting I mean cowardly. It banged on my walls a few times, but I train one additional defender it runs off.

I am now running a Charlemagne economy. Have the research slider set to take a small loss per turn, but every so often I sell him a tech for 1000 or so. the other Romans seemed content to supply with a full navy for Board Games, but I really have no use for a dozen outriggers. i took some Galleys and some gold though.

Meanwhile, Bob VI is observing the most pointless war ever:
Spoiler :

So Shaka has a stack attacking Alexander, Alexander has a stack attacking Shaka, but neither one does much of anything and the civilization with 5 times as many cities cant wipe out the upstart former barbarian civ...

With contact established with everyone worth speaking to its time to set our sights overseas. It also might be time to plot a take over of Madagascar

stay tuned...

Im baffled that Im still on immortal difficulty. Only Charlamagne has a tech pace remotely close to mine. occasionally i see some wonder being built overseas for something that I dont know what the tech is, but i can imagine them being that far ahead.

Just to let you know Im really enjoying this lets play. Especially how you don't update the forum every ten turns with boring information about your game but just tells us the best stuff every hundred turns. Also liking the humor

Appreciate it, thanks!

Sadly, this is going to be put on hiatus. I was too ambitious with the settings i think, with map size too large and barbarian civilizations. Its only about 20 seconds between turns now, but I know its just going to get worse and worse.

However, I plan on getting a new computer next month so Ill continue then.
